  1. He definitely manages not to be an asshole, but he comes off as somewhat ridiculous when comparing Messiaen and Cecil Taylor (and getting totally called on it by Iverson). Guy
  2. According to someone at AAJ, the sextet gig has been cancelled due to health reasons. Guy
  3. Somebody posted this on AAJ -- supposedly it comes from the Bad Plus's blog, Do the Math. Guy EDIT (by Jim Alfredson): In honor of Ethan regarding his posting here on his blog, I've deleted the quoted article instead urge people to use the link to read the article on the original blog, in it's original format. http://thebadplus.typepad.com/dothemath/20...view_with_.html Thank you, ----Jim
  4. Very nice, Paul. I'm sure you're psyched to have the job search behind you, with a happy ending to boot! Guy
  5. I must admit, since Jack's dad killed his brother the show picked up. I was on the edge of my seat as the end of tonight's episode approached. Guy
  6. Does PBR actually have any alcohol in it? I was short on cash one night at a bar and was wondering whether it was a good value. Guy
  7. Happy birthday, Jon! Guy
  8. I'm trying to pay more attention to Monk's playing these days, and was wondering what your favorite Monk playing/improvisations are? Individual tracks, not albums. (We all know his compositions are great.) For starters, how about the version of "The Man I Love" from Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants where Monk starts out his solo by playing the melody at half-time (relative to the rhythm section), stops in the middle, and then after a nudge from Miles, he finishes with an incredibly inspired run of ideas. I'm looking forward to listening to your recommendations. Guy ps Bonus: If there are any tracks that you feel feature unusually inspired comping by Monk, include them as well!
  9. It's a quartet album w/Sam Rivers, previously released under the name Involution. Guy
  10. And what about this one? Todd Rundgren doing "Four in One" w/drum machines? Peter Frampton?
  11. Are these available on CD? What do they sound like? I bet the results could get crazy.
  12. FWIW, some economists hypothesize that it was the arrival of air-conditioning that really allowed the south to take off economically. Not sure how credible that is. Guy
  13. Hasn't this already happened (w/Steve Hackett replacing the Frippster)? Guy ps There is a prog rock band named Fruupp, I think.
  14. The underrated Michael Giles was the drummer on that album. Guy
  15. Well, then, it sounds like there will be some jazz out there. Guy
  16. Are they really that bad compared to say, NYC? Guy Well, there are trees and stuff to help keep it cool in NC. But we get long stretches where the heat index exceeds 105 F, and we still have summer (less brutal but still summer) in October. Brace yourself. Uggh. I take it the humidity is pretty nasty? I guess the tradeoff is "cold winter" vs "nasty summer". Fortunately, unlike Connecticut, I imagine every place is air-conditioned. Guy
  17. I've been meaning to pick up Summit Conference for a while... is Cerebral Caverns equally good? Guy
  18. Actually, I'm selling out to corporate America. Enough of the academic life for me! Guy
  19. Are they really that bad compared to say, NYC? Guy
  20. Very nice album. I think I like it better than The Bridge -- Hawk plays great, Sonny has a nice a-g edge to his playing, and Paul Bley adds that special something. Guy
  21. I don't know where I'll be living -- probably somewhere near downtown. I'll PM you once I get closer to figuring that out. Guy
  22. I am moving to Charlotte, NC during the summer to start a new job, once I finish my PhD dissertation. Is there anything I should know about the city? I am guessing that there isn't much of a jazz scene. Guy
  23. Let's not forget that Monk's work as a sideman for Keepnews was his career breakthrough. Guy
  24. Shouldn't the musicians matter more than Keepnews? Though he may have been important as a facilitator for the careers of Monk, Bill Evans, Cannonball, and Wes Montgomery, I've never been particularly impressed with his "insights" as a liner note writer. Guy
  25. I assume this is the clash between neoclassicism (mid 20th century) and romanticism (19th century). Guy
