I'd get a $99 VCR and a $99 DVD. Keep them seperate. I bought my DVD player at Blockbuster for $89 and it's worked great. At the prices you are looking at do not sweat it. In wall speakers are an option or get small speakers with wall brackets. This could work nicely in your small room, and leave room for a subwoofer. You would run wire under carpet or in the wall or behind molding.

Sorry to here of his passing. I must have 30 LP's he played on or lead. "Some Like It Hot" is my favorite as leader. His playing on the later Billie Holiday Verve sides is great, also.

Nice review. I've always read good things about these. I think Stax has a battery powered in-ear model now. Never felt like I would like these do to the in-ear feeling. Maybe, you get used to it. You are right about having your ears flushed once a year. I usually wait until I fall over.

Most people go with a tube pre-amp and a SS amp, but there is no reason not to try the other way. What tube gear is available in your area? Small room? Tukans efficiency rating?
-
Hill-Black Fire Seems like it was going for a third of this a short time ago. I guess I'll be keeping my Liberty pressing.

I've got Two Bones/ Fuller and Blue Pearl/Bud Powell(45 RPM). I've always wondered if there were more 45RPM singles done. The insert does not mention any. Only seen 2 or 3 of the others...rare birds.

For the long drive stuff like St. Helens and Mt. Ranier ( Cascade Loop drive is another scenic drive that lets you see more of the incredible NW) you might want to take a tour bus from your hotel. More comfortable and you will not get lost. A winery tour is nice also. The train (Washington Dinner Train) leaves from Renton(near Hendrix's cemetary) and goes to a winery. Nice little 3 to 4 hour trip.

St. Helens will be a long, full day day on the road. Mt. Ranier is amazing, also. Traffic could be a killer. Snoqualamie Falls is another option, and close in. Man, has Seattle grown. I'm always giving directions to Hendix's grave site in nearby Renton. You'll be downtown so maybe a decent dinner/show at Jazz Alley would be good. Minors were fine last time I checked. The bus is great for around downtown and nearby areas. I'm sure you will take Monorail to Seattle Center and Space Needle and Paul Allen's Experience Music Project. Bumbershoot Music Festval would be a must see if you were coming in early Sept. Do you fish? Be pretty cool to go home home with some salmon you caught. You've got to stop in and say hi to Bud at Bud's Jazz Record store. A quick bus ride to Pioneer Square from your hotel. The Mariners are down there, too. Pricey, but you'll never forget how cool the ballpark is. My kid is always going to shows. I'll ask him if there is anyone playing that might interest your son.

Quote from item description of an LP this guy is selling; ...record has a lot of surface scratches that have been smoothed over with a buffer..... E-bay, always good for a laugh.

AOW, Apr 26- May 2 Horace Silver, Doin' the Thing
wolff replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Album Of The Week
I've had this LP for a long time, and play it quite a bit. I bought it at the rare garage sale (at the beginning of the digital age) where owner was selling off his jazz collection. I play it because of the up-tempo tunes and the live energy that comes across quite well. As others have mentioned Mitchell cooks. When I want to hear Blue Mitchell I grab one of his Silver LP's not the one's he led. That's just me. There are some very nice solos by all involved. I really like Cook's solo on "Kiss Me Right". -
Don't most CD players have outputs so you can add on a DAC at a later time. Build up a friendship with your dealer so he'll let you home audition their demo pieces over the weekend. That way you will be better able to tell how different pieces sound in your sysytem. It's a real good way to go. Also, see if there are any high-end dealers with a used equipment in your area.

I bought "All Night Long" byJunior Kimbrough on Fat Possum Records and it's pretty good. Any others that might be worth a listen?
-
Will the speakers be good for your room?? Ask your dealer and see if he can find out how others are setting theirs up, etc.. Maybe, you can e-mail Zingali. Most speakers need some room to breath. Some like to be well into room. When I get mine closer than 18 inches from wall they get boomy. Many like being 2-3 feet from rear and side walls(makes reflections less of a problem). In your room you will not have much room to play around. There is usually a small area where speaker sounds it's best . Seems like the deeper a speaker goes the more critical placement is. I've also heard speakers with fairly deep bass sound fine in a room about your size.
-
WTF are you talking about? Do you hit the mono switch when you listen to RCA shaded dogs and Mercury Living Presence and Decca stereo's??? LMAO Basses are back right. A properly recorded and played back classical stereo recording will place the instruments in their proper locations between and around your speakers with accurate layering(depth). Nothing quasi about it.

