  1. Seeing the preview twice was enough. Inspirational overcoming the odds a friendship that knows no bounds...yawn.
  2. You should sell that as a catchphrase to the makers of all things blu-ray .
  3. What a shame you don't remember 2000. An Oh-fer 4! It's mostly the Celtics "fault" that Boston has a long playoff presence for the past 40 odd years yet they've been in hibernation several years until recently. I'd almost not count making the opening round in the NBA or NHL as they let so many teams into the playoffs, but I wouldn't want to cause any grief for any of Memphis "o" members.
  4. It helped that it was essentially a Toyota with a Pontiac nameplate on it. My grandfather was a GM dealer in a town of 2000 until the early '70s. Obviously GM has been in trouble for some time now, but it's still kind of jarring. It didn't help that in the '70s they'd release the same lemon under 3 different nameplates, such as the Buick Skylark, Olds Starfire, and the Chevy Monza 2+2, thus poisoning all the lines. Our family gave up any loyalty and started buying Hondas, which my grandfather ended up grudgingly admiring for the quality.
  5. Best he ever did was 2nd in '73 to Jim Palmer. Finished 3rd in '74 & '77 too. He was wild back then though with 2 of those years walking 200+ (though on close or more than 300 innings. And people get all a fluttery about Sabathia's pitch counts... ) The 2 season he had the best shot at winning the award he had some rotten luck. He was spectacular in 1981 pitching in the cavernous Astrodome with a league leading ERA of 1.69 and a winning % of .688. I say winning % as he went just 11-5 due to the strike. And this was also the year of Fernandomania. I would have given it to him in 1987. ERA title of 2.76 and the strikeout leader too with 270 in 211 2/3. But the Astros just didn't score for him and he went 8-16 and finished 5th in the voting because of it. In 10 of his starts the Astros scored zero or one run. In 5 they scored 2. That's how you lose 16 games being the ERA leader! Steve Bedrosian won, which is usually the way relievers win the award when no starter stands out, or the best starter doesn't get enough Ws.
  6. I tend to view iPod listening as something different. I mean I used to listen to music through a little transistor radio, then later cassette on a boom(less) box and enjoyed it. Music at 128 on an iPod sounds better than both. If the convenience of listening to music on the iPod leads you to be knocked out by hearing something again, you can always break out the CD/LP and play it again on the stereo to enjoy it in its full glory. Assuming you can hear the difference.
  7. Happy Birthday Erick!
  8. Whew, still can't get over the Yankees. Looks like Chuck got a great game at Wrigley. Cubs win in 11 over the Cards. Classic rivalry, great game and 69 degree weather. Way to go Chuck!
  9. Happy Birthday to the King!
  10. Woo hoo! That's great! That sounds about right. I never did sit in box seats at old Busch Stadium. But the inflation calculator suggests that that $12-$14 in '77 is equal to about $42-$49 today, so I can see why. Especially being a teenager and no way to shop the 'net for deals, since uh...nevermind. His 23 HRs in '74 doesn't seem like much but at that time and in that ballpark it felt like 30. The guy had a presence about him and looked so good in the Cardinal uniform. Oh well, instead the Dodger fans can credit him with being a huge part of 3 pennants & 1 World Series title. (Grumble grumble grumble...) Baseball on FOX on April 18th! What on earth is happening, is MLB actually trying to promote the game to people without cable? Astonishing!
  11. I doubt you would need a special rider. Best thing to do is ask your agent though. Got a digital camera? Go to it! (Video might be easier.) You can use a Google email account as an(other) offsite storage site for photographic evidence of your collection (and other things you're insuring.) You can also set up a folder of all of the email receipts you have from ordering discs online if you want more proof of what you've spent. All of this is time consuming but in my experience it's best to be well armed with evidence just in case the insurance decides that day that you're an easy mark for enhancing their profits.
  12. I didn't see a game in person until my late teens. My dad wasn't born in the US and never caught onto American sports and my mom loathed baseball. My avatar is the front of the scoresheet for her game. Pirate lineup. Cards lineup. Yummy back. No Ralph Kiner for the Bucs as he & Joe Garagiola had been trade to the Cubs a couple of weeks earlier. Baseball-reference is just crazy loaded with stuff now btw. Here's my first game. I vividly remember Vukovich striking out Davey Lopes on 3 pitches. The first pitch practically echoed in the park when it hit Simmons glove. On the way down was Bobby Bonds who was on his second to the last stop in the majors and what a sad sight it was. On the way up was Pedro Guerrero who would hit .322 as a part-timer that year. I think one would be hard pressed to go to a game where 5 pitchers make an appearance and all had reasonably good (or better) careers. Vuke later won a Cy Young (having one of the worst seasons by a winner) and pitched in a World Series. Donnie Moore almost pitched in one, poor guy. Ruess moved out of the pen and tossed a no-hitter later that year and Hooten also had a solid career. And of course Kaat is one of those lengthy career borderline hall of fame guys. In every game since whenever I go back and look at the boxscore there's always some cup-of-coffee reliever who made an appearance. The other small thrill was seeing Bernie Carbo who I liked from his days with Reds and the first time around with the Cards. I was even happy for him when he got those HRs in the '75 series even though I was rooting for the Reds. Bigger thrill was seeing Reggie Smith. Why the Cards traded him away...
