I got my copy of Groovadelphia!
Clunky replied to Dan Gould's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I got mine a few days ago. Most rounded of the three albums. Love the title track, second track and Arno's tune especially. Harmonica bites man indeed !! -
It's good enough, not top drawer Costa but well worth hearing but don't lose sleep over this one...

What's sad is that she has apparently chosen to deliberately alter her look, to become less "human" looking. So I don't know if "butchered" is quite the right word - it wasn't a plastic surgery gone wrong. Otherwise I agree with you. I don't think butchered is the right word either, though you can certainly question the professional ethics of a plastic surgeon who agrees to attempt to make a client more "feline". Seems to me anyone in the profession should be obligated not to perform surgery but to refer the patient to a competent therapist. I agree with Dan here. The surgeons involved should have backed off and referred her for CBT or similar. Very sad. Also I'd say , lay off Madonna's daughter , not kind, unfair and unworthy of this forum.

I agree Oxfam should IMO be more careful, their generally non expert staff price by the book and take too little regard of the condition of the LPs. Countless times I've seen way over priced LPs in relatively poor condition. It's a real pity as this does them nor their customers or indeed their donors any favours. Having said that I have bought plenty LPs from them in excellent condition.

shipping is likely to be around £8 I would guess , then import tax/ DHL handling fee etc could add another £15 ( based on my experience with big mosaic orders) easily making it hardly any cheaper.

Good man. I think mine is 'in the mail'. Let us know what you think. Bear in mind that this is the only Music Matters LP I have ever heard. My local HiFi shop from which I've sourced all my gear over the last 4 years had a vinyl day today. Diverse vinyl came up with a shed load of new vinyl. The MM sets are very dear at £47.50 each. I chose Bluesnik cos it's a really great session and I only have it on a McMaster 80s CD. The sound , package is realy excellent but I'm still doubtful I'd buy more of these given the extreme cost. I also picked up Somethin Else and Cool and Struttin in recent Japanese issues (TOJJ 6501 & 6502). These were £29 and sound no better or worse than the MM set. All are a little quieter than Classics reissues I've got of BN material (only 4 so far). So I'm still fence sitting re the MM sets, if they can be had cheaper I might bite. Pity True Blue don't sell them with their "useful" attitude to customs valuation. These TOJJ sets are billed as 100th Anniversary of Alfred Lion and claim RVG mastering (hopefully not digital !!). Very impressed with these 180gm issues, altogether rather more practical than 45rpm.

MOMOFUKU- Elvis Costello and the Imposters- Lost Highway 2LP very good set reminds me of Blood and Chocolate , I'd rather lost track of his output since Spike but on this evidence he's as strong as he's ever been. Recommended. Next up Bluesnik J Maclean- 2LP 45 rpm set- I want to hear what all the fuss is about...

any one else have any thoughts re these recent Japanese vinyls, ? is there a list any where?

Mosaic sale: 15% off selected sets until July 31
Clunky replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Listened to Gravy Train and that's pretty much confirmed that I can live without the Donaldson. Gravy Train is ultra lame. -
Another :tup for this record, spinning it again last night, quirky and original in a good way.

Today received Henri Texier Respect Label Bleu- nice date with Konitz/ Brookmeyer/ Motian/ Swallow- some line up !!!

I've got "The Magic City" in this series, it's a Scorpio product. In fact once I finished checking most of the new vinyl I've bought in the last three years ( about 20 titles) are Scorpios, none sound great. All are passable IMO but then again I've got nothing to compare to. Scorpio resissues seem to cover Blue Note, Prestige, Time, Saturn, Inner City, Vortex , quite a range, no idea if they're all mastered from DAT but I'm avoiding them now.

Al Cooper's Savoy Sultans- Jumpin at the Savoy Ace of Hearts (Decca UK) some out of tune playing here, a solid 2 star record. Next up ... Coleman Hawkins - Dutch Treat (1936-38) Xanadu. Some very good and obscure Dutch sessions from the father of the tenor sax. No cross over with The Hawk In Holland - GNP Crescendo GNP-9003, nor with Hawk tracks on the excellent collection of broadcasts/private recordings Americans in Holland- The Great Thirties- Timeless Historical

I'm very fond of this session, it lead me to Herbie Nichols ( Ra's piano was compared to Nichols' in a review of this disc in The Wire). Nichols lead me to my first Mosaic in 1992 which lead to much financial insecurity but lots of pleasure.
-
Lee Wiley and Friends-The Songs of Rodgers and Hart Jazztone LP DG too !! Wiley on side 1 and a few tracks on side 2. Nice supporting cast including Ruby Braff, Jo Jones, Jimmy Jones

AOTW July 6-12 2008 ANY Freddie Roach Blue Note Album
Clunky replied to Soul Stream's topic in Album Of The Week
Sadly I'm missing Brown Sugar, recently I picked up NYC editions of "All that's good" and "Mo greens" both of which I prefer to Good Move. IIRC half of the tracks on Good are excellent where as the others struck me as ok but nothing special. All that's good" is superb. very different form your average grease session. -
Blue Mitchell- Smooth as the wind Interdisc UK

Like wise, I wasn't into the pre-war Mosaics when it went OOP but I've since realised just how much fabulous and timeless music was produced in the pre-LP era. Mustn't let the Basie/Lester slip by.....
-
Just received a mint copy of Open Air Suit- very fine indeed, great sound too, right up there with Air Time . Any comments on the Live at Montreux Suisse date ?
-
The early Basie Verve sides are a case in point. The audio quality of the original (albeit UK issue) LPs I have of this material sound very poor against the excellent sound in the Mosaic set. A good example of CD superiority over LP !!!
-
How do you do it? :rsmile: I nearly failed to spot it, I was just leaving with a couple of EKE LPs ( The Works Vol 14 and Vol 1 1946/7 Hindsight/London) when I saw it. I was pretty pleased. Sound is v good and it's nice that it sorts out the discographical confusion of the Sony 2CD set that came out a few years ago.

Well done Spain, deserving winners tonight.....Italy were too dull, not exactly a great match but a just result.

Woody Herman Complete Columbia Mosaic 7 CD set- £25 , only discs 1 and 2 not sealed, otherwise mint.
-
Great move. All three About Time LPs are superb IMO, joyous swinging music, highly recommended, nice to see that at least 2 are available on CD. Great sound on the LPs though.
