  1. Sorry to hear that. Hope she gets the cast off soon. Don't beat youself up-- it seems to be part of growing up. My daughter was in and out ofthe emergency rooms with broken bones, sprains and even burns. She's now 21 and doing fine. (Strangely my son-- who's younger-- had many fewer injuries, though he did break his wrist once.)
  2. I've nver been to Safari Sam's before, but I'll try to make this date! I missed you guys the last time around, and am kicking myself for doing so. Cheers, Shane I did see you last time through and IO'm going to try to see you again!
  3. Thnink they'll do a box set of his last years at Columbia?
  4. This is UK only right? And BTW it sure isn't all there titles yet.
  5. Am I correct in thinking that with this set Columbia has released in a box set every studio cut by Mile they put out through '75 except the cuts sans Coltrane from Someday My Prince will Come? I almost wrote every thing they recorded but according to the notes to this box there were at least a couple of things considered not worthy of release.
  6. "Duke Ellington and His Orchestra made some accidental stereo recordings on February 3, 1932 for RCA Victor. It was a fairly standard practice in that era to record using more than one microphone and disc cutter. The various versions could be compared, to see which had the best microphone positioning. It also allowed for safety masters in case something happened to the original. Although the records are fairly rare, a collector had both versions and noticed that while they appeared to be the same performance, the sound mix was different on each. When the two recordings were synchronized, it became stereo." Various sources claim these recordings were meant to be in stereo. They were part of an experimental series (mainly classical recordings I believe) that were recorded at 33 1/3 rpm. However I think (with no real knowlege) that it was just a question of using 2 microphones-- though they were very well placed if they had wanted stereo. And the answer to my original question is: I had it very wrong.
  7. I noticed in the 2 new Trane box sets from Concord that some Prestige records from as late as 1958 were Mono only. I've alwasy thought of '57 as the transition year. (ie very few stereo recordings from '55, some in '56, lots by the end of '57 and almost everything in stereo by '58. Do I just have it wrong?
  8. Saw her perform once at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Can't claim that I remember that much about it after 30 or 40 years except that I liked it.
  9. Mine's got a dent on the upper left even though CDU packed it in that styrofoam popcorn stuff. I noticed that as with the only other metal box (the Miles/Trane) it's slightly difficult to get the "book" in and out. But great looking package.
  10. Happy B'day and many more!!!!!!!
  11. Just used the "search music" at the top of this page and got it for $99 plus shiping at CD Universe where it's number 2 on the best seller list!
  12. During the AL baseball playoff on Saturday they showed a clip of Fred Lynn (sp?) running into the wall and mixed very low on the soundtrack so you could barely hear it was (for some reason I don't understand) "Sister Sadie".
  13. Great place but I can't complain about Santa Barbara.
  14. I agree, but don't tell that to anyone in Toronto. They think that after NY they're the theater center of North America.
  15. Pansies?
  16. I've just donated (plus shipping), but I'm curious as to what the immediate impetus for the pledge drive was -- or did Allen just have too much coffee this morning?
  17. The Hawk footage does show up-- I think at the very end of the first disc.
  18. The Hawk footage does show up-- I think at the very end of the first disc.
  19. Look on your remote and see if there is an "Angle" button. It might be near "Subtitle" or "Audio." If there is, then during that part of the DVD you can press the angle button and see the alternates. There may a hesitation of a couple of seconds (or maybe not) as it switches to the different angle. Thanks for the heads up! I did do that and was able to get a diffrent agle but I had to keep pressing it and every so an differnt agle would appear (sometimes in a picture withni a picture format.)
  20. When I ordered the Jazz Icon box from Amazon they did one of those "you might enjoy.... or whatever" and showed this 2 DVD set selling for $11.97! It just came and it 's terrific. Has "Jammin' the Blue" plus interviews, plus never seen elsewhere photos of Bird, Prez etc. on the bonus disc. The first disc is a film (sort of) narrated by Granz which consists of the Gjon Mili footage of Bird, Bean, Prez, Ella etc playing Ballade, Celebrity, Pennie from Heaven etc. This footage was included in the "Greatest Jazz Films" DVD that was discussed earlier on this board, but it's much better looking and sounding here. The Bird plays Celebrity section even has alternate angles-- a a feature I'd never seen on any other DVD and which I'm not sure how to use. That's followed by Ellington with a trio playing for Joan Miro at the Gallery Maight, Count Basie at Montreux 1977, Joe Pass playing solo in 1979, Ella from '79 and Oscar Peterson with Dizzy, Clark Terry and Eddie Lockjaw Davis at Montreux in '77. Each section is introudced by Granz. I just I looked at Amazon and the price is now $17.97 but it's worth it.
  21. Bones Howe once told me that he paid himself to get stereo recordings for some of the sessions he engineered. (Apparently Granz didn't want to go stereo at first.) Bones kept the master tapes but much later sold them to Verve.
  22. Slide rules were beautiful things. I guess they're antiques now.
  23. Where's "coming attractions"?
  24. According to my son (who's done a lot of research on this film) there's a disagreement between Scott and the writers as to whether or not Dekker is a replicant.
  25. Adam if you were in the 2nd row you had a better view than me-- I was in the balcony. So what was Al playing? Don Heckman's rather un-insightful review in the Times this morning claims that it was an electric bass.
