  1. I think the best print of it as at the UCLA tv archive. Given to them by Jack Smight the director. Maybe you could borrow it for a restoration. (Fat chance-- but I do know the head of the archive who's a music fan and I'll ask him the next time I see him. No-one should hold their breath.
  2. I second that. I was about to ask the same thing.
  3. e-mail : joe@futurshock.com (notice no 'e' in futurshock-- I was never good at spelling.) Wow. I'm stunned . Like to thank Jim a lot. Like to help set up a new forum but right now I have no time-- starting a new film which means 16 hour days and now no Organissimo to look forward to when I get home. Can still send money if needed. And if nothing comes of attempts to revive or replace the board I''m going to miss all you guys. I've come to regard this board as my facebook page. I may have to get a real one.
  4. Hey my wife tells me the Hampton set arrived at my home today! Unfortunately (to quote Bob Dylan) I'm not there.
  5. Just got their printed catalogue in the mail. So did my wife! What list were they using? Is there one of women who's husbands buy too many cds? Anyway: I'm thinking of buying the 2 Shelly Mannes at the Blackhawk i don't have and then might as well get $50 worth. Soooo.. I like what the catalogue says about the Monk at the 5 Spot twofer. Any one recommend it? Or anything else? Especially the OOPs.
  6. I hope this means that there will be a DVD releaseof it. I tried to get a legitimate release of it through CBS who own it but they claimed that the Musicians Union wanted way too much money. (The musicians were hired for a tv show only.) I wanted to add Milt Hinton's photos from that day and to interview Nat Hentoff. I'd still like to hear what Hentoff has to say: I know he's very proud of it but I'd like to know more about the tv show and the Lp that came out: eg: why aren't Monk and Gerry Mulligan on the record? I think I read somewhere that Mulligan wanted double scale. I presume they just thought Monk was too far out.
  7. Reminded me of the novels of Alan Furst (though I've only read a couple). Except that Melville is even colder.
  8. Is Who's Next considered late Who? I like it better than anything before or after. Saw them at their first gig after the death of Moon. In a small bull ring (is that possible?) outside Cannes. Loved it but was with a friend who'd seen them before and said it could never be the same without Moon.
  9. Am I the only one who liked the old design better?
  10. I felt pretty much the same way the first time I saw it, but seeing it a second time with no expectations to be thwarted I wasn't as unhappy about the ending.
  11. \\ I thought it was going to be John Coltrane!
  12. Probably makes most of his money from capital gains or dividends both of which are taxed at 15% in the US.
  13. If I remember it correctly on the witness stand during the trial of the Chicago 8 (7?) he made the profound declaration "nuance is everything".
  14. As I recall this was an argument made by Bush but there is not one documented case of anyone having to sell a farm because of estate taxes. (Actually as I write this it seems to me unlikely that there aren't some small farmers with $4M in assests-- maybe they get special depreciation allowances or something. )
  15. Sorry to hear that. Hope she gets the cast off soon. Don't beat youself up-- it seems to be part of growing up. My daughter was in and out ofthe emergency rooms with broken bones, sprains and even burns. She's now 21 and doing fine. (Strangely my son-- who's younger-- had many fewer injuries, though he did break his wrist once.)
  16. I've nver been to Safari Sam's before, but I'll try to make this date! I missed you guys the last time around, and am kicking myself for doing so. Cheers, Shane I did see you last time through and IO'm going to try to see you again!
  17. Thnink they'll do a box set of his last years at Columbia?
  18. This is UK only right? And BTW it sure isn't all there titles yet.
  19. Am I correct in thinking that with this set Columbia has released in a box set every studio cut by Mile they put out through '75 except the cuts sans Coltrane from Someday My Prince will Come? I almost wrote every thing they recorded but according to the notes to this box there were at least a couple of things considered not worthy of release.
  20. "Duke Ellington and His Orchestra made some accidental stereo recordings on February 3, 1932 for RCA Victor. It was a fairly standard practice in that era to record using more than one microphone and disc cutter. The various versions could be compared, to see which had the best microphone positioning. It also allowed for safety masters in case something happened to the original. Although the records are fairly rare, a collector had both versions and noticed that while they appeared to be the same performance, the sound mix was different on each. When the two recordings were synchronized, it became stereo." Various sources claim these recordings were meant to be in stereo. They were part of an experimental series (mainly classical recordings I believe) that were recorded at 33 1/3 rpm. However I think (with no real knowlege) that it was just a question of using 2 microphones-- though they were very well placed if they had wanted stereo. And the answer to my original question is: I had it very wrong.
  21. I noticed in the 2 new Trane box sets from Concord that some Prestige records from as late as 1958 were Mono only. I've alwasy thought of '57 as the transition year. (ie very few stereo recordings from '55, some in '56, lots by the end of '57 and almost everything in stereo by '58. Do I just have it wrong?
  22. Saw her perform once at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Can't claim that I remember that much about it after 30 or 40 years except that I liked it.
  23. Mine's got a dent on the upper left even though CDU packed it in that styrofoam popcorn stuff. I noticed that as with the only other metal box (the Miles/Trane) it's slightly difficult to get the "book" in and out. But great looking package.
  24. Happy B'day and many more!!!!!!!
  25. Just used the "search music" at the top of this page and got it for $99 plus shiping at CD Universe where it's number 2 on the best seller list!
