look at this - how to buy a essential jazz collection
michel1969 replied to jbs-tom's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Maybe some of you will think i'm obsessed, but 23 negs from ONLY 11 buyers seems too thin IMO... WHERE ARE the feedbacks of our (good) friends heavy Japanese bidders ? Let's not forget, that if there is an Ebay scammer like him, its because there are tons of $$$$$$ to earn, especially from Japan. I cannot imagine that one or two of them has not bidded the 1,5 or 2 k on some record listed by nothingforall... -
Caramba has alway been one of my favourites LM sessions. I like the "urgency" feeling of Suicide City, for example. Lee is at his best. Another great moment in Morgan's playing is "Eclipso" on the "Rumproller". In fact, i realize that i tend to listen to Lee's later (post Sidewinder) sessions more often than his first.

K1969 thank you for sharing it with us. I'll second Porcy on everything about this story. He knows very well all record sellers in Italy, except the guy. And I was, with others (though not in Italy) dubious from the very beginning (read our numerous previous posts about it), just because of the listing in himself, and the "strange" contact with the guy. We were right, and its no surprise. I'm sorry for you, with all the hassle regarding ebay, paypal. It will probably take time. Let's hope that our good friends heavy Japanese bidders, who usually NEVER leave negative, in this occasion, will change their habits and give the scammer the treatment he deserves. -

I think the correct title is "A Lucky Songbook in Europe" on MPS. You should eventually find it a decent price/ -

Try to contact various shops in Paris. They might find it for you. But don't forget to show them your credit card BEFORE starting the discussion -

I don't even try to bid on this one. I'm waiting to find a NM copy at 3 € at my local flea market. -

I don't no if it will bring some consolation, but IMO the best of this record is its cover. Its a nice session, but NOT that "New York mood" session we are dreaming about when looking the cover. Anyway... NO, it will not bring consolation. I know how we are , collectors... -
Curtis Fuller : South American Cookin' on Epic (always lost for various reasons including forgot to bid !) Thad Jones : "Detroit NY Junction" (always lost auction - 7 times) Howard Roberts "Good Pickin's" (never found a copy) Wayne Shorter "Second Genesis" (never seen a copy) Hampton Hawes "For Real" Not rare, but always lost the auction (5 times)

I bought this NM one in 1999. It was still affordable for a young history professor.

This afternoon (not too busy) : Burrell, Flanagan, Adams Chambers + Clarke "jazzman Detroit" on Savoy, DG orginal. I don't know if Mr Savoy used to organize rehearsals like Mr Blue and Mr Note, but i can assume that this is one of the best hard bop session of the 50's. its brilliant, moving, funky... later : Curtis Counce "Exploring the Future" Dooto original DG.
-
Tina Brooks "True Blue" Blue Note, or LP, Ear, DG 47w. Definitely dense session !

What records disappointed your expectations?
michel1969 replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
What is the most disppointing to me is reading, mainly in those french Jazz magazines, about many french jazzmen described at "pure genius", "extraordinary talented" "he has to much to say", "50 minutes of pure beauty and gravitation", " radically new sound" "one new idea each 50 seconds" and to hear actually only good but not unfogettable music (whatever kind of). French journalist are always a little excessive in compliments, especially when writing about the newcomers. I think they are afraid to miss the new Barney Wilen or Django Reinhardt. -
It helped to stop my compulsory habit of shopping or bidding online in the middle of the night after too many single malt's glasses. Now i know who actually are those 1 k and more bidders. Anonymous alcoholics.

Good ! A friendly relationship and set sale (even if prices are high) that's what we expect from a site. If you know some, would you share them with us ? HERE is the latest one I received . . . Minimum bid of $20 for a Prestige twofer?! Minimum bid $200 for a Japanese BYG?! Thats often the problem with off ebay auctions and set sales. The stuff is not the most interesting and prices for that are too high. Because, even those dealers put the top records on ebay (at least for now). I think it would be interesting to have a set sale even with high prices, if it is for real top records. Maybe its a dream. Regarding Jeff Barr, i have bought quite a lot from him and always been satisfied. Anyway when Ebay really started in 98-99, i think many dealers like him actually lost customers. Now that many of us are fed up with ebay policy, maybe it would be interesting to go back to the good old seller, but through an online shop.

Of course.... we already have the "hidden" feedback (a scammer's facility), now the concealed ebayer's ID (another scammer's facility). I don't think we are going in the right direction.

Hank and Wynton on "Soul Station", "Roll Call", and "Workout" Hank and Milt Jackson on "Statements", a splendid and totally underrated record Rolf Kuhn and Ronnell Bright on "Streamline" Warne Marsh and Ted Brown on "Jazz of 2 cities" (and Lee Ritenour and Tommy Bolin on Mind Transplant )

For all I know, mint means unplayed. That's not the case for my copy which has been played pretty often to my utter satisfaction. It's in very, very good condition! It looks very laminated to me, also! And it's not a flat edge one. Its very interesting. I've discussed with another collector about laminated cover on 1534. But we where talking about 1534 with mixed w63rd / lex labels. If yours has a lamination and all Lex and no flat it means it is a very early repress (as for example 1541, lex, no flat no kakubuchi, BUT laminated cover. I have never seen that. Must be very rare.
-
Yes, absolutely. I've heard about laminated 1534. Very interesting. Or maybe yours Brownie is very very mint and looks like laminated ? It happens. Is your 1534 Flat edge ?
