  1. Seeline, I'm sorry you were booted off AAJ. I used to lurk over there and found your posts to be among the most informative. FWIW, I find the level of discussion year light years beyond what I've read over there, although they do have some good threads for musicians.
  2. Astrud Gilberto - September 17, 1969 - Verve yellow label promo. KILLER versions of "Light My Fire" and "Beginnings."
  3. McCoy Tyner - Extensions - Blue Note (blue & white label)
  4. Luiz Bonfa and Maria Toledo - Braziliana - Philips stereo
  5. I can see how some may not go for Desmond's playing, but I don't understand how you can call it "masturbatory."
  6. Thanks. Did he announce this somewhere? He is a great source of knowledge for European jazz.
  7. WHY WON'T ANYONE EXPLAIN THE BROWNIE REFERENCE?????
  8. Mancini certainly did his share of MOR stuff, but he was also a GREAT film composer, and possibly the only one who led very successful dual careers as a film composer and "easy listening" artist. And, when he decided to do jazz oriented stuff like Peter Gunn, he was on a par with most of his arranging contemporaries. So, pick up BOTH volumes of Peter Gunn on RCA as soon as you can.
  9. I'm just happy to know that Collectibles actually packaged TWO albums I really want together on a SINGLE CD. They usually pair good albums with dogs. Or, two albums that have nothing to do with each other.
  10. Green Onions is on "Uniquely Mancini," if I'm not mistaken. But you REALLY need both volumes of "Peter Gunn," if you don't have them already.
  11. I mentioned both of those in my previous post. Had no idea they were packaged together.
  12. My wife LOVES jazz and is responsible for many LPs and CDs in our house.
  13. I have the first one, and also Manne's take on the film "Gunn Number One," but the second of the three has eluded me. I generally like these albums, though I don't think "The Brothers Go to Mothers" works at all as a ballad. I really love Shelly Manne's "Daktari" album on Atlantic. This is available on CD and LP, and is a great slice of contortionist jazz exotica.
  14. Art Blakey - Dangerous Liaisons OST - Epic mono (Scorpio Reissue)
  15. Just go easy on the alcohol - not more than 50% when mixed with water.
  16. It works great for records that are generally clean to begin with. I use one. For secondhand records that have layers of mystery substances, though, you need something more substantial. You can get the solution easily. Or, just use distilled water.
  17. I would get a collection of his stuff from the early 40s, just when Strayhorn hooked up with him. I have most of this on vinyl, but I think there are some good CD comps out there, referred to as the Blanton/Webster band if I'm not mistaken. From the hi-fi era, get "Masterpieces" and "Ellington Uptown," both of which have longer arrangements of his classic stuff (to take advantage of the LP medium).
  18. I have three albums by Ahmed Abdul-Malik and that RCA one pictured above is my favorite.
  19. Whichever way it goes, it's really fun watching the record labels scramble, isn't it?
  20. The vinyl resurgence is actually helping to kill the CD format. How's that for irony?
  21. This is a real pet peeve of mine.
  22. I think the larger issue here is subjecting the master tapes to unnecessary wear and tear just to capitalize on the obsessive/compulsive nature of a few fringe listeners. They may sound great, but frankly I could care fucking less.
