Going back to my earlier post regarding the lack of end note numbers in the essay I wrote for the new Uptown CD, I neglected to take at least partial responsibility for what happened. To make a long story short, in retrospect, my submission was not formatted ideally for a CD booklet. I wouldn't worry , as a huge LT fan I found it a most interesting essay. There seems to be very little written about Lucky and what there is seems mainly to add little to the, talented but difficult character who played with everyone especially Martial Solal then withdrew from the scene altogether, repeated in most of the potted bios I've seen on Thompson.

I quite like this one but would admit that I rarely play it all the way through Keith Tippett and Andy Shepphard- 66 Shades of Lipstick -

L'Art du Son is also much cheaper than RRL

Jazz Review - UK magazine
Clunky replied to Clunky's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I find in Jazzwise there are too many articles that appear to be little more than promo slots for new releases with little in the way of critical evaluation of what's on offer. The reviews are also too brief. -
Sign of the times I guess but Jazz Review the UK magazine so long edited by Richard Cook has been incorporated by Jazz Journal Publishing ( which AFAIK just stopped publishing it's own Jazz Journal). All this according to the mailing I just received explaining the changes in ownership and title of the magazine. It's not really been the same since Richard Cook passed with some issues being light in content. The omission of a review of jazz CDs from 2008 in the Dec/Jan issue just past struck me as bizarre for a music magazine. I used to look forward to its arrival so hopefully the new title under Mark Gilbert's stewardship will come good again. Presumably the combined readership of both the "Jazz Journal" and "Jazz Review" will allow it keep afloat and offer an alternative to the rather glossy superficiality of Jazzwise.

I'm happy with "L'art du Son", dirtier records just need more applications to get them clean. Also it doesn't irritate by skin. I've also used it successfully to clean very grubby 78s with no evidence of harm (yet) and massive improvements in surface noise.

UK Vogue releases I have cover material from Pacific Jazz Blue note Contemporary Esoteric Fantasy Roulette generally nice quiet pressings, on 7 inch, 10 inch and 12inch. Covers always much flimsier than their US counterparts , but usually with quite a nice glossy laminated finish.

Happy Birthday Flurin, hope you have a great day

Both discs sound excellent if very different. I've played "No now is so" all the way thru but I'm still listening to "Convergence". The interesting line up of instruments on "No..." doesn't disappoint. Both benefit from being played loud.

Looking forward to get these two and hearing some new sounds.

where did the animated covers go...... Couw come back

Approaching Petrella's Blue Note Indigo4 CDs in reverse I order I recently got.... Kaleido from 2007. I'm sure it was recommended by someone here but I can't remember who or where. I've order his earlier BN effort and will hopefully get it shortly. Good to see the Italian arm of BN still releasing challenging new releases.

The only Atomic sides I've come across have been well worn, not sure how good these were in first place

Today I got a small number of R&B titles and a few jazz sides by the likes of Ruth Brown (Atlantic) , Ivory Joe Hunter (King), Jazz Gillum (RCA), Cousin Joe (Savoy) all in near mint condition and sounding very nice. Fascinating slice of American music, these 40s indie labels did great work. Oh the jazz sides were a Hank D'Amico (National) - one side chamber jazz the the other a basic blues vocal and a lovely Fletcher Henderson/ Louis Armstrong side ( a 40's Decca reissue- very quiet for a 78 ).

Got my copy yesterday. I'm a real LT nut and have a large number of his sessions as leader and sideman. This release is a real treat. I wonder who we would have to pressurize to see the NDR Jazz workshop sessions released ( a worthy Mosaic !!!)

I recently got an old Lenco GL75- it had no arm so had a second-hand Linn Basik Plus LVX added, total cost was £195 plus a Ortofon OM5E and additional OM78 stylus. The Lenco is infinitely adjustable between 16rpm and 83 rpm if needed. The interchangeable stylii allow me to play 78s and LPs/singles. I have a huge pile of fairly batter 45s which are not in good enough condition to put anywhere near my more expensive Den DL103 R cartridge on my P3, so these get played on the Lenco too. Lenco's are available fairly cheaply and there is a wealth of information regarding how to upgrade them (I've not bothered)

I'm waiting on this , how's the sound quality ?
-
I've enjoyed all of the these guys , from the list Brubeck and Braxton would be the ones I've had most difficulty getting into. In Brubeck's case I'm not going to push further, I've a handful of sessions which is enough but Braxton is worth more investigation, so I await the Mosaic to be delivered with the Armstrong set for a double dose in Mid -late April

New Freddie Hubbard coming out on Blue Note
Clunky replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
I'll be up for this release for sure, but what is overpress ? -
Next up on my newly refurbished 40 yr old Lenco Red Norvo- Congo Blues/ Get happy Comet, a bit of distortion on the first side but way better sound overall compared to the Dial CD of the same material

Dizzy Gillespie Groovin High Manor, mint condition for £ 2.50, great presense and depth, certainly better than the Musicraft CD of the same material. More Gillespie, HMV UK issues from 1948 of his early Victor sides, including Night in Tunisia and 52nd Street theme, very quiet surfaces, lovely historical artefacts even if they don't improve on the sound of the Bluebird 2CD issue of this material.
