  1. I've used a cheapo one and it worked. You could see on the disc that it had been doctored but they sounded fine.
  2. I'm having trouble finding the clip-- probably my fault but the links keep taking me to a generic Youtube page. What Jo Stafford performance are we talking about? There seem to be several available.
  3. A lot of these are far from obscure. It's interesting how many of them made an impression because they were about children.
  4. I liked the book though I found the introduction (by someone else) a little self serving.

The Jazz Icons DVD of two televised concerts is great. Especially the first concert.
  6. I've heard they're working on a Fletcher Henderson set and let's hope they do the Ellington set they're talked about.
  7. Well according to Bobby McFerrin the whole world is hard wired to use the pentatonic scale: http://www.ted.com/talks/ bobby_mcferrin_hacks_your_brain_with_music.html
  8. I'm 67 and didn't hear a thing.
  9. Zero Hour was originally a CBC drama called Flight Into Danger. It was written by Arthur Haley who was then living in Canada. IIRC The show was so popular it was shown twice (maybe even performed twice- this was before the days of taping.) It was then done in the US on IIRC the Kraft Suspense show. Haley went on to become a popular novelist. He wrote Airport, the novel on which the film is based.
  10. I scored about a 30 even though I'm of teh supposed "Silent" generation. (B ased on my friends I can only say "silent, my ass".
  11. I just saw him with the SF Jazz Collective. I presume that he's on their latest cd,
  12. Berrigan may not like this Ebert story: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-ebert2-2010mar02,0,4834863.story
  13. IIRC I once heard Mark Cantor say that on the Chet Baker show he played some Bix! (Of course no copy of that show is known to exist.)
  14. Happy B'day Garth. (BTW I'm seeing K Armatage in 2 weeks at some cinema studies conference in LA.)
  15. Does anyone have the Esquire Magazine that first published the photo? IIRC they had the perceptiveness to entitle that section of the magazine "The Golden Age of Jazz". Most of us always think the golden age was the day before yesterday not the time we're actually in.
  16. Ran into him in an elevator at the Toronto Film Festival. Asked him a question about a flattering review he'd done of one of our films: he responded by writing on a small note pad he keeps at hand and then showing me the answer. Also gave me a thumbs up on mention of the film. Nice to get a personal one. Years ago he wrote a great short book about the Cannes Film Festival called 2 Weeks in the Sun (Or something like that.)
  17. I don't know the economics of it all but I'm surprised they've never done the Shelly Mann at the Black Hawk box set and now a bootlegger has done it. And why no Miles with Monk on Xmas Eve 1954 on one cd? (I think it would all fit, including the arguments.) Again, I don't know the economics but if it's not economical to reissue sessions on cd is it financially better to make everything (and I mean everything) available for download? (I know this will drive audiophiles nuts.)

    New Miles?

I just realized I have at least part of this on a MOON CD called Double Image. It claims to be Miles in Paris but Peter Losin says it's from Rome, October 27, 1969.
  21. I'm confused (as is often the case). Is this the actual performance Allen's taking about? (One of the comments suggests that a performance from Woodstock was deleted form Youtube.) If not, id it on an available cd? (My wife heard this and just mentioned that she saw Johnny Winter at Massey Hall.)

Contains the Rome and Copenhagen performances by the 1969 Miles Davis Quintet with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. This band toured Europe from October 26 to November 9, 1969. In his autobiography, Miles would state that this group was really a bad motherfucker! 15 tracks. Gambit. 2010. Releases March 2 Has this "lost quintet" cd been available before? Anyone have it and recommend it?
  23. A friend of mine just published a book about New Orleans with Lulu. Let me find out how he likes them.