  13. Cleveland > Detroit Atlanta > Miami Boston > Chicago Orlando > Philly Cleveland > Atlanta Orlando > Boston Cleveland > Orlando ---------------------------- Lakers > Utah Portland > Houston Denver > New Orleans Dallas > San Antonio Portland > Lakers Denver > Dallas Portland > Denver ------------------------------- Cleveland > Portland Go Blazers!
  14. Me too. But I think NBC tried it once (not an option, they just bagged the announcers) as an experiment, around 1980 iirc. The broadcast wasn't considered a success, so I doubt it'll be done again. I remember that game. They have a bit of problem in that they put more mics down on the field to give you the feel of the game, yet that means hearing what the players are saying. I recall at least one loud F bomb being broadcast.
  15. I was hoping they'd use this as a chance to toss Al Michaels and start anew. The tone of his voice is so grating.
  16. I've had all sorts of things happen when ordering from them. Sometimes discs arrive in just a couple of days, other times an order takes 21 "business days" (on the nose). I've had a disc get lost in the mail and even had a wrong DP sent (it was early on and I didn't have it so I kept it). I've had a disc arrive and then next day receive an email saying it's been shipped. But in the end through email or phone any problem has been taken care of so I keep on ordering from them.
  17. Whoa ho, Ichiro hits a grand slam for a 7 run 7th! Can you believe this? This is fun. I'd forgotten what this was like! Springtime...I love it I love it I love it!
  18. Whoa, I didn't even realize Schiltz was still around. They had some horrendously ugly posters in 1982 when they sponsored The Who's farewell tour. Sure looks like they're going for McLaughlin as the clothes aren't right for the other famous double neck players. The shirt looks too tasteful for it to be Steve Howe or Rick Nielsen. If it were Page the shirt would be unbuttoned down to the navel at least. They may avoid direct comparisons to McLaughlin because of the necklace (or perhaps that will get them in trouble) along with the guitar lacking some of the detail work that McLaughlin's had (at least in the photos I've seen.) Still, like you say, I never associated Mahavishnu being used to sell beer, especially such a...non-premium one.
  19. Sorry about losing your man. He had such a classic voice. I mainly know him from his narration on NFL Films. edited - Argh, Fidrych too?
  20. I've read interviews where they say they don't have 5-8-77 in the vault. It's a Betty Board, and since it was part of the expired rental storage locker purchase by a fan it would make sense that it might not be. Of the Betty Board collection the Port Chester '71 show was officially released but that's because there were multi-tracks as well. Veneta '72 which had a song end up on So Many Roads had multiple sources so the Dead were able to use the non-Betty. Not sure if the 1980 Warfield bits in the above link ended up on Reckoning but again, if those dates did they still had the muti-tracks. I don't have the interview handy and perhaps things have changed since that time. Dick was also quoted as saying there was no need to sell Cornell since everybody has it already. He wasn't much of a fan of the show compared to others from '77. His ghost is no longer calling shots though.
  21. It might take some time as they haven't been marketed well. I usually know about stuff like this but hadn't heard until Kenny posted. I'm not that anxious to buy one due to other interests right now, along with what you note in the 2nd sentence above. The few boots I've heard were alright but...well, the music on them didn't live up to the great band name.
  22. What an awful unexpected thing to go through, you have my condolences. I wish you well during this time of grief.
  23. That's something else that it was Cameron. In 2005 he was in that awful OF collision with Beltran. He suffered a concussion and multiple fractures of the cheekbones & nose. One of these days a pitcher isn't going to be as "lucky" as Martinez was.
  24. The mono box only goes through the White Album since everything after that was a fold down. *Edited to add that the appropriate mono Past Masters is also included.
  25. Mono & stereo on separate discs. The monos will be only sold in as a box set. One lucky buyer gets Heather Mills' extra leg that Paul took in the divorce. Rudy's doing the stereo mixes since the huge market of jazz fans love his separation.
