  1. I have the Mercury box...and I also have the Verve reissue because the sound is AMAZING. I'm with Lon on this one, I like that Verve series, it was intended to appeal to fans of the original LP's and in that respect they did the job admirably.
  2. "Much Ado About Nothing"
  3. Let's not forget that Pearson was A&R guy and "house arranger" at Blue Note from 1963 onwards. Alot of sessions bear his stamp (even if he's not credited on the cover)...in fact we might have him to thank for some of the "Blue Note-isms" of the 60's that we enjoy. Okay, back to Wahoo. Man, just check out the in-fuckin-credible arrangements on this sucker. Pearson had the wonderful ability of making a sextet sound like a nonet...or a nonet sound like an entire orchestra...his albums always sound LARGE. But I think the word that best describes Duke is "taste" (or tasty if you prefer). Pick the best musicians the label had to offer, throw in superb originals like "Amanda", "Bedouin" (brilliant), ESP and the title track (...and boy does Duke DRIVE that rhythm section!) and then give your players the space they require to deliver the goods. Take Joe Henderson's solos for example, he's REAL inspired on this date, cranking it that extra notch. You can tell that Duke's really leading this group, not just in the arrangements, but his playing. That's another thing...Duke may not be a "master" piano player, but he's a seriously SOULFUL player who took the Wynton Kelly-ish thing and expanded on it. Anyway, definitely worth an import price...and hopefully an RVG or something one day. This album deserves to be in print...and Pearson's writing needs to garner the respect it should.
  4. That's Sweet Honey Bee... There is some noticeable tape wear on the CD of Wahoo (particularly on Amanda). Personally, I would also put this up there as one of the greatest Blue Note sessions...PERIOD. Whole album is beautiful, love the track ESP.

    Prestige RVGs

By the way gang...I KNOW that these are RVG's. I'm not that clueless. The Kirk Felton thing was an aside.

    Prestige RVGs

Sign me up for the Earland and Hawkins as well.... Is Kirk Felton still doing mastering for them now? He's my favorite of the group that did the OJC's.
  7. I haven't unpacked my CD's yet, so I don't feel like digging through boxes to find it.... But AMG says: Review by Scott Yanow Discovered in Columbia's vaults 19 years after it was performed, this recording features a septet from Duke Ellington's orchestra keeping busy in the studios mostly playing standards and blues. With altoist Johnny Hodges, baritonist Harry Carney, trombonist Lawrence Brown and cornetist Ray Nance all having ample solo space, these renditions are quite enjoyable, swing hard and sound fresh. Ellington fans should pick this one up. Now, my opinion is that any album that gives Hodges, Nance, Brown & Carney ample solo space...is worth getting. I LOVE the small group sessions that Duke recorded throughout the 50's/60's. The Violin Session is another favorite.
  8. There's probably 1000 more discs out there with them together. You HAVE to get this one....all-time classic: Hodges, Ellington...and Bean = KILLER
  9. MTV by Deep Purple from the album Rapture Of The Deep lyrics by Ian Gillan I was driving through the night Into an endless tunnel of fog When it dawned on me something was wrong I was in a trance, hypnotised Bored beyond belief I was listening to the same old song I know every lick, every word Every nuance I'm on first name terms with the crew But I'd better get used to this poop du jour Sure as hell they won't play anything new Oh yes I love you really Classic Rock Radio Oh my dear it's time for bed Time for you to go Everyone is asleep The pirates took to the water stole the charts But sadly that didn't go down well with those upstairs Who require loyalty The establishment considered That the uncontrolled appreciation of music Was a danger to royalty The mighty empire roared As Cash 'n' Everitt on the high seas Looked like they'd get blown out of the water They did of course eventually come ashore As meek as mice or to be more accurate As lambs to the slaughter Oh yes I love you really I stand to attention Oh Fanny, I love you dearly Something else I should mention? You sweet thing Let's not talk about MTV I don't even want to start I want to take a look at Classic Rock Radio We're talking about the state of the art Mr. Grover 'n' Mr Gillian You musta made a million The night that Frank Zappa caught on fire Could you tell us all about it Keep it short and use my version Or everyone out there'll think I'm a liar We can speak about bananas for one second Just because I understand You have to get them off your chest But in the meantime while your talking Could you do some more of these here ID's And then this station might maintain some interest Oh yes I love you dearly But why do you exist? Oh yes I love you really Is there something that I missed?
  10. I saw Foul Play in the theater when it came out...I was about 8...I remember the albino bad guy scared the living CRAP out of me. Had nightmares for weeks....
  11. Egad! And consecutive numbers, too! And I never noticed. Looking closely now, I think between 4238 and 4239 she'd had a hairdo and shortened the dress (also removed her trousers). MG You are truly a Master Jazz Geek and I tip my hat to you sir!
  12. as for the album....easily one of my favorite Blue Note's...there's such an incredible vibe. I also tend to listen to Slow Drag, Blackjack & The Creeper right afterwards.
  13. Remember, that same model was used on another album...even wearing the same outfit...
  14. God, I hope so. Agreed!
  15. I'll take all the one chord vamps I can get if Grant Green is soloing over them!!!! Bring this puppy on!
  16. I tried to order that the other day from CDUniverse - they told me this morning it was on back order and might never come in, so I changed it to the Garland/Davis Moodsville vol 1. MG That Garland/Lockjaw album is one of my all-time faves. There's another unreleased song from the session called "Untitled Blues" that was released on this compilation....
  17. "I've been down so GOD DAMN LONG...that it looks like up to me...(insert guitar riff here)"
  18. Now....they could re-issue the UA album Going To The Movies by Jerome Richardson and I'd be ALL FOR THAT!
  19. Oh yeah...one more time just to make me feel better....FUCK AOL!

  21. House music is the shit ya listen to before you get evicted for not paying the rent....which then becomes car music once you're sleeping in the back of your 1977 Ford Pinto station wagon.

    Johnny Coles

Coles is easily one of my favorites, not a "flash" player...but what a tone and there's always "feel" to his playing. Hard to describe, but easy to like. I agree with Chuck that I've always considered "Little Johnny C" to be a Duke Pearson date, but Duke created a wonderful vehicle to display Coles' talents. The song "So Sweet My Little Girl" is beautifully haunting and would go on my "desert island" compilation. Another of my favorites:
