  1. Under whose name was his stuff w/Charles Lloyd issued? Is that in the 7 cd box? Guy
  2. Hey, there's already an AOTW for this week. (Alon Marcus chose Art of Rhythm.) You should PM JohnS to sign up for a future slot. Guy
  3. Horror of horrors. Those typically uncouth Americans. Personally, I'm not so into watermelon. Nectarines or pineapples and you might get me to compete. Guy
  4. Your name is "chewy", after all. Guy
  5. Crazy... has anybody come that close to Kobayashi before? Guy
  6. SS1, how much did the second-place finisher get? Kobayashi's dominance of the field is pretty incredible. Guy
  7. McLaughlin and Williams are so ON during McLaughlin's solo that it's ridiculous. No wonder Larry Coryell thought John was the best guitarist he'd heard in his life. Larry Young's solo sounds pretty wild too but he's buried in the mix. The recording quality is nowhere near "unlistenable" but it's really tragic that you can't hear Larry's (presumably) magnificent playing. Guy
  8. I'm probably not going to get around to listening until later in the week. But one thing I remember is that Dewey Redman is terrific on this album, particularly on #3. I wish he appeared on more tracks. "Petals Danse" is a beautiful tune as well. Guy
  9. Henry Threadgill, Everybody's Mouth a Book (Pi) Max Roach, Percussion Bitter Sweet (Impulse!)

  11. It was a disastrous system when my dad and I went to see Oscar Peterson. I'd been to Yoshi's a few times before but never on a packed night. We barely found seats! Guy
  12. I don't see a google checkout icon... where should it be? Guy It should be just below the button that says "Complete Your Order" Alright, I succeeded once I entered my CC info into google checkout. It looks like you need to do that first before you go to cd universe. Guy
  13. I don't see a google checkout icon... where should it be? Guy
  14. I don't see the google checkout option at CDU. Guy
  15. I think he plays, or has played, with Henry Threadgill. Guy
  16. I don't understand why Couw feels the need to defend this guy. He cheated another board member. To me, that calls for virtual banishment in itself, not to mention all the other offensive tactics. I'd be livid if I got cheated by a board member; and would remind others of this fact. Trust is everything on this board, and I buy and sell a lot of stuff here. Well, to be honest, it gets a little annoying. Guy
  17. It was good. It turned out to be 3 guitars/2 basses rather than 4 guitars/1 bass. (Jerome Harris played acoustic bass guitar.) The two saxophonists were excellent. I was less crazy about the guitars -- there was a lot of "passing the baton". The material included a lot of Motian originals ("Mumbo Jumbo", "Desert Dream"), Monk, some bebop, and a standard or two. I like the trio with Motian and Frisell better, though. More interplay. Guy ps I forgot to add that someone was recording the first set. It didn't look sophisticated enough to be ECM or another record label, but it was a real microphone setup. I imagine it will be released eventually?
  18. I started watching this on DVD -- it's really good! I'm 5 episodes into it. The only thing it's missing are some battles, but I guess they were on a tight budget. Guy
  19. I avoided Which Way Is East for the same reasons and haven't picked it up. "Play every instrument" sessions make me wary of new-age noodlefests. Guy
  20. Anybody else going to this gig? I'll be there tomorrow (Thursday). Guy
