  1. The Harrod book Ghost references lists the extant shows and the Lp releases. A brief comparison of the 2 suggests that a lot-- but not all-- of the Lps are from shows that no longer exist (as far as we know right now).
  2. Saw the Alvin Ailey dance troupe a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed by the opening number "Finding Free" which had music I'm presuming was written specifically for it by Matthew Whitaker. I really liked the music but listening to some of his albums on Spotify do not find them nearly as interesting. Anyone here heard him recently and have an opinion?
  3. I have both volumes. I think Peter Losin's presumption that there was more music than that released here is based on the brevity of the last set. I'm not sure but I'll ask him. Stardust is, I believe, the entire song but it's a feature for Stitt with no Miles.
  4. Rick Moranis said that they were once planning a sequel: "Spaceballs 3-- the Search for Spaceballs 2".
  5. I'm surprised that no one has discussed the Mingus. I really like it. the liner notes led me to expect the bass to be almost inaudible and the bass playing to be weak. I didn't find either to be true. The ensemble playing is really tight (though I may prefer the looseness of the old Workshop recordings) and Danny Richmond is his usual kick ass self.

    Andy Bey RIP

IIRC he used to perform with "Andy and the Bey Sisters" in Toronto in the '60s.
  7. I have. So has Miles '65. (I'm presuming you mean the irregularly held Ellington Conferences. There is no international Ellington Society. The conferences are put on by individual groups from different countries. I don't think there's one scheduled at the moment. )
  8. There's a cd of that with Bird's performance added.
  9. Isn't the one I listed a different record?
  10. I ordered it from Amazon about a month ago and it still hasn't come.
  11. Listening to the local college radio station on Saturday and heard something I really liked which turned out to be a Rashied Ali record that was just released this year! Rashied Ali Quintet Blues for Rashied (feat. Frank Lowe) Sidewalks In Motion (feat. Frank Lowe) Survival Records 2025 Rashied Ali - drums Frank Lowe - saxophone Jumaane Smith - trumpet Andrew Bemkey - piano Joris Teepe - bass
  12. I was listening to the local college radio station and the announcer mentioned that Nimbus West was started here in Santa Barbara and recorded at least one of their records at the local Lobero Theater (where Charles Lloyd plays every year-- often on his birthday). This article suggests that, though they did record the piano solos at the Lobero, the company was based in LA. Anyone know if the Lobero Theater is even the one in SAnta Barbara? https://www.analogplanet.com/content/horace-tapscott-tom-albach-and-story-nimbus-west-records-part-2
  13. I was a big fan as a kid. ( I'm surprised he's only 7 years older than me.) Now I only have his first Lp because of the Gil Evans arrangements.
  14. Agreed (though IIRC, it leaves out the dialogue with Monk from the 12/24/54 session).
  15. Just came back from seeing the Charles LLoyd Delta trio (Jason Moran piano and Marvin Sewell guitar) at the 600 seat Lobero Theater in his home town of Santa Barbara on the night before his 87th birthday. The nearly sold out audience was enthralled (as was I). When I saw him there on his birthday 2 years ago he never sat down. Now he often sits when he's not playing. Saw Don Was there and asked if they had recorded the concert. He replied that Charles records all his concerts. It was all very contemplative with (IIRC) no up-tempo songs but I was shocked when they took their first (pre-encore) bows. I thought they been playing about 25 minutes. Turns out it was more than an hour. I guess I was mesmerized as were most of the audience. Two encores later they'd played about 90 minutes without leaving the stage. T
  16. Yes but meanwhile this is third person (all good contributors) I know of who has left the board because of something you said. You, obviously, are knowledgeable, helpful and valuable to this board but not all opinions need to be said forcefully.
  17. IIRC (and I often don't) BOC was supposed to do some music for the film "Heavy Metal" and though the deal fell through ,they released some songs that mention characters in the movie. (Sorry to be so vague but, though I was involved in the film and the soundtrack, I didn't know much about heavy metal music so left that to others. I did meet Bruce Lundvall who was representing Columbia records, so he and I talked about jazz while others dealt with the rock. I remember showing rough cuts of the film to Ronnie Dio and Don Felder but had no idea who they were. )
  18. Well the cd has now arrived. I was wrong (I'm often wrong): there are extensive notes in the booklet. However I think all the important information regarding these performances is on-line, though the booklet contains much more about Powell's life and career.
  19. Damn good movie.
  20. His 3 books are easily the best bio of Pops-- including the supposed autobiography. There is some repetition from book to book but I expect that someday the 3 will be combined, edited, and updated into the authoritative biography. BTW This should lead you to the playlists as well as some commentary on the music: https://www.facebook.com/dippermouth/posts/pfbid02H1hHdhscWRMqZmX77ejLKG3J1JWNPbkV4FBSp2Rw6eFWvAZUAMPU38mZr44jqULal?rdid=QeQ6nlJmq6JaWiWH#
  21. Ricky has now put up a chronological Spotify playlist of all the recordings mentioned in the book. A great idea.
