I don't think it was for tax purposes but rather that as a member of ASCAP Duke couldn't record any of his songs whereas Mercer and Billy Strayhorn were members of BMI.

New Lester Young set from Mosaic Records coming
medjuck replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Some triplicates in my collection when I get this but I can't wait. Maybe I'll be able to get rid of some older sets. (And what are the Goodman sides?) -
Happy B'day!

It also has a very nice box which is a variation of the other boxes.

So did Lady Day. (Though not 48 years ago.)

Is streaming technology saving the music industry?
medjuck replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Audio Talk
Guys: Media is plural. Medium is singular. (The pedant in me comes to the surface after a drink or two and I'm having a gin and tonic.) Weren't we talking about multiple forms of audio media in that conversation? Then you should say say "...the media themselves", not "the media itself...". And I'm sober this morning. Thank you for the clarification. I got a different message from your previous post. Though my question does still stand. But you didn't answer his question, Allen. Did the media itself make a difference? I would have to think it didn't. The mastering, no matter the format, should sound the same. Guys: Media is plural. Medium is singular. And the band loves you madly. Happy B'day!

What I find strangest about this is that Bill Cosby surely had no trouble getting laid. Why resort to drugging women? A friend of mine suggested that he probably liked sex with unconscious women. BTW Years ago I met one of the woman who have recently come forward and I believe her. She has nothing to gain and lots to lose

I saw this in Montreal (with English titles) when it first came out, but I didn't know the music wasn't from the Atlantic recording sessions. Is this otherwise unreleased Coltrane? Do you have any more info? The music track might possibly be in the NFB archive.

Musicians who just lost the ability to play
medjuck replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
He got it together for The Sound of Jazz (both the record and the one solo on the broadcast) but I find it makes me sad to listen to some of his later work. -
Is this this the Norman Granz' JATP recording? According to the noes in the cd the concert was put on by Leonard Feather and Symphony Syd. There's a couple of earlier posts here with pictures of the cd but I can't find a number to refer to them with the new software.

But is that strong enough, just because Mitch Miller's record label said so? Using that criterion I guess we have to dismiss Billie Holiday and Charlie Christian too.

Ditto on St. Nick's. He plays things you don't always hear him play. I wish the other soloists were recorded. Probably Jimmy Knepper was saving tape. He probably was, but I don't mind - it's part of the legacy. Bird was surpassing himself that night. After all those years and playing the LP and now the CD countless times, I still find the atmosphere totally mesmerizing. Ditto on St. Nick's. He plays things you don't always hear him play. I wish the other soloists were recorded. Probably Jimmy Knepper was saving tape. I just discovered that there is more of Bird at St. Nick's available than what is on the Prestige/Fantasy release. There's a download at Amazon of "The Complete Bird at St. Nick's" with a dozen or so additional tracks. (CD and Lp too.) Listening to it I'm surprised by the number of times Bird exchanges 4s with Red Rodney. I don't recall him doing it that often. Oooops I just noticed that the extra cuts on "The Complete...." are not the same as those listed by Peter Losin. Don't know what to think.

I never thought of her as a jazz artist though I like some of her work. "Mississippi Goddam" is pretty terrific and " Backlash Blues", which I think I heard for the first time when I saw the film, is good too. Words by Langston Hughes.

Has the bottom fallen out of the Mosaic market?
medjuck replied to Dmitry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I think digital downloads began to trend downwards last year too. Vinyl was up but started from a very low base. -
Wow! You're right! WTF! Why are they playing that?

I'm pretty sure there's already a thread about this release but I can't find it using search. On the first disc Bobby Tucker introduces two songs ("Good Morning Heartache" and" I Wonder Where Our Love has Gone") with a tune that's very familiar to me but I can't remember what it is. Then to drive me even more nuts, on cd 2 Carl Drinkard uses the same tune as an outro on "I Cried for You" and "What A Little Moonlight Can Do". Please someone: name that song.

So sorry to hear this. R.I.P.

Is it political to discuss this? Seems callous that there's no mention of it on this board. How about if we just discuss what music is best to play on hearing about it. Ghost of Miles suggested "Alabama" on FB. Weirdly enough reading that was when I first knew something bad had happened.

IIRC Fellini uses the Ray Charles version in La Dolce Vida.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
medjuck replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Saw Les McCann this afternoon. (Yes, you read that right, Les McCann on a Sunday afternoon.) Ragged but still funky. When someone from the audience kept yelling for "Compared to What" Les yelled back "Shut the fuck up! Don't you know any other songs?" Made my day, though he did finish with "Compared to What" and we all sang along. -
I didn't read them before. Thanks. Do any other versions use Ole Miss?
