  1. I'm really confused. (As I often am.) Is the '97 release the Legacy release? And I never thought of the alternative take of Flamenco Sketches as opening with Peace Piece but as referencing Some Other Time (which morphed into Peace Piece on Riverside). IIRC Evans even quotes Some Other Time in his solo on the alternate take of Flamenco Sketches.
  2. Do SACDs play on DVD players? What about Blu Ray players?
  3. Should be easy to distinguish Manchester from London: Listen for someone calling out "Judas!" just before they play Like a Rolling Stone "fucking loud".
  4. One of the streaming services-- I think it's Pandora-- has a "Bill Evans Channel". Plays a lot of Bill but other piano players as well. I've heard it a couple of times at the houses of different friends none of whom are huge jazz fans.
  5. Yup. Cost me $26.55 including shipping.
  6. I've always presumed that Fresh Air was taped. One of my favorite moments on the show was when Gross asked Kieth Jarrett about charges that his music betrayed his African American Heritage and he (to my surprise) answered that he was Caucasian. I admire her for leaving in the exchange. BTW He pointed out that people might have thought he was Black because of his hair.
  7. Only time I saw Santana perform he was wearing a Coltrane T-shirt.
  8. Wasn't Mosaic partially owned by Capital? Does Universal Music now own a piece of it? And who owns Universal Music? I downloaded the Dexter then bought a booklet from Mosaic.
  9. I think they were called The Capital Vault Series and were all owned by Capital/Emi. Wow I just looked them up. There are 16 of them and they include some larger boxes. Prices are all over the place. $11.99 for the Dexter Select, $89.99 for the Bobby Hackett.
  10. EMI/Capital put out several Mosaic Selects on iTunes without identifying them as such. (IIRC they also gave each collection a title different than the one Mosaic used.)
  11. IIRC Mingus Ah Um has the earliest recordings of Better Git Hit in Your Soul, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and Fables of Faubus, three compositions he continued to play for the rest of his life. (And there's also Boogie Stop Shuffle.)
  12. I've read that the whistling after Trane's solos was a sign of disapproval. Anyone here know if that's true? BTW I think that Wynton Kelly really steps it up in response to Trane.
  13. I've read that the whistling after Trane's solos was a sign of disapproval. Anyone here know if that's true?
  14. Sonny Greenwich?! I didn't know that. Which records?
  15. That offer seems to have disappeared and even if you pay the full Amazon price they're not shipping for 8-11 days. ( Fortunately I have all these plus all or most of the other concerts from the tour on pretty good sounding cds. )
  16. I haven't gotten a shipping notice (or rather I haven't noticed a notice) but I notice that my credit card has been charged.
  17. I'd forgotten about that. Now, of course, I can't remember where it is. I did get thanked by Charles and his wife when I ran into them on the beach once.
  18. Let's not forget his community work with The World Stage in Los Angeles. What does it say about the country that a man who gave so much (and appeared on so many records) needed financial help when he became sick near the end of his life? Charles Lloyd and his wife took care of him and organized a fund to help him out. The first time I saw Charles perform in Santa Barbara he dedicated his concert to Billy Higgins.
  19. I was at Amoeba Hollywood last night. Smells of death. Place was empty compared to a few years ago. CDs were cheaper than ever and they hardly offer anything for trade-ins. People just don't want atoms anymore when bites are readily available. I remember an article from just a few years ago saying that though cds were dying, places like Amoeba which sold them second hand were doing just fine. I think that's no longer true.
  20. Wow. I love that song. Never knew there were so many jazz versions. Of course I first heard it on Miles Ahead. They use an Oscar Peterson/Nelson Riddle version of it as score in The Phantom Thread.
  21. Friend of mine produces it. I'm seeing her tomorrow. If you don't mind I'll show this to her.
  22. https://thebluemoment.com/ has a great summary of Buell's contributions to all sorts of music.
  23. Yes, I remember when they starting using sound scan to determine record sales and discovered that Garth Brooks (whom I'd never heard of) was the top selling artist in America. Before that they just phoned record stores and asked them what was selling. (Which I think is the method the NY Times still uses for books, and it's selected stores at that.)
  24. IIRC he played in symphony orchestras too. I don't think he ever thought he was compromising. He was a professional musician.
  25. Co-incidentally I notice that there is an ad in there for a Billy Taylor MFL Lp.
