From Yahoo News: Director Val Guest Dies at Age 94 Mon May 22, 5:51 AM ET PALM DESERT, Calif. - Val Guest, the versatile British director and screenwriter best known for directing science-fiction classics "The Quatermass Xperiment" and "The Day the Earth Caught Fire," has died. He was 94. Guest died of prostate cancer on May 10 in a Palm Desert hospice, said his wife, actress Yolande Donlan. He "brought a lot of intelligence to a genre that is often sorely in need of it," said director Joe Dante, a longtime fan of his films. "Every single one of his pictures is thoughtful and well-done." After becoming a director in the 1940s, Guest made comedies, thrillers and musicals, but he was best known for his science-fiction works. "The Quatermass Xperiment" was a 1955 science-fiction horror thriller with a semi-documentary feel about an experimental rocket ship that crashes in rural England with only one surviving crew member. An invisible force gradually transforms him into a monstrous creature as he consumes plants, animals and humans. In the 1961 film "The Day the Earth Caught Fire," simultaneous nuclear explosions by the United States and the Soviet Union knock Earth off its axis and send it hurtling toward the sun. The picture earned Guest and co-writer Wolf Mankowitz best British screenplay awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Guest also was one of the five credited directors on the 1967 James Bond spoof "Casino Royale." "He was a jack-of-all-trades," Dante said. "But there are a lot of little gems in his output that, hopefully, will come to light now." Article

More big hurricanes for the Gulf this summer?

Hmmm....sounds like a possible future road trip for my Yamaha! Motorcycle right? I can't see you riding a keyboard to Mississippi. -
How shocking that Jim would pick a Burrell album for an example.

Now...I have seen it all.

Dan Brown's publishing miracle, "The Da Vinci Code"

No no no no no. Each page of a screenplay equates to roughly one minute of screen time (but even this isn't exact). That's right, my bad...not enough coffee today.... -
No shit! Him and Robin Williams have both squandered all their considerable talents by converting into "family friendly film stars". To see brilliant comedians like this star in crap like RV is just too damn depressing! Remember Robin Williams back when he used to be on HBO's Young Comedians series? "HARK! THE MOON, LIKE A TESTICLE, HANGS LOW IN THE SKY!" Now if I could just find a copy of Robin's "Birth, Life & Death of a Sperm" skit....that was AWESOME!

The pacing is understandable in a film that has to explain so much to the audience, each page of a novel equates to about 1 minute of screentime. So every film would last for hours and hours and hours if they didn't condense. -

Awesome! Didn't know you lived in Louisiana. How far are you from the Biloxi area? I'm really excited...can't wait to visit New Orleans again, I haven't been there since 1984. -
The way I view the Verve Vault program is....at least these titles are AVAILABLE! No outrageous import prices, no $18.99 US retail prices, no getting gouged on Ebay to try and get used copies. Let's face it, the reason the Verve Vault exists is because they can't justify the profit margin to physically manufacture these discs and sell them in the store. Many record companies are just not bothering to release jazz reissues because of how small the market is. However, by selling them online it allows us the ability to acquire these titles...and it significantly increases their profit margin per reissue. Makes good business sense. Plus the iTunes store is used by so many people...it's also like having free advertising. So, keep 'em coming, I'd rather have them this way than not at all. Re: Covers. When you purchase one of these, this is how to get a great quality cover. 1. Play any of the songs so the little album cover shows up in the left hand bottom corner. 2. Click on the image and it blows up to full size (almost fills monitor). Select ALT+Print Screen, paste into a photo editor and trim off the edges.

There's always Goodwill...I've found some killer stuff for 25 cents on numerous occasions. -
Whoopee!!!! Shepp's For Losers is AWESOME! Thanks again to Mr. Sangrey for hipping me to that particular gem. Never heard that Pharoah...but I'll buy it anyway. It's also nice to see the Milt Jackson on the list and a sonic upgrade to Wrapped Tight will be most welcome. I wonder if it's a bad omen that the release date is 6/6/06?

Do you treat Mosaics differently than other CDs?
Shawn replied to LJazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No wife...no worries here. -
I saw Javon once in Seattle...his backing band was Dr. Lonnie Smith & Idris Muhammed (and a guitarist I never did identify). Let's just say that Javon did his best to keep up with Lonnie & Idris...but they easily "schooled" the young guy. In fact, Lonnie purposely went TOTALLY outside on one of Javon's ballads...it was awesome...but Javon looked like he wanted to walk over and strangle him.

Haven't read the book or any of the related subject matter (I've got organized religion phobia), but I will go see the film. The hype machine around this is interesting, quite a word of mouth deal. One of the entertainment magazines said this film could have probably saved all it's advertising budget because it would have been a monstrous hit just from the people who read the book. The people who are "outraged" over this must be the same bunch who tried to get "The Last Temptation of Christ" banned. I was living in Georgia when that movie came out and it was only allowed to play in one theater in Atlanta...nowhere else in the entire state. Plus we had to walk through a picket line of bible-thumping wackos just to get into the theater. Odd side note: The Knights Templar were used as the main characters in a string of cheap Spanish horror films from the seventies that started with "Tombs Of The Blind Dead". I never made it past the first 15 minutes of that one! -
Pick your favorite version(s) of a standard...

The instrumental version by the Red Garland Quintet w/Trane. I also really enjoy Andy Bey's recent version (as I think the lyrics are well understood and interpreted by Bey). -
Not funny. Can we spare the jokes about the mentally ill? Thanks.

I offer blood sacrifices to them in hope that the Goat of Mendes will protect my beautiful black box sets. Damn, I just ran out of black candles and eye of newt...gotta go to the store... Yes, I've watched WAY too many Hammer horror films in my life... -

Thanks Dan! You're in Florida, right? We should get together for a record shopping trip sometime. -
Lazaro, You can get Kenny's Village Vanguard album from iTunes for a decent price, it's just not domestically in print in physical form.

The reason that I ask is that I'm moving to Biloxi MS soon (my family lives there) and want to know if I'm going to get washed away in the first couple weeks that I'm there. I had to live through the torture last year of not knowing if my family was alive after Katrina, it took me over a week to reach everyone. Can't do that again, so I'd rather ride it out with them.

Hey, that's cool...if Phil floats your boat it's all good. He just doesn't happen to float mine, it sank. I can tolerate some of the Genesis material like ABACAB but have never liked the solo material.
