  1. I avoided Which Way Is East for the same reasons and haven't picked it up. "Play every instrument" sessions make me wary of new-age noodlefests. Guy
  2. Anybody else going to this gig? I'll be there tomorrow (Thursday). Guy
  3. What about Mingus at Monterey? Guy
  4. There's some incredible Hodges on the Ellington disc ...And His Mother Called Him Bill. Guy
  5. I'd say it's on the same level as the best of his BN days. This is a really good album. Guy
  6. I'm not a subscriber but the first paragraph didn't seem too promising. Guy
  7. Any thoughts about the recent album? I've been somewhat hesitant to pick it up because of the instrumentation. Not sure I want to hear Lloyd's piano playing. Guy
  8. It's good but not great, IMHO. On the plus side there's a track where Lloyd takes a long inside-outside solo -- some of the best 60s playing I've heard from him. Guy
  9. This is a very nice album! I like the tunes featuring the Very Very Circus best. I will have to check out more HT. Guy
  10. The Soft Bulletin is GREAT, I need to load it up to the ipod. I never bought, but have heard, the follow up. (Yoshimi Battles the Giant Pink Robots or something like that.) It sounded like more of the same and I didn't bother picking it up. Guy
  11. I've started watching Star Trek: the Next Generation on DVD. I was briefly into the show in high school, at least enough to watch a season or so. It's not great so far but not bad either. I was shocked to discover that Data got laid in the 2nd episode!!! Guy
  12. I'm listening to Cornbread right now -- I think this is a better album. Guy
  13. The '89 quake is a really vivid memory for me. I also remember a '99 quake that was way out in the SE California desert but shook my place in San Diego quite a bit -- it was late at night. My parents live pretty close to the Hayward Fault, which is also expected to have a "big one" in the near geological future. Guy
  14. The lineup isn't as appealing to me as last year's. I don't think I'll be going this time. Guy
  15. John Kelman over at AAJ is maintaining a future releases page. It's a little hard to navigate. I miss jazzmatazz. Guy
  16. I've had this album for several years and its appeal (particularly that of the title track) is mostly lost on me. I have nothing against this type of music -- I love "Sombrero Sam", "The Turnaround", "Adam's Apple", "Right Now", "Una Mas", "Common Mama", etc. But "The Sidewinder" has a lackluster theme, a mediocre groove, and unremarkable playing from the musicians involved. At best it could probably be interchanged with other BN albums of that era. I've been so disappointed by the title track that I probably haven't paid enough attention to the rest of the album. "Totem Pole" is much better than the title track. Guy
  17. I'm a little dubious about the actions/statement attributed to Tony. At the very least, I'm guessing that it is being either taken out of context, embellished after the fact, and/or exaggerated in importance. The Plugged Nickel music wasn't a radical break with Miles's earlier music -- it was a very natural progression from what the Quintet was playing in 1964. Guy
  18. 30s Ellington Charles Lloyd Discovery
  19. One of the best he's written and I'm a regular Sportsguy reader. He really nails the entire problem with the NBA right now. The sad thing is, I don't think they care. This cracked me up:
  20. Elaborate -- I've never even heard of this guy. Guy
  21. congrats, Paul. Guy
