  1. 1508 is a very early release. I has normally no laminated cover. I think the first laminated are around 1547/1548/1549. From 1549 to 4156 you have beautiful and very protective lamination, with some overlappings. In fact, the very last laminated cover was 4156, but there are non laminated cover before this number : 4113, 4118 (later release) 4137, 4139, 4146, 4147, 4150, 4151, 4152, 4153, 4154, 4155 are original non laminated cover.

  5. Yes "kakubuchi" is on the front cover I forgot to meantion that 10' too have the kakubuchi. And early Prestige, too. I imagine that the reinforced carboard was made in purpose of protecting the record, but in fact, Kakubuchi cover can easily be seam splitted, because the heavy vinyl "push" on the fragile side (bottom) that has no reinforcement, and to remove the record many times eventually destroy the bottom seam. In other words, technically speaking, Kakubuchi obviously had to be improved...Then came the "non kakubuchi", and later, the laminated covers...
  6. "Kakubuchi" means the cardboard frame that appears on two sides (up and spine) under the paper on early covers like Blue Notes or Atlantic (on Atlantic on the three sides except opening). Like the flat edge "Kakubuchi cover" Blue Notes attracts premium prices, as it is seen as very first press/ cover. Very first 1500 have the kakubuchi orginally, and last kakubuchi is around 1547/1548/1549.
  7. I would like start discussion about Lee Morgan's T. Perchard biography. Just finished it, was very interested in the historical, biographical, recordings information etc : it is an essential research work. But i was somewhat suprised by one of the central statements of his book : basically, Perchard says that Lee was a pure and successfull hard bopper that felt ill at ease in his playing with the post hard bop evolution of jazz (let's say after his success on the Sidewinder, or after 1965)). That's why, regarding Perchard, lee was trying to gain commercial success after Sidewinder, but eventually failed. His statement is based on recordings like Caramba, Charisma, Lighthouse or last session where his playing seems not as advanced as his colleagues (Shorter, Maupin, etc...). I personnally was somewhat surprised to read this, because i have always been a big fan of this records, and found Lee fantastic on this sessions. Anyway, the Author's point of view is interesting. I'd like to start the discussion with that !

  9. For some useless things i can have a good memory... I remember one day i was in a record shop in Paris, and each time the seller and some customers were talking about a Blue Note i was giving them the cat #. For me it was really a joke, but eventually i saw in their eyes that they were thinkig i was some kind of mental case...they looked at me with some curiosity... i must admit that it was very very funny to see their face...

  12. Oh my Was that so long ago... I remember those and thought these came from La Voix de Son Maitre. VSM also released some of them. Had a couple of them but I have not seen those in a long, long time... For sure they are ! try to find a copy of "le message de Hank Mobley" (no need to translate) for example....I've seen only ONE trashed copy, with a well worn cover of this one...The cover was a (rather poor) remake of the original.. a curiosity anyway.

  14. this guy had feedback so people thought he was legit. People pay big money for original pressings in nm condition because they afford the listener a unique experience that cannot be duplicated by later releases or some bs cd remasterings. I have never regretted buying a near mint jazz record... only wish I could buy more. Vintage jazz lps will continue to appreciate, just like great works of art.... cause that's what there are. I'm a jazz vinyl collector and i completely agree with your statement. We all want NM records, we all love them. I sometimes paid big money for NM records, that i still enjoy each time i hold them in my hands, or put it on a turntable, even more when i listen to them. BUT, what i cannot understand is how people can bid so high, without any description, any image, and any contact with a seller. Yes definitely this is Pavlov's dog reaction, and has nothing to do with serious collection. If they are work of art, and yes they are, it is important to keep those wrong sellers and price gougers away from the market, and bid accordingly to the serious and reliability of an auction.
  15. If there was a few to choose, i strongly recommend "Zoot" on Argo/ Cadet, imo one of its best session. Simply beautiful, fantastic change of moods.... then the Riverside. And with Jutta Hipp he did fine work, too. To be added to all the other replies
  16. Really, i can't help thinking that this (probably) scam auction from Italy is the ultimate proof that the jazz record market is now definitely driven by foolishness and absurdity. I've checked all the prices, all the question asked by many potential buyers regarding items. Of course, many final prices were not as high, because there was no picture, and he is not reputable dealer. But it is tragical to see all those Pavlov's dogs and their big money ready to send thousand of $$$ to a seller who has no picture to provide, who stop the auction and reinstate it, describe everyhting as "Mint, period", and above all, state that "he's not familiar with this type of music, but, an obessessed collector has sold him all his NM records" : is there any serious collector ready to sell his collection to someone that is not a reputable and expert record dealer ? There is an enormous amount of lies, paradox etc... but the Pavlov's dog doesn't want to see that : "blue prestige note blue note riverside blue note blue note prestige blue note" "hank mc lean, sonny mobley, lee clark, stanley jones and thad turrentine" "be bop hard bop" that's all. In other words, this is well deserved.

  20. Very interesting ! If he did not want to sell to a local collector like you, its probably because the scan was planned. The guy wants to be FAR from the sellers...Japan or US for exemple, are far from Europe. Maybe that is why he never answered to my scan question.

  22. Of course ! I asked for a scan for an album i plan to bid on. Never answered. I bid a very little amount. Then all auctions cancelled. Then they were back... Never bid again ! It was dubious from the beginning ! Anyway, if one can bid up to 1500 + $ for something that he has not even seen on a scan.... I don't feel like crying for thoses guys

Now that we know the whole electric Miles history, we can consider "Miles in the Sky" closer to " Filles de Way" than to "In a Silent" : "Miles in the Sky" is typically a "transition" album with Miles searching for a new formula (electric guitar sounds on Paraphernalia, for example, that you will found in "Silent" and "Bitches")), while being somewhat still rooted in "second quintet". Anyway, is the "transition" concept of any value, with such a musician like Miles. EVERY record is a moment, a part of the search. Transition is just an historical point of view. Miles in the sky is the "beginning of something"....
  25. That's right. Anyway, besides Orpheum, Quality of jazzland (as for Riverside) is in itself very variable. Some good original pressings like "Blue Jubilee" and some lesser like "All Members" (this being said regardless of the musical quality). The maroon/red second pressing are not very good quality. Its not very interesting to buy them, because the price difference is not very big, most (if not all) Jazzland original are affordable. You can be picky ! Jazzland albums are cool !!! try to find "All Members" (Don Sleet) and Guitar Groove (René Thomas) (i know, i've written it many times....)
