  1. From those suggested , the following would appeal most to me Andrew Hill- Change Jackie McLean- High Frequency Chico Hamilton- PJ Trio also what about Duke Jordans "Flight to Jordan"- perhaps more likely to be an RVG
  2. The Halfway House material is pretty good. I've got some of on LP and whilst it's perhaps not edge-of-your-seat it's a good New Orleans band
  3. Good set, the Dizzy In South America CDs ( Of which I only have Volume 1) complements it nicely
  4. Jimmy Smith- Crazy Baby- (NY- Mono)-
  5. Anyone heard those sessions - did he sound like Bird? The McShann broadcast from 1943 is on one side of a French RCA Lp I picked up the other day ( the otherside has McShann/Parker octets) I can see why the alto playing of Jackson was attributed to Parker, surely no one else that early had captured that much of Parkers sound. Some nice sides in surprisingly good sound given the sources. Side one has Parker/MCShann sessions ( 1940/1) caught on the hoof in adequate sound with early glimpses of Parker's genius.
  6. well I guess Mosaics will come as enemas in that case.
  7. I'm also interested in the Lang/Venuti , I'm considering it of the Bix/Teagarden set. I dont have much from either set. I'm inclining to the Lang/Venuti as Bix is always likely to get his due in terms on releases but Lang is much less heralded. On the other hand I suspect the peaks of the Bix set may well eclipse the best of the Lang/Venuti. The filler material (of pop material and blues on the Lang/Venuti might be more interestin than the equivalent filler on the Bix set. What say you,any thoughts?
  8. 1987 Kind Of Blue - 3rd jazz CD/LP I bought. Bought it because I'd heard Cannonball Adderley on the Radio (JRR- Peter Clayton) and when I'd tracked some Adderley down had loved In San Francisco and Somethin Else (both Japanese imports). Rebought KOB with the Sony Legacy upgrade ( one of the few sonic upgrades I've bother with or thought was worthwhile)
  9. I thought they didn't ship to the UK ?
  10. true, 10% aint much but it's just a little nudge in the right direction. On the Stitt set it amounts to about £8, roughly the price of bottle of reasonable wine.
  11. Any particular recommendations, I see he has a few releases.? The only thing I've got is a duo date with Haden on Naim. Quite melancholic if I remember.
  12. It's Stitt or never for me this month. Time to get off the fence.
  13. Last night at the Edinburgh Jazz festival Giovanni Falzone- talented Sicilian trumpet player- Sicilain folk tunes and originals played by a quartet of trumpet, vibes, bass, drums. Lovely typical Italian jazz. Swung like hell, great melodies , lots of humour. Well worth your while Hormigas- Spanish for Ants ( I was told), world class trio of Bill McHenry, Reid Anderson, Jorge Rossy. Wonderful free rolling trio. The standard of writing and playing beggared belief. One of the finest concerts I've evr attended. Hope these guys record. They're all high personable and the atmosphere in the jam packed venue (The Lot, Edinburgh) was electric if a little sweaty.
  14. Whilst I've been on holiday my helpful neighbour has been putting out my green wheelie bin for the refuse collectors. Guess where the DHL man decides to put my delivery from 2001..... you guessed it in the smelly wheelie bin !!!. ....doh...... Luckily it was spotted and all's well. On a less happy note discs 6,8,10 from the Dexter Gordon Prestige set play with great difficulty on my main CD player. All discs look perfect and play ok in other (less fancy) CD players. They will play eventually by repeatedly ejecting the disc. When the player at last recognises a disc as being present it plays it flawlessly. I've noticed a few other CDs have been difficult to play on this CD player but none as tricky as these three. So I have no idea if it's my CD player or the CDs. Any thoughts?
  15. Tone? You mean the sound he makes? MG yeah sound, it's weak and very uncertain , wavering around much of the time, I have to assume it's deliberate
  16. No problem. I think that they nust have been saving them for their new "flagship" store - it is much bigger than any of the others that I've been in. I was in the Cambridge Circus store on Saturday and the only box they had then was one of the live Bill Evans ones. And their Blue Note selection was the same size as it always is. I wouldn't hang around though - they only opened on Wednesday and have sold out of three sets already, although they did have quite a number of the sets that I listed. The Fopps near me have had large numbers of OJCs for £5 for some time. No boxes here in Edinburgh. Mixture of OJC titles loads of Cal Tjader, Brubeck, Tyner and a mother load of those nasty 20 bit digipaks. Some decent stuff if you look. I got some Tjader and was impressed by his talent for the first time- way better than his Verve output that I've heard.
  17. What's on it? Just a load of multiple takes you don't really need. Heh heh. Look Here!! hmm.... oh well .... seeing as I can't order from Concord.......
  18. My first post at the old BNBB regarded the tone achieved by Marvin Cabell on these Patton albums. I still thinks it's pretty off and will probably get flamed this time round too..
  19. is there an on-line listing of what's in the Debut box ? I know it's not just Mingus but what else?
  20. Damn, I have that one too, but it must be misfiled somewhere Mine are always misfiled. I think the most recent CD is in the frequently played pile where as the older one is in a box of digipak CDs- ,,well it's some form of system.
  21. I got a euro version of this in HMV here in UK quite recently, it's Spanish but legit afaik ( not as nasty looking as the Spanish Blue Notes). There were loads of copies knocking around 6 months ago or so. Liners are fairly limited but sound is perfect
  22. Well I bought it too, yesterday. Not my usual cup of tea but I got it along with some OJC s by Willis Jackson, Benny Carter,Sonny Rollins, and Jack McDuff in a minor spree at Fopp. I think it hangs together pretty well, groove music for sure but perfect for those elevator moments. I'd doubt I get more in this vein but not at all bad.
  23. I got six of these from Tom ,arrived yesterday. Very nice indeed, sealed and in perfect condition. Bizarre to think that some of these have been sitting in a box somewhere never played in the last 27 years !!
  24. both sets received. Look great and sound wonderfull, merely scratching the surface so far but really enjoyed the Wilbur Sweatman track "Every body's crazy........" hard to believe it's from 1918 , sounds incredibly fresh.
  25. World champion of yellow and red cards... I think Portugal could have done better, they deserved more Reds and Yellows than they got ,.... ...if only the fifith official got his feet off the desk and checked his VCR like he did for Zidane
