  1. I love Trane on that tour. Wynton Kelly too. Stitt is ok but after listening to Trane...... And knowing a bit about Steve Voce I doubt if he likes any Coltrane.
  2. I've always had a problem with stations and DJ's that don't announce what they're playing. Some stations now show what's being played on your dial or whatever you call the window in your radio and I often grab my phone to use Shazam. Then when some announcers do talk they ramble on and on. I'm not talking about just jazz stations or programs.
  3. Interesting review of an anniversary concert here: http://thebluemoment.com/
  4. The New DESOR lists 16 recorded performances of Koko . (Has anyone ever worked out what percentage of EKE performances were recorded by someone? Later in his career it seems that nearly every time he played someone had a recorder there.)
  5. Did he tell you where to buy the video?
  6. Saw Allen Toussaint with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band last week. The PHJB sounded more like a New Orleans brass band than a Dixieland band which was fine with me and it was great to hear Toussaint backed by a Sousaphone .
  7. I guess he's dancing before the Lord.... http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/27/arts/dance/bunny-briggs-tap-dancing-virtuoso-dies-at-92-.html?ref=obituaries&_r=0
  8. A long multi post discussion on the Duke Lym list serve led me to this website: http://billdearango.com/site/index.htm The only examples of DeArango's playing I owned were on a few of Dizzy's tracks for RCA. He was still recording in 1995 and there's one cd or download available from Amazon which has DeArango on guitar with Joe Levano on sax, two Schullers (sons of Gunther?) on bass and drums and is very modern. His life story as told on the website is really interesting as were some of the stories told by Duke Lym members. All of his music I've been able to hear is pretty great. Am I the only one who didn't know about this guy?
  9. Well I'm older than you so I do remember when my family got this record. What I don't remember is whether the song was split in two on the Lp. BTW it's fitting that it was used in The Glen Miller Story: I have a Jack Teagarden record of a live concert on which he introduces Basin Street by saying that he and Glen Miller wrote the introduction to it at the request of Ben Pollack. Pops plays, but doesn't sing, the intro: it's the part that goes "Won't you come along with me...".
  10. Great choice. Maria's really underrated-- as is her ex.
  11. Saw her last year. She was still great.
  12. Well you were honest enough to say "imo" instead of "imho".
  13. And your reason is.....? A debate about Apple and their skinning 30% off every music sale, and other things, would certainly derail the thread - and my issues are not entirely related to music. So I don't think such a debate would be fruitful. People who use Apple and like them will be pro - people like me anti. I can ssure you though, I will never buy an Apple product or service, so it's not an option for me. I hope you understand - I'm not avoiding the issue, it's just that I can predict the path any debate would take. It wasn't a rhetorical question. I'm seriously curious about your reasons. Apple's 30% is (I think) less than most brick and mortar stores take.
  14. And your reason is.....?
  15. Wow that Little Richard Lp brings back memories. I never owned it, but a friend did and we played it over and over again. I did have the first two Elvis Lps and 2 out of 3 of the Eps culled from the first Fats Domino Lp. And then I think I never bought anything but jazz until around 1967.
  16. I remember Lorne Michaels offering the Beatles $10,000 or some other small amount to perform on SNL and said they could split it anyway they want if they didn't think Ringo should get a full share.
  17. Disney Hall seems pretty great to me though the only time I heard classical music there I was sitting behind the orchestra. It was great. John Adams who was conducting played air violin.
  18. I saw him recently at the LA Palladium. He was great. I think he's having more fun now than he would with Zep.
  19. Monk & Joe Turner!! Where did this come from? (I saw Turner play once at a press party during the Cannes Film Festival. Everyone pretty well ignored him. I'd never head of him at the time but I remember thinking that he was the real thing.
  20. Belated Birthday Blessings. (Anything for alliteration.)
  21. Every time I see this topic I briefly think it's about the Jean Renoir film of this title that is equally hard to come by.
  22. I'm pretty sure that Criterion doesn't own a piece of Hulu. Hulu has just licensed the films from Criterion and eventually their license will expire. (Though they may renew it.)
