  1. When you receive it, can you confirm if it has the same distortion?
  2. Thanks for confirming! It is hard to believe this made it past quality control. Do we know if this was ever improved? Is it like this on the Sonny RCA box set?
  3. I have the 1995 CD. I have never owned this on LP. The beginning of track 1 has some weird distortion in one channel, the track with mostly bass and drums, and then I hear what sounds like tape print-through when the ghost of the sax is heard before it properly enters. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, or do I have a defective CD?
  4. Today: Sonny Rollins Alfie Volume 1 (BN) Saxophone Colossus East Broadway Rundown
  5. I had to choose "other," because the classic quartet with McCoy Tyner spans three of the choices.
  6. Excellent! The NOW SOUND!!! This is where you get into the difference between the big band as an ensemble configuration vs. a style. To a lot of people, "big band" simply means 1940s swing music.
  7. Thanks, I will alert the authorities now. 😹 Audrey Hepburn, perhaps?!?
  8. Was not giving it my undivided, but it is much more of an arranged pop album than a jazz album. The best tracks are the 5 by Shorty Rogers. There are three guitarists. There are parts where they are playing melodies in octaves, kind of like a 12-string guitar, but with a fuller sound. And there are a few tracks that feature baritone guitar, an under-used instrument IMO. Knowing at least a little bit about your tastes and interests, probably not for you, but it may be worth checking out the five Shorty tunes if you can find them on Spotify or YouTube.
  9. Not familiar with that one! Yes, that works well. Looking in general for big, brassy stuff with "rock" or funk beat beneath. I'll post my playlist when it is somewhat complete, but I imagine that this will be a work in progress as I encounter tunes.
  10. Stan Getz - Dynasty (Verve, double LP, stereo) Stan with an organ groove trio. Who knew? EDIT: This sounds like a 70s Italian horror soundtrack in places. Which is a supreme compliment coming from TTK!
  11. I like the Ravi Shankar track especially!
  12. Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet - Now, Jazz Ramwong (Pacific Jazz, stereo) This is pretty fantastic, so far!
  13. Correct about the tunes. A&R is Jackie Mills; Hal Blaine is on drums. Chuck Britz, who was the engineer for The Beach Boys, among others, is the organist and engineer here.
  14. Dennis Budimir - The Creeper (Mainstream, stereo) Sandwiched between the pop covers are 4 Shorty Rogers originals.
  15. Spinning now. It is a Now Sound record, so it is good on that level, not so much as a jazz album. Still, a keeper, especially for the cover art!
  16. But it was released under his name. Why a sideman?
  17. Thanks. Are you familiar with this Budimir album on Mainstream, The Creeper?
  18. I'm not finding that title in my searches.
  19. Count Basie - Not Now, I'll Tell You When (Roulette, mono)
  20. Total agreement there!
