The liner notes point out that these 2 broadcasts were longer than usual-- 70 minutes. (Because of it being football season and stations joining late-- not that I really understand.) However each cd is just over 63 minutes long. What's up with that? The broadcasts are usually 55 minutes long at that's about what they come out at on the other releases. BTW From listening, I'm under the impression that the Date with the Duke broadcasts weren't sponsored by the Treasury department until the 4th show.

I do. The machine's advertising seemed to imply that it was plug and play but actually I had to buy something for it to work with the WiFi. It's pretty good. Not quite as good as having a DVD playing but it is instant gratification. You also seem to be able to watch an unlimited number of films one after another.

They did repeat it once once on BET. Terrific.

I have what I think is the "handsome set"-- it does have the lp facsimile sleeves. It's alittle difficult to get the books (one for cds one for notes) in and out of the box without bending the envelope with the facsimiles. (I think I just bent them checking out what I had.)

I saw that band in Montreal in the '60s. Didn't know much about Herman then but enjoyed the band a lot. Probably one of the last great big bands.

I got excited too soon: I thought there might be some film footage of Django (of which there is very little).

When I went to see this there was also (on the side) an Ornette concert from 1987 with Cherry, Higgins and Haden! I didn't even know that they'd played together at that late a date. I love youtube

I just logged on at 10:30 am or so my time--1:30pm for the board and when I hit "View New Content" I don't get anything posted earlier than about an hour ago. This has been happening for the last few days. What's up with that?

I just finished reading the above titled book by Greg Milner. It should perhaps be subtitled "an anecdotal history" but the anecdotes are quite interesting if depressing. The most depressing chapter is about dynamic compression and clipping. In it he says that these techniques have begun to be used in jazz recordings though he doesn't name any. On the other hand he tells how the backlash against them began when a fan compared Chili Pepper' Californication (the worst mastered cd ever apparently) with some remasters of Miles and Trane records. I'm sure many audiophiles will agree with his contention that analogue is better than digital. But then he also suggest that acoustic recording is better than electric recording and that cylinders are better than discs. Even he seems to understand that that way lies madness.

Oh,no! He was a great guy. Used to spend a lot of time with him when I first moved to Toronto and he was working at Sam's. Talked to him on the phone fairly often after I moved to LA. (To the best of my knowledge he never did get e-mail.) I guess I'm at that age where I shouldn't be surprised to hear that a friend has died but it' still a shock. I'll really miss him.

I know Ornithology is based on the changes to How High the Moon and Anthropology (like many others) on I Got Rhythm, but what's the bop tune (or tunes) based on Honeysuckle Rose ? Is there a listing of all these somewhere? (I ask because I've been listening to an Ellington live date from the '50s and in the middle of Honeysuckle Rose the band plays a chorus of a familiar bop tune I can't remember the name of.)

One of those Verve "Jazz Round Midnight" has Davenport Blues from this session. Very influenced by the Gil Evans version. I'd love to hear more form this session.

They're both small but good. IIRC Sonic Boom is big and has no vinyl but I've found some interesting things there. Soundscapes just a block or 2 west of She Said Boom on College is a very good new cd store.

David Thomson's "The Moment of Psycho". Very short book about the film. Recommended if you like the film as much as I do.

I thought you were referring to "Baby I've got News For You" (I think that's the title which Woody recorded before Ray Charles did it on "Genius + Jazz".

A concert recorded in stereo in '53?!! Maybe it was recorded with 2 mikes but I can't believe that it was meant to be in stereo.

Paul Horn is a good friend of a neighbor of mine. I've run into them a couple of times while we were all out walking. Saw him perform in LA in the 80's.
