  1. The underrated Michael Giles was the drummer on that album. Guy
  2. Well, then, it sounds like there will be some jazz out there. Guy
  3. Are they really that bad compared to say, NYC? Guy Well, there are trees and stuff to help keep it cool in NC. But we get long stretches where the heat index exceeds 105 F, and we still have summer (less brutal but still summer) in October. Brace yourself. Uggh. I take it the humidity is pretty nasty? I guess the tradeoff is "cold winter" vs "nasty summer". Fortunately, unlike Connecticut, I imagine every place is air-conditioned. Guy
  4. I've been meaning to pick up Summit Conference for a while... is Cerebral Caverns equally good? Guy
  5. Actually, I'm selling out to corporate America. Enough of the academic life for me! Guy
  6. Are they really that bad compared to say, NYC? Guy
  7. Very nice album. I think I like it better than The Bridge -- Hawk plays great, Sonny has a nice a-g edge to his playing, and Paul Bley adds that special something. Guy
  8. I don't know where I'll be living -- probably somewhere near downtown. I'll PM you once I get closer to figuring that out. Guy
  9. I am moving to Charlotte, NC during the summer to start a new job, once I finish my PhD dissertation. Is there anything I should know about the city? I am guessing that there isn't much of a jazz scene. Guy
  10. Let's not forget that Monk's work as a sideman for Keepnews was his career breakthrough. Guy
  11. Shouldn't the musicians matter more than Keepnews? Though he may have been important as a facilitator for the careers of Monk, Bill Evans, Cannonball, and Wes Montgomery, I've never been particularly impressed with his "insights" as a liner note writer. Guy
  12. I assume this is the clash between neoclassicism (mid 20th century) and romanticism (19th century). Guy
  13. Chuck forgot to mention it but they are both sidemen on the Roscoe Mitchell disc. Guy
  14. I'm only interested in a few of these, but someone posted this on JazzCorner and I thought I'd share the information. Chuck, what do you know about the upcoming Roscoe M?
  15. Bibby to the Cavs could be an upgrade. J Kidd is still a formidable player but I'm not sure how many years he has left in the tank. Guy
  16. Looks like I will be in the Bay Area for Passover when you guys play Berkeley and SF. Assuming that the Seder isn't that night, I will try to get up to one of the shows. Guy
  17. Anybody else read these books? Both are written about foreign aid and its potential gains, or lack thereof, by two economists. The End of Poverty, by Jeff Sachs is very optimistic about the potential for foreign aid; The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good is more skeptical, at least on a macro level. I find Easterly's style to be somewhat more engaging and probably more education about development issues in general. Both are worth reading if you have a lot of spare time and are interested in the issue, though if you want to save some time just read a summary online. Both are readable by the layman. Sach's book is a bit egocentric (all the places I've been blah blah blah). Guy
  18. Deciding between a job offer that exists and one that does not yet exist. I will probably be moving to Charlotte NC this summer. Finishing up a PhD dissertation. Guy
  19. Congrats!
  20. New Haven also has a Firehouse 19, oddly enough. I think the two establishments are unrelated. Guy
  21. I actually thought the slam dunk contest was lame this year. Sticker on the backboard, whoop dee doo. Guy
  22. Apparently Barkley and Bavetta's race is on.
  23. More thoughts on this? I wonder if the influence was more indirect than direct ("defining" is a bit strong). Mitch Mitchell was more influenced by Elvin than Buddy Miles. Guy
  24. Was this a problem on the LP? Guy
  25. My computer (a Toshiba Satellite laptop) is about 2.5 years old and recently has been developing some problems -- crashing from overheating, erratic CD/DVD drive, and hinges connecting the screen to the body coming loose. Fortunately I have a 3 year warranty on the thing, and early last week sent it in for repairs. They sent it back pretty quick, fixed the hinges, replaced the CD/DVD drive, and replaced the cooling fans. I was very excited to have it back... ...Except now the computer will crash after 1 or 2 minutes of being on. I spoke with the technical support guy and it's definitely a hardware issue. So I have to send it for repairs again on Monday. Not having the laptop doesn't make my work impossible (fortunately I am at a stage when I am mostly reading, not writing) but it does make life a hassle. I unrealistically demanded that they send me a replacement computer while this second set of repairs takes place. How many sets of repairs do I have to undergo before I have a legitimate right to demand a new comptuer?
