  1. This is such tragic news. EST were great value, I saw them 3 or 4 times from the very small venue of Henry's to larger auditoria in more recent years, always spell binding performances. I drifted away from getting all of their releases instantly, a few years ago but was brought sharply to my senses by their Live in Hamburg release released 2007. I had fully intended seeing them again this summer in a double bill with local heroes Trio AAB , so I would guess that make me a fan. I think their influence is pretty wide on the likes of Neil Cowley Trio. Whether EST would have aged well with time is another matter, I suspect there was danger in their music becoming a bit repetitive and near pop like. We'll now never know. RIP
  2. Earlier Al Cariola- Everything happens to me ( Realm) - UK 1963 issue of Savoy session - Deep in a dream. Early smooth jazz but with Hank Jones and Kenny Clarke providing some colour to a dreamily paced session. 2 stars only. Now Art Ensemble of Chicago- Urban Bushman (ECM)- a good one for sure.
  3. The cover looks great, distinctive.......... and a brave choice with no pic of the band smiling to lure in prospective purchasers.
  4. Duhhhhhh.... just bought Road Time and Tales of a Courtesian , should have waited.....
  5. John - this one is great. I think you will like it ! Hmmmm.....I don't find the sound clips too compelling, are they representative ?
  6. Barre Phillips/Dave Holland - Music from two basses ECM 1011, unusual session, I can't tell who's who here, ....so shoot me.... wonder if ECM will ever return to the experimentalism of its early years.
  7. Don Patterson Goin' down home Cadet ( Stereo)- one groovy little record. next up Frederick Roach- All that's good BN NY Stereo. Far out as good as Now and Lift Every Voice. Good subject for a Mosaic Select BN sessions with vocal groups.
  8. Blow your horn with Benny Green (sic) & Paul Quinichette Brunswick ( heavy slab of 1950s UK vinyl). Surprisingly good group of separate sessions by the two leaders from 1953/4. Marlowe Morris on Hammond on the Vice-Prez tracks is nice and discreet.
  9. I'm a big fan of McHenry's. Great player , great tone and luckily good ideas, great to see live (seen him on a handful of occasions). Didn't know of this disc but I will do shortly
  10. Happy Birthday Chuck :excited:
  11. Very nice disc, had it a week now, musical tourism of the jazz variety which works very nicely. Somehow reminds me of "The Black Saint and the sinner lady". Chicken or Beef title track is very strange perhaps it's a message I'm missing but I'm not sure it fits, but who am I ...,,,,,......
  12. Like that one, right now Jimmy and Doug Raney Duets Steeplechase
  13. I know I'm kinda late to the party here with respect to Bessie. I hadn't paid her any attention until I recently got the Mosaic Lang/Venuti set which has three nice Bessie tracks. Yesterday I was lucky enough to pick up Vols. 2 and 4 of Christiern's CBS 2LPs (very cheaply) Both unplayed sets on the Avan-Guard label ( Australian licensee?) on ultra flimsy vinyl but boy what fabulous music , hooked totally . These transfers sound pretty good to my ears but what a voice. As I say I'm late but I'm listening. Guess I'll go for the Frogs as that appears to be the received way rather than fill in the LP sets.
  14. International treasure..., you can't keep mr. mubbles all to yourselves. Get well, just happened to be spinning his Candid LP last night , great album..
  15. The Ace LPs are pretty much from the fag-end of the LP era, flimsy vinyl with light card covers , many seem to indicate that they're from digital masters. The few I have however , sound fine. Mose Allison Sings sounds as good as a Prestige original I have. RCA UK produced Prestige 2fers ( Black Pearl, Cookin/Relaxin and many others sound great to me, no complaints here. 60s budget UK labels such as Egmont, Society are often poor where as WRC aren't bad and in many cases excellent IMO
  16. Hard to tell with reissues. Basically you should buy only pre 1980 pressings. I think that in used vinyl market you should go for what you find, not for what you want: there are lots of great used records under 20 $. I mean that if you look for original BN or Prestige they will rip you off. Overseas we go for german and dutch reissues of the Big Guns, cheap and excellent pressings. Just a shout here for UK issues and reissues, I've yet to be disappointed by UK pressings from 60s through to mid 80s. Some labels such as Transatlantic (for Prestige material), Fontana (ESP), are excellent. I've noticed that 80s Steeplechase vinyl is a bit spotty, nothing terrible but not the quietest. All OJC vinyl seems to fine, mine go upto 1992 I think and irrespective of master source (digi or analog) all sound very good, nice quiet pressings. I avoid almost all BN vinyl reissues from the 80s (DMM- French) as distortion often a problem. I'm happy with my McMaster Cds on the whole. Just a few random thoughts that guide by vinyl buying.
  17. Just arrived and now spinning Big John Patton - Understanding- BN Liberty (stereo) in stone mint condition, wow what a session !!!!
  18. Jimmy and Doug Raney -Duets- Steeplechase (1980) lovely mellow session, vinyl looks prestine but has some crackle like most of my Steeplechases.
  19. I only spun discs 1 & 2 so far and really have enjoyed them. Slowly over the years my dislike in vocal jazz has diminished, i dig the vocals when they're done well even if the lyrics are nonsense
  20. How's George ?
  21. Bought the CD and received it on saturday. Powerful session, some of it thunderous but all very fine, good date, recommended.
  22. my copy of this disc does the same thing, returned it three times to shop before giving up, works ok on some cd players but not others, IIRC it's only some extra takes that are affected so I could live with it.
  23. I was really sorry to hear of Humph's passing. It seemed he'd go on forever. Saw him just a few times , great performer with very good ear and appreciation for a wide variety of jazz forms. Great radio performer too. He was always witting , warm and articulate. RIP Humph, you'll be greatly missed.
  24. Prima/Manone set (no.1735) arrived today, ( clearly not a great seller) Disc 1 - great sound quality here and pretty swinging so far. Heather not alight yet but I had just been grooving to Monorails and Satellites so it's a bit of a stylistic jump.
  25. any update ?
