OK I've received the cd and listened a couple of times. I think the two cuts are from a different session that the first five. I can hardly hear the bass but the drummer doesn't sound like Roy Haynes to me. None of his "snap, crackle" on the snare and way more ride cymbal than he uses. Also sounds more like Coltrane in '56 than Coltrane in '58 to me. So maybe JSngry dos get to hear 2 cuts form the summer of '57. And of course I could be wrong. (I often am.) BTW the on-line Coltrane discography lists all 7 cuts as being from 1958.

Lots of footage of the Basie band in it too.

The Blue Note and Verve both claim it's Cologne. The Blue Note says it's from January 5 though according to the Jazzline the tour didn't begin until January 11th. The Verve says January 23rd which is plausible since the Jazzline (obviously a different concert: Billie's Blues is with the trio on it vs a large group on the Blue Note/Verve) and the Jazzline says their concert is from January 22nd.

I believe that the first release called "Discovery" said the set was by the 1957 group. The Blue Not box set includes notes by Bob Blumenthal which state "...the bassist and drummer were clearly not Wilbur Ware and Shadow Wilson, who had completed Monk's quartet as the album notes mistakenly listed. Further research has determined that the performances were taped on September 11, 1958 when bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik and drummer Roy Haynes were regulars in Monk's quartet ad Coltrane was sitting in for the absent Johnny Griffin. What we hear, from a source tape made by Coltrane's wife Naima, is a complete set..." The notes also say " on the original CD issue of this session, the pitch ran 1/2 step too high." When I get "the complete" cd I'll see what they say about the dates etc.

Maybe everybody but me already knows about this, but when I was buying something on Amazon this popped up: "Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane Complete Live At The Five Spot 1958". It contains 2 more tracks than were issued on the Bluenote cd and Monk box set.

Anyone know how many (if any) of these performances were issued by ESP?

The master takes set is the terrible one. Metal, ugly, clumsy. Didn't know about the format of the master takes set. The complete set is very clumsy also. Yes. It's really difficult t get the cd album and the notes album out of the box!

That is one of the greatest albums ever made, along with the Latin Jazz All-Stars' Jazz Heat Bongo Beat on Crown. It's in the recent Charlie Parker Records box set.

I think that was issued in the Verve box set.

a bunch of my friends just recommended Erik Larson's next book-- the one about the US ambassador to Nazi Germany. I haven't read it because though I was fascinated by Devil in the White City I thought the writing was cheezy. MY friends assured me that his next book was great. And he has a new one out about The Lusitania which sounds good.

People in Santa Barbara are complaining that Netflix DVD deliveries are no longer coming the day after being ordered but there seems to be a consensus ghat this is netflix trying to ween us off atoms and on to bytes.

Having lived with the Canadian Post Office for (still, though barely) most of my life I find the USPS terrific. And I love their stamps.

Which version? For some reason I liked the Scandinavian one much better than the Fincher version.
