  1. On deck to be cleaned is Now, Jazz Ramwong by the Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet, on Pacific Jazz. Anyone know anything about this one?
  2. On deck to be cleaned is a 1965 Dennis Budimir album on Mainstream, titled The Creeper. The cover art is excellent. Anyone know anything about this?
  3. Les McCann - Another Beginning (Atlantic)
  4. What is the status of their catalog in the digital era? I assume that most of the stuff they licensed was reissued on CD at one point or other by the rights holders. What about Jazztone's original albums?
  5. Thanks, that reinforces my divided opinion of the album.
  6. I have the Spooky Tooth album with Pierre Henry. One weekend, I listened to it four times in a row. I couldn't decide if it was brilliant or awful.
  7. The money cut is a Sebesky original, "Yesterday's Dream," which I cannot find by itself on YouTube.
  8. Yeah, I didn't know what to make of this album before I played it. It appeared to be stylistically all over the map, and in certain ways it is, but every track is enjoyable on some level or other. I really loved track three and also the final track, which is more or less a straight-ahead jazz tune. The opening track, with flute, is really nice also.
  9. Just finished the Herbie Applause release. it sounds fine. If you can find it a for low dough, grab it. * * * * * NP: Eddie Bert - Modern Moods (Jazztone Society Classic, mono) You have to crank the bass on this one. Once you do, it sounds great.
  10. In this era of instantly hearing anything you want on Spotify or Youtube, or buying any record you want on Amazon and getting it delivered the next day by Amazon Prime, there is something poignant about being a member of the Jazztone Society and getting albums mailed to you. I remember reading an article about record clubs, back when they existed. A reader who grew up in rural Canada, where they were covered under snow for at least half of the year, wrote that record and book clubs where their lifeline to art, culture, and the outside world.
  11. Herbie Hancock - Inventions and Dimensions (Applause reissue of Blue Note LP, stereo) Despite what has been written about Applause, this copy sounds very clean to my ears.
  12. I love return address labels on used LPs I pick up. I always look for the address on Zillow so I can see where the album used to live.
  13. Listening now. Does not sound bad. There are some percussive effects on track 1 that could initially be mistaken for surface noise, but they are not. I don't have Blue Note vinyl to compare it to. If you can find one for cheap, it may be worth picking up.
  14. Thanks @jazzbo and @Chuck Nessa for those links. I've known about this label for years, but never thought to look into it. I love the cover art on Eddie Bert's Modern Moods. It looks like they used this cover art for a few titles.
  15. Diz - Jambo Caribe (Limelight, mono) This is pretty cool, especially track 3 with the wordless vocals!
  16. Dizzy Gillespie - Cornucopia (Solid State) Diz turns on and tunes in to the moods and vibrations of today! With a little help from Don Sebesky.
  17. I've accumulated a number of LPs on this label, but never knew the back story.
  18. Cannonball - Them Dirty Blues (Riverside, stereo) "Stolen from Bob Williams."
  19. I have a Cannonball LP with a stamp on it reading "Stolen from Bob Williams." Anyone have any LPs with this stamp?
  20. Gerry Mulligan - Paris Concert (Pacific Jazz, mono) Piano-less quartet with Bob Brookmeyer.
  21. Michel Legrand - Le Mans. I'm on a Formula 1/Aurora Model Motoring kick.
  22. I'm sure there are exceptions to what I've encountered - especially if different mastering was used between pressings. But in my experience, a lot of mid- to late-60s US stereo albums on UA, Pacific Jazz, and a few other labels sound harsh to my ears, shrill highs and not much lower end. Their mono counterparts - when I have found them - tend to have a fuller sound with more rounded highs and more bass.
  23. Buddy Rich - Big Swing Face - Pacific Jazz (stereo) I guess so many of these albums are live is because he was always on the road, and they didn't have to book studio time.
  24. Swinging Sights & Sounds - An Advertising Spectacular for Valvoline '69! I need to digitize this for my Formula 1 compilation that I'm curating.
