Great place but I can't complain about Santa Barbara.

I agree, but don't tell that to anyone in Toronto. They think that after NY they're the theater center of North America.

I've just donated (plus shipping), but I'm curious as to what the immediate impetus for the pledge drive was -- or did Allen just have too much coffee this morning?

The Hawk footage does show up-- I think at the very end of the first disc.

Look on your remote and see if there is an "Angle" button. It might be near "Subtitle" or "Audio." If there is, then during that part of the DVD you can press the angle button and see the alternates. There may a hesitation of a couple of seconds (or maybe not) as it switches to the different angle. Thanks for the heads up! I did do that and was able to get a diffrent agle but I had to keep pressing it and every so an differnt agle would appear (sometimes in a picture withni a picture format.)

When I ordered the Jazz Icon box from Amazon they did one of those "you might enjoy.... or whatever" and showed this 2 DVD set selling for $11.97! It just came and it 's terrific. Has "Jammin' the Blue" plus interviews, plus never seen elsewhere photos of Bird, Prez etc. on the bonus disc. The first disc is a film (sort of) narrated by Granz which consists of the Gjon Mili footage of Bird, Bean, Prez, Ella etc playing Ballade, Celebrity, Pennie from Heaven etc. This footage was included in the "Greatest Jazz Films" DVD that was discussed earlier on this board, but it's much better looking and sounding here. The Bird plays Celebrity section even has alternate angles-- a a feature I'd never seen on any other DVD and which I'm not sure how to use. That's followed by Ellington with a trio playing for Joan Miro at the Gallery Maight, Count Basie at Montreux 1977, Joe Pass playing solo in 1979, Ella from '79 and Oscar Peterson with Dizzy, Clark Terry and Eddie Lockjaw Davis at Montreux in '77. Each section is introudced by Granz. I just I looked at Amazon and the price is now $17.97 but it's worth it.

Bones Howe once told me that he paid himself to get stereo recordings for some of the sessions he engineered. (Apparently Granz didn't want to go stereo at first.) Bones kept the master tapes but much later sold them to Verve.

Slide rules were beautiful things. I guess they're antiques now.

New look for the Mosaic site.

Where's "coming attractions"? -
According to my son (who's done a lot of research on this film) there's a disagreement between Scott and the writers as to whether or not Dekker is a replicant.

Adam if you were in the 2nd row you had a better view than me-- I was in the balcony. So what was Al playing? Don Heckman's rather un-insightful review in the Times this morning claims that it was an electric bass.

Saw Ornette at Royce Hall last night. With Denardo, Tony Falanga on one bass, Charnette Moffett on another and Al MacDowell on what the program claimed was an electric bass but it sure sounded like a guitar to me. Great show. I'd never seen him live before, but his repertoire was much more diverse than that of concerts I've heard on record. At one point they played a Bach Suite for Cello (I presume there's more than one but I don't know the number-- it's the famous one; my wife's been using it to practice on electric guitar. ) On most numbers Falanga played arco and led off with the theme. Turnaround was played even more like a dirty blues than it was on Sound Grammar. At first I thought MacDowell was using a wah wah pedal-- then I realized it was Moffett. And Ornette did quote "If I Loved You". I guess he does it whenever he plays Turnaround. Speaking of quotes: There was one number that kept turning into The Star Spangled Banner. Anyone know what that would be? A little bit of trumpet (used mainly for punctuation it seemed to me) and one fiery violin solo. At the end he got a huge standing ovation. Someone yelled "We love you" and someone else called for him to move back to LA. For an encore he played what I think is Lonely Woman. I was enthralled. BTW Is Charnett related to Charles?

I ordered the box set from Amazon because I wanted the bonus disc with the Trane cut. I already owned a DVD called Wes Montgomery in Europe with the Belgium broadcast and what I presumed was the same London Concert. Figured I'd trade that one in, but I've discovered that the London concert on the older disc is a different one! From March 25th (they say) with the Maburn, Harper, Lovelace quartet. BTW The Belgium concert looks much better on the Jazz Icon release.

I second that, if you like the sound why change it? Ignorance. Didn't know I could do that.

My 15 year old Velodyne (sp?) subwoofer is starting to rattle. (OK it's been rattling for a long time.) Anyone got suggestions for a replacement?

Burns' THE WAR gets drubbed in the New Yorker
medjuck replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Can you give any example of this from the first 2 episodes? I've always presumed that he does the opposite. ie. put together his interviews, and then find film footage to illustrate them I usually find the interviews interesting, but the clips rather random. Since he doesn't source them we never really know where they're from. Is the footage actually of the battle being discussed? Is it even from the same continent? In Jazz if you were familiar with the footage you became aware that he even played different music on the soundtrack than that being played by the musicians on the visual track. Ilike documentaries taht explain where there footagae is from and how it came to be. -
NEW YORK CALLING: From Blackout to Bloomberg

I (fittingly) bought this while I was in NY last month. The introduction is by Berman but the intros to each section are unsigned. Are they by Berger? -
An unsettling and shocking view of Auschwitz

I think these photos are really important. When we see the photos of the atrocities we all like to believe that they are committed by people who are somehow unlike ourselves. They aren't. We all like to believe that we would never work at a concentraton camp but do we know that we couldn't be convinced that it was for the betterment of the country? And (to finally get this moved to the politics thread) I found living in the US in the months leading up to the invasion of Iraq pretty scary. It seemed to me that when the government and the media collude they can convince most of the populace of almost anything. It's informative to go back and read what the such supposedly liberal publications as the New Yorker and the NY times wrote in those months. -
And why does the audience begin clapping in the middle of the bass solo on Stella? Has Miles walked back onto the stage?

Terry Gross interviewed Greenspan today. Didn't discuss his career in music but ended with an airshot of The Henry Jerome Band. She said Al Cohn was in it.

how many people have same name as you?

According to this data base there are no Medjucks in the US. I've often thought I wsa a figment of someone's imagination. -
I heard an interview with Johnny Mandel once where he talked about playing in the band with Greenspan.

I was a little disappointed in the record but I'll give it another listen. Saw her singing with The Foo Fighters and she was pretty great.
