The Amy Camus story was made up as a joke by a couple of musicians who were on bill with her. It became and urban myth, and was entirely debunked decades ago. The psych record "Miracles" is better than you may expect.

Yes, what a voice. Her Capitol album "Mambo," with arrangements by Billy May, may be the wildest mambo record ever made. "Voice of the Xtabay," with arrangements by The Great Les Baxter, is her greatest. For many years, it held the record for the longest continually in-print album. She signed my copy when I met her in 2005. One of the greatest and most original voices of the 20th Century.

I prefer getting the news online - Pacifica, Salon, Slate, Truthdig, and Propublica, for starters. Still, seeking out the news online is an active experience. Large, bold headlines in papers that everyone sees, whether they want to or not, is a form of passive news transmission. This shared experience is being lost now, for better or for worse.

That's an excellent question. As popular culture has fragmented into increasing numbers of subcultures, people who are into specific genres seem to have less time and patience for the bloviaters of yore. These types of magazines seem to be based on the old model. Also, with message boards and online reviews, people can get an idea real quickly about where they want to explore.

Ahmad Jamal LPs are always beat to hell when I find them in thrift stores.

That's pretty sobering when a city like Los Angeles cuts back on its jazz coverage.
