Designers of Jazz Album Covers?
michel1969 replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Yes but many japanese Prestige pressings have slight difference in the lettering and the color, for instance...many BN original have laminated covers (liberty have not), which is an importantt difference, at least in the way of photographying them.... So yes, it makes a difference in the design. Look for the picture of Sonny Rollins Vo 2 : its in fact very different from the original cover, reid Miles did -
Designers of Jazz Album Covers?
michel1969 replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
AFAIK , this is identical to , New York Hot : East Coast Jazz of the 50's and 60's . Daver's The rare and the beautiful , lives up to its name . The problem with those "New York Hot" and "Blue Note Cover art" is that most of the featured covers are NOT original but various reissues, (for example liberty and later pressings of Blue Note, OJC, etc...). Most of them have differences with the original. This is not a very serious job. Japanese books are far better. -

Set your Esnipe on 3800 $ and you'll probably beat Akira (if Seiji, Akiko, Hidetoshi and Yanusari have already this one) -
He also said, "In the long run, we are all dead." MG i always wonder WHERE do all those italian dealers (there are some others) find those stone mint record ? maybe from the kingdom of death... or from the widow. ... tha same i asked myself yesterday - i think the "capri" area was a jazz paradise some early times.... see the film mr. ripley .... lets go to italy - good food anyway (okay france is not bad either ) I think France was no bad some years ago, to find premium quality Blue Note. The most precious of my Blue Notes have been found near (or not too far from) my home, in fact. It is thrill to pick out a Mint Lee Morgan 1541 lex DG and to hear the (incompetent) seller says : "20 € ! " I used to have good relationship with some dealers and collectors, before the Japanese buyers invasion. Now i can hardly enter into their record shops...And i certainly ho longer have access to their finest records.

That's why i'm not a BN completist. Actually, i sold most of my stereos and got rid of most of the VG+ (exept when heavy Lex or 47w). Now I just try to score some favourite albums just like other labels. And it's been two years since i have not bought any heavy BN album, because i'm very picky, and the prices for NM/VG++ have put me out of the market : i simply can't afford it. I eventually got tired of this BN hysteria (i've been into that for too long !) and i think there are many interesting records from other companies (Riverside, Savoy, Prestige, Epic, Argo, to name a few), still affordable, and as hip as Blue Note. I'm tired to read averywhere about the rarity of Blue Note, and to see 4 or 5 copies of "Blowing in From Chicago" or "Star Bright" for sale in one month on Ebay. ... i think just to buy those blue note titles for an investment for the future will make you not that happy, but if you buy the ones which you ALSO like to listen to, then it is pretty good feelin. but of course you are right, there a lots of other great jazz records from other labels, which are sometimes even better than blue note recordings yesterday night dizzy reece blues in trinity vinyl was sold for 765 $ on ebay. it was near mint. no chance - empty trousers still from the soul station deal Moreover, i'd say that paying 1 or 2 k for a NM Blue Note is NOT an investment. It has been said here that the last bidder (the winner) is in fact the only one who whiches to pay this price. In other words, as Mr Keynes stated it, trees will never reach the sky. Something that has gone so high cannot keep on eternally, even with the supply and demand rule. I would be really happy if prices were going down : my own collection would decreasse in value, but i could afford more - that what is the most important. Now thtat you have a 765 $ bid on Dizzy Reece, see how many copies of this record will pop up on Ebay in the next weeks....Meanwhile, i'm still looking for a NM copy of South American Cookin' (Curtis Fuller, Epic) that rarely pops up on Ebay..

Reminds me of the story about the guys hanging out in the prison yard. They'd all been there so long that they didn't even have to tell the jokes anymore, they just numbered them. Spike says, "38." and everyone starts to chuckle. Ace says, "63" and gets a good laugh from the guys. Bruno says, "97" and the place goes nuts. Then Dave says, "14" .... nothing. Spike leans over to Ace, "Some guys just don't know how to tell a joke." Don't worry ! its jst that my computer is right in front of the shelves...Anyway, if i was in jail, i'll try to remember all those jazz catalog number... it would help. Maybe i'll start with the "Liberty" catalog.

43 West 61st St. Blue Note address on back of LP covers.
michel1969 replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
This answer is the typical reaction of some people regarding the "original first press" and other reissues debate. It reminds me a story i had with a record dealer in Paris. The guys sells 99 % of vinyl reissue. But sometimes he has originals. I entered in the shop and start to check: i found a Blue Note and was prepared to take it, when i ask "do you have some other vintage original pressings ? Then the guy got very angry "you... you are a.... collector" (he said that the same way he would have say "Nazi" or Pedophile") You.. you should now, as most of my customers do, that the music is much more important ! " Then i asked why that Blue Note original that i was willing to buy from him was priced at 120 €, and the OJC he had for sale were priced at 12... . I'm still waiting for the answer of this " music only" sincere lover. Well... i understand that the question of an adress on a back cover, a deep groove or a framed cover has nothing to do with music in itself. But it has regarding to the history of jazz labels, jazz industry, and for the curiosity and pleasure of honest men. And thats enough to get interested in that. I know also that those 1,5 K for a record are insane, and that many collectors are not friendly people. But it does not prevent me from collecting, and being interested in that collection. Even if i can't afford those prices. The question of the quality of the artisitc work is the most important, but not the only subjetc of interest. If the content is the most important, then we should scan all the paints of Vinci, Mondrian, Pollock, De Stael, put it on Google images and get rid of the originals...And also, let us forget about how it was painted, etc... we don't care !! Only the final result is important ! And also, lets burn all those useless original manuscrpit of Proust, Joyce or Steinbeck !! They all have been reissued !! Only the final result counts !! Please, sincere music lovers : send me ALL your original pressings, and will gladly send you ALL my reissues. For you, it doesn't matter which adress is on back cover... PM ASAP for appointment. -
Take good care of it. Where did you buy it ? I bought mine at Paris Jazz Corner in 1999...

1970s BN Rainbow cover LPs vs. Japanese King LPs
michel1969 replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
From someone that was NOT THERE, yes the two previous threads are very interesting. And the argument are quite valuable. I've frequently noticed that you often meet "somebody" that was THERE (means = before you) when you are interested in Jazz. And that "somebody" often has a different point of view. In fact, the photos of Rainbow are very good. Its the general design that has become out of date... Till the time when it will be considered as soooo cooool, by another generation. -
1970s BN Rainbow cover LPs vs. Japanese King LPs
michel1969 replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
That 83023 is killing me ! I had the occasion of buying it in Paris at bargain.. i did not. The King cover are not all in the Ried Miles vein, but at least they will not become old fashioned. -
1970s BN Rainbow cover LPs vs. Japanese King LPs
michel1969 replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Don't know for the sound, but IMO those "rainbow cover" are among the ugliest covers ever. I suppose they were made in order to PREVENT the record from selling. -
I mean that i doubt that the cover of this one is a REAL "lex" era record. This one was reissued on United Artist with a clone cover. You can find it, but frequently those UA are "cut corner". I have never seen a Blue Note Lex with a cut corner. So I may be wrong but.... -_-
