  1. I've read that the whistling after Trane's solos was a sign of disapproval. Anyone here know if that's true?
  2. Sonny Greenwich?! I didn't know that. Which records?
  3. That offer seems to have disappeared and even if you pay the full Amazon price they're not shipping for 8-11 days. ( Fortunately I have all these plus all or most of the other concerts from the tour on pretty good sounding cds. )
  4. I haven't gotten a shipping notice (or rather I haven't noticed a notice) but I notice that my credit card has been charged.
  5. I'd forgotten about that. Now, of course, I can't remember where it is. I did get thanked by Charles and his wife when I ran into them on the beach once.
  6. Let's not forget his community work with The World Stage in Los Angeles. What does it say about the country that a man who gave so much (and appeared on so many records) needed financial help when he became sick near the end of his life? Charles Lloyd and his wife took care of him and organized a fund to help him out. The first time I saw Charles perform in Santa Barbara he dedicated his concert to Billy Higgins.
  7. I was at Amoeba Hollywood last night. Smells of death. Place was empty compared to a few years ago. CDs were cheaper than ever and they hardly offer anything for trade-ins. People just don't want atoms anymore when bites are readily available. I remember an article from just a few years ago saying that though cds were dying, places like Amoeba which sold them second hand were doing just fine. I think that's no longer true.
  8. Wow. I love that song. Never knew there were so many jazz versions. Of course I first heard it on Miles Ahead. They use an Oscar Peterson/Nelson Riddle version of it as score in The Phantom Thread.
  9. Friend of mine produces it. I'm seeing her tomorrow. If you don't mind I'll show this to her.
  10. https://thebluemoment.com/ has a great summary of Buell's contributions to all sorts of music.
  11. Yes, I remember when they starting using sound scan to determine record sales and discovered that Garth Brooks (whom I'd never heard of) was the top selling artist in America. Before that they just phoned record stores and asked them what was selling. (Which I think is the method the NY Times still uses for books, and it's selected stores at that.)
  12. IIRC he played in symphony orchestras too. I don't think he ever thought he was compromising. He was a professional musician.
  13. Co-incidentally I notice that there is an ad in there for a Billy Taylor MFL Lp.
  14. Wow I'm shocked that the Shelly Mann led date didn't chart. It was ubiquitous when I was in college and IIRC Leroy Vinneger sued when he heard Previn was getting royalties and he wasn't.
  15. I met him because he played on the scores of some films I helped produce. (Harold Ramis was a friend of his and would alway recommend him.) Bought my Mosaic set directly from him. (Got it autographed too.)
  16. They showed film of this (and other photos/films from Lloyd's history) on the walls of the concert hall tonight. Booker T played second half of show on B3 while Gerald Clayton sat out. Don Was sat in on acoustic base for a couple of numbers. And yes, they did play Green Onions. Clayton returned on piano and played Happy Birthday. The audience very quickly joined in.
  17. Going to a birthday concert tonight. (One of his guest artists is Booker T!)
  18. Has this actually ever been mentioned by anyone at Mosaic?
  19. I got 10/10!. Honest. But I was guessing for about 4 of them. And a couple weren't even educated guesses.
  20. Not only did they record Ellington at 331/3 but they (perhaps by accident) recorded him in stereo. Steven Lasker discovered that they used 2 microphones from which they did separate pressings. He was able to sync them up and do a stereo release of Duke Ellington recorded in 1932. I'm not sure if they did all their 33 1/3 recordings with 2 mikes nor whether they had stereo in mind.
  21. Thanks. I should have spent some time Googling but I thought someone might know it off the top of their head (as the saying goes). I remember that you could often get Lps broken up into Ep sets. I got Fats Domino that way.
  22. This discussion convinced me to download the record (I think it may be the only officially released Mingus record I didn't have. After one listen I really like it-- mainly because it's a great Don Pullen record.
  23. So for a while these 45 box sets were not available on 10 or 12 inch Lps? And were the first Lps all 10 inch? When did the 12 inch ones appear?
  24. What full opera are we talking about here? If it's Einstein on the Beach it's available from Amazon and for some reason it's cheaper on Blu Ray than DVD. I just ordered it because everyone I know who saw it live was knocked out by it. BTW If you're interested in what he can do with music that's far from minimalism, listen to his score for the film The Secret Agent.
  25. Just dug it up and looked at the notes. Six of the cuts are "previously unissued masters"-- which I guess means, alternate takes. However there's no suggestion that the originally released cuts were edited. The alternates are fairly close to the same length as the originals.
