  1. This is a most interesting release. Nicely done , even if disc 1 is not exactly riveting.
  2. About 4 months I sold my dying Sugden integrated amp and replaced it with a Moon 600i. It's the most expensive anything I've bought but the improvement to sound was very significant. I'm very happy with sound I get from all formats even minidisc I thinsk largely because the bits and pieces in my system have been built up slowly over the past 20yrs. I have a very good relationship with my local HiFi dealer. ( Loud and Clear) They don't sell snake oil and I don't buy it.
  3. Def recommended.
  4. So very sad. It was an attack on us all. United we must stand.
  5. I just hated Foxy. Loathe some , not funny, just very irritating. I came to it having really enjoyed a MOPDTK release but Foxy put me right off Irabagon.
  6. Got my copy yesterday. It's been played in the car all yesterday and today . Not ideal for concentrated listening or driving for that matter . It's two sessions really with Shipp solos and band tracks contrasting quite starkly . All the themes are tricky sounding with the whole band tracks having the feeling of Monk's Blue Note dates. It's all quite fascinating and really appeals to me. I've yet to read the liners ( I was driving ) so the curious juxtaposition of the piano solos with the band may make more sense. I'm taken by the alto sax player who sounds exciting and quite original. ? recommended strongly
  7. I hope this set sells well. I've too much of it on vinyl to make any kind of sense getting the Mosaic. The Mance set is pretty trite as I recall and Cobb only slightly better. The rest is damn good . The Reece is excellent even if the mix sounds constipated .
  8. Fantastic set. Desert island material for me. I'm only on early listens but i'm VERY happy with the music on this set. I know i'm late to the party but, damn, better late than never and this is an absolutely brilliant set. There's so much Ellington out there that it can be numbing (as in "Early Ellington? Add it to the pile of the 150 other Ellington albums/sets that i need to check out. Oh, it's very well regarded? Add it to the pile of the 150 other Ellington albums/sets that i need to check out that are very well regarded") but yeah, this set is a real standout. a great set , the transfers are perfect , much more surface noise (than some sets ) which preserves much of the vibrancy of these recordings . An excellent package. I'd love to see authorised releases of Ellington's other early sides on Cameo etc .
  9. possibly even better than very good......I must give it another spin I was pretty much bowled over by this LP.
  10. hmm... I ordered the RRK in the sale, hadn't had any kind of confirmation or shipping email a full seven days later. I emailed Scott directly on my second attempt to get a response, this time with immediate effect. Scott apologised of course for the delay. Mosaic always does the right thing.
  11. I'm completely gutted over Scotland's exit. Few would have thought they could take Australia to the wire but they did. Two crucial decisions went the wrong way. The manner of their loss through poor refereeing makes it all the harder to take. If Scotland can play like this in Six Nations then I will be deliriously happy. For now, just angry and sad.
  12. you need to buy another three to participate in this thread. and buy all the CD versions as well.. I know that......withdraws to corner, head hung in shame......... I'd better join you as I only have one vinyl edition ( NYC mono ?)
  13. I'm still waiting to hear if my copy has been shipped. I appreciate that they are a small concern but they've been exceptionally poor communicators. I paid for my copy over 13 months ago and have only had updates as I've repeatedly chased them up. Now the thing is out I've nothing again.? That is poor indeed. I tend to get prompt replies from the shop manager Mark but maybe that's because I'm usually about to spend money with them It probably doesn't help to know that copies are on display at the venue It arrived today and is a great release up to their usual high standards. Communication needs to improve to say the least. By beef was not the delay but being kept in the dark.
  14. Happy birthday Lee. One of the very very best.

  16. certainly a very different experience hearing seeing Magic Science playing whilst Oedipus a silent film by pianist Ka was screened. Allen played Kora and Casio device , only picking up his alto once the film had finished. It was pretty abstract music which worked very well with the film.Oedipus . The cinematography of Japanese dance filmed in the Swiss Alps was as dramatic as it was unusual. The clip above gives you a good idea. I posted a couple of photos I took at the gig in the Live shows thread.
  17. I saw Grimes last night with Marshall Allen. He looked pretty tired and less than steady on his feet at the end of the concert.
  18. Marshall Allen with Magic Science Quartet , Edinburgh Film House 6th October. Performing sound track to silent film Oedipus by Ka. Henry Grimes (bass) Avreeayl Ra (drum, percussion, various small wind instruments) Ka (piano , shaman drum). Photo taken in available light from the screen. curtain call below.
  19. Jazz in Britain 68/69 --(Decca Eclipse)
  20. Sal Mosca / Peter Ind--------At the Den-------(Wave) 1969 issue of inspired live duo of Mosca and Ind ( rec. 1959) Very nicely recorded with pretty sublime playing from Mosca.
  21. tasty or what....
  22. European Jazz Consensus-----Four for Slavia-------(EMI Electrola GmbH) Skidmore and Dudek responsible for sax duties with drum n bass. Wonder who was responsible for the lame band name? 1977 Hamburg.
  23. Zo-Ko-Ma------(BASF) Pretty sublime offering apart from the electronic sax effects on Konitz's great playing . Sat in the can for 8 yrs before a 1976 release , wonder why?
  24. L'art du son Record cleaning fluid. this comes in a 100ml bottle (£30 from Amazon merchants) . Diluted with distilled or ionised water . The ratio IIRC is around 1 to 50. So this tiny bottle lasts a really long time. Works as well as any thing else I've tried. Also works fine on shellac ( no alcohol)
