Why Some Say "No Thanks" to a Doorman
Shawn replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Fuck...doormen...give me a break! I grew up in a 100 year old, falling down, piece of shit house in rural West Virginia. Wood stove for heat, 40 year old furnace for backup, hand dug well that ran dry every summer, no fucking insulation and hard wood floors. I was real worried about the lack of fucking concierge service.... -
Anybody have a copy of the Thin Lizzy Peel sessions CD? It's going for like $80 fucking dollars on Ebay....

He can remaster all the Red Garland, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Gene Ammons, Mal Waldron, Jackie McLean, Miles Davis and John Coltrane while he's at it!!!!!

THANK YOU CHUCK!!!!

Well, more or less..but the analog to digital converters that were available in the 80's are absolute "crap" compared to the models available today. So even a straight "re-transfer" to tape would improve the sound. Also keep in mind that it took awhile for engineers to get used to the whole "digital" thing. The early CD's were often transferred directly from the vinyl masters...or they were transferred to tape and then sent to a mastering plant that was still using techniques left over from the vinyl era that no longer applied. You "master for the medium", at least that's the idea. With CD's, the medium has continued to evolve and change since it's inception....and engineers have to re-think their strategies with each new advance.

I find myself caring less and less about remastering and "constantly upgrading" my CD rack with new versions of things I already own. I just don't have the time, patience or money to stay up to date with what's been reissued, etc. Being an audio engineer, you'd think I'd be the pickiest person on the planet...but I can listen to just about anything. I have 2 stereo systems in my apartment, they sound almost entirely different from each other. RVG's sound great on my main system...they are too bright on my secondary. But for the most part, discs will sound okay on one system or another. TOCJ's seem to be the most "mellow" presentation, but not necessarily the most accurate. RVG's are very "in your face" and direct, instruments right up front, but often I hear things on them that I didn't notice on earlier versions. Conn's/Mosaics seem to be somewhere in the middle. The only thing that gets "grating" to me about the McMaster jobs are the constant "sizzle" of the cymbals. I buy discs from all the series, I tend to prefer the RVG's so that's the version I'll buy if it's available. But I only upgrade discs that are from the old 80's masterings.

what the f*ck happened to popular black music?
Shawn replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Miscellaneous Music
You need to add "Grunge" to your chart. Nirvana managed to destroy 20+ years of changes in the rock scene (some good, some awful) by killing it off entirely. There now seems to be either whiny "emo" rock...or over the top "nu metal/rap metal"...nothing in between. Both ends of the spectrum are shit and the middleground has been completely removed from public view (no place to play songs/videos). -

Which depending on where you live, can be a pretty powerful hatred! The guy in this story is an ass...but I've seen cops do STUPID shit on the roads. One of the dumbest individuals I've ever met was this moron in High School...must have had an IQ of about 50...he's now a deputy sheriff of an entire county. This guy had to take 12th grade 3 times!!!! Doesn't instill much confidence in ye old men in Blue...

It only takes about a minute to register online (after you pick up the card at Borders), once you register they automatically give you a choice of gifts...I took the 30% coupon for a CD or DVD.

By the way...I'm not "for" compressing the shit out of stuff...I prefer "maximum peak value" normalization and that leaves you the original depth of the recording. Blame the Online music stores...lots of complaints were sent to the labels about CD levels not being consistent enough in their digital content. At least I think that's part of the reason. Nothing sounds worse than compressed Classical music...that drives me INSANE!

You can't compare digital audio meters to analog meters (like a cassette deck). In digital land, there is nothing above 0 VU, if you go over 0 you're into digital distortion land. Even with the waveform being compressed as hell...as long as it doesn't go over 0 then it's fine. When mastering you use a digital limiter that won't allow any peaks to get that high (or normalize, whatever the preference). That waveform looks exactly like I would expect a modern CD to look.

McMaster has improved because the gear he's using has improved. One other thing I've noticed...is that his remasterings sound better on my "all digital" setup (optical ouput from DVD/SACD to Sony DTS amplifier) than on my other system.

There are some odd ducks swimming around in this pond we call America.... -
Lon's word is gold with me...I'll be buying that one next. I'm a Dorham fanatic!

My guess is that they are using a digital limiter to maximize the volume of the CD. But that's pretty much standard practice these days.

...and Soundgarden was better than either of them. One of my friends used to say that there should be a road sign outside of Seattle that reads "Welcome to Seattle, Please Tune Down To D"

Well...they are earlier versions of songs (Gettin' & Jettin' is a pre-cursor to Up A Step/No Room For Squares, etc). But they are very different renditions. The main joy of this album though...is that it's a quartet setting...and it's Wynton Kelly, Hank & Wynton were definitely on the same wavelength.

I thought this was going to be about the Michael Mann movie starring James Caan.

Please...a new cover for Another Workout...PLEASE!!!! I've been waiting for this session to be re-issued for a LONG time, actually one of my favorite Hank's (anything with this rhythm section). It's a fun brain test as well, since Hank re-recorded the originals (and sometimes more than once) under different titles later on....