I've only heard the larger B&W's with solid state gear. I'd guess they would do fine with 100 wpc tube amp...just guessing. Their impedance drops pretty low which is usually not good for most tube amps. Yes, it would be good to get feedback from other owners of the speaker. Quite a few people want/wanted to hear my speakers, so I had them over for a listen and it really helped them decide. I'd never heard of Zingalis until now. I see Wellborne Labs lists them as tube friendly. A good sign. Did you listen to the other smaller models? I'm assuming you feel the 4 will fit your room ok and it's more efficient than smaller models. Sounds like you were very impressed with the sound of combo you listened to, as well you should be for the $$$. Use it as a reference point if you have the patience to look around some more. My guess is you will keep coming back to SET sound if you like it already. The emotion and feeling of music sure come through with that type of amp. If that's the sound that you really like, different SET 300B amps is one avenue to try, but your speaker choices will be limited. 8wpc I have some 96db speakers that I got with the intention of using with a 300b amp, but have not gotten around to it.
-
Beautiful speakers. Love that craftsmanship!! Italian? There goes your budget.
-
Sounds pretty good. That single ended 300B sound is very seductive. I need to get a SE 300B amp at some point. If the phono adds around 1K or more to price and you do not listen to vinyl much you might look into getting it sans phono and buying a cheaper outboard, stand alone phono stage. But, if you are planning on playing a lot of vinyl and maybe upgrading your vinyl playback, keep it. Do have a link to the speakers?

I had Naim 62/140 for a few years. Bought it used and sold it for what I paid for it. It broke once and dealer gave me another one to use until it was repaired...no charge for repairs. When I wanted to upgrade I started finding better stuff(IMO) for less money. Does the Nait have enough juice to drive the Tukans? If you had more efficient speakers I'd say try a little Audio Note. Other than that it should be great for a small system.

Nice stuff you've been looking at. Wait until you see/hear the nice tube stuff. If you did not like Levinson compared to Meridian you should definitely give tube stuff a listen. See if you can listen to some Conrad Johnson gear. I have one old piece and a friend has some of their newer higher priced spread. Never fails to get the music across. Great company with great customer service.

I can't say anything. Like a dumbass, not long ago I bid on an LP set that was still in print. Thad Jones or Parlan, I think. My max bid was about $20 over what it sold for. I realized this oversight before auction ended. Luckily, it ended up about $10 less than my max and it was stone mint. Someone got a nice deal on a Hill LP set a few days ago..$114. Asleep at the wheel again.

Oh well, no "Out To Lunch". I wonder how many pieces they sell per title???
-
I'd stay away from low powered amps until...........you've heard them with your speakers or buy some new ones that are more sensitive then ones you have. Any amp can be used for bi-wiring. You just buy bi-wired speaker cables. Do search at Audiongon for 'tube integrated'. Here's a nice one available from vendor in my area that I'd recommend. LINK You will not be needing digital inputs. Your cd player will outbut analog signal to your integrated amp. Jolida and ASL gear is good. Most of us have gone through a few pieces of gear before we settled on something long term. You may have to do the same unless you can audition lots of gear. The Teac Esoteric DV-50 looks great , but is it overkill for your budget and intended use? If I had it I would match it with very, very good componetnts.

Check out Classic Records. They've done SE in 33 and 45rpm on vinyl. Hopefully, they will get around to OTL in a year or two.

An honest apparaisal of Mosaic sets
wolff replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This sounds interesting. PM me with some Blue Note titles you have CD's of and I'll send you some nice burns form my vinyl. Since when did half you guys become audiophiles. Talking about sound, mastering, higher resolution formats. Comparing formats. LMAO It seems like every thread about a re-issue talks about the sound quality. I used to wonder when/if CD collecting would become like vinyl collecting. My question has been answered. CS500 might like burns from Mosaic vinyl sets. I have a dozen and only the Tina Brooks is below average. I own a few BN titles on vinyl. I've never really been impressed with RVG's work, except in one area. Soundwise I much prefer jazz titles from RCA, Contemporary and other labels.
