  1. The Monk/Trane sounds fine. IIRC it has totally different mastering to the CD version for which Thelonious Jr. was responsible. Again if IIRC the CD mastering came in for some criticism - I'm completely happy with the LP edition.
  2. Brains on Fire is pretty good and ahead of the Bird/Monk tribute which I too haven't played in an age
  3. Harris Eisentstadt ------Woodblock Prints------(NoBusiness)
  4. Freddie Redd --------The Connection---------(BN) United Artists mono ---thanks to BillF stunning sounding edition. Not mastered by RVG but expertly done . Other than lamination the sleeve is an exact repro of the original. I've only heard CD versions of this date which always sounded a little rough. This is anything but.
  5. Pete Jolly -----------Impossible---------(Metrojazz) Duo with Ralph Pena (bass) . Sounds like it might be dull but it's not. There's nothing remotely challenging about the repertoire but the absence of drums give the set a beautiful feeling.
  6. Ornette Coleman-----This is Our Muusic-------(London) mono - with thanks to BillF Outstanding of course and sounding very fine.
  7. I'm afraid to say that Crumb and Henry Cowell don't mean anything to me. Perhaps I should check them out. Geomusic I would say is jazz/improv NP Peter Brötzmann & Han Bennink Still Quite Popular After All Those Years
  8. If it's as good as "Immune to Clockwork" we are in for a treat. Irish and Scottish fans will be frustrated though.....
  9. Plays Horace Silver is a good one. It even boasts Henry Grimes on bass !!
  10. Michael J Smith-------Geomusic--------( Pronit ) White crow black disc, Klub Peytowy Polskiego...... 1975 trio with Zbig Namyslowski (alto) and Jacek Bedarek (bass) . Smith does Cecil Taylor - I don't know how typical of his work this is. Recorded in Warsaw. Rudimentary generic cover.
  11. Gilbert Holmstroms Kvintett-------Utan Misstankar-------(Moserobie) Classic 1965 Swedish free jazz date that I'd never heard of until recently. Reissued meticulously by Moserobie in apparently better sound than rare original.
  12. Dizzy Gillepsie-------One Bass Hit parts 1 & 2 ---------(Musicraft) Charlie Parker-----Crazeology- Three ways to play a chorus/-Relaxing at Camarillo------------------(Esquire UK) Gerry Mulligan---------Motel/ Makin' Whoopee---------(Vogue UK)
  13. Donald Byrd ------Royal Flush-------(BN Liberty) After 'Byrd in Flight' my next favourite Byrd album. Very fine sounding RVG mastered LP.
  14. Archie Shepp-----Yasmina , a black woman ------(Affinity UK) I've never been quite sure of the legitimatecy of these sessions whatever label . These Affinity issues sound fine, quiet pressings and are cheap /easy to find. Good session next Harry Beckett ---Flare Up ------( Philips UK) Top drawer jazz.
  15. I got mine as a Last Chance . Perhaps the best bought on the spur of the last moment . Don't play it too often but when I do I absolutely love it.
  16. Elton Dean---------Cheque is in the mail-------(Ogun) The "dated' sound of Gallivan's synth sounds timeless. I've mixed feelings about the end result which doesn't ultimately bring the best out of Wheeler or Dean. Worth hearing and trying again. Perhaps I'd feel it more if it was by Sun Ra -where weirdness trumps everything else.
  17. ok , putting my bottle in the fridge right now , thanks
  18. Interesting that the gatefold sleeve has a picture of Alfred Lion - credited as A&R producer. From I read elsewhere (Londonjazzcollector) this was the last BN session produced/recorded before the hand over to Liberty. Earliest edition were Liberty pressed. One might assume that having a NY label makes it an earlier pressing ( than my Liberty labelled edition), not that it actually matters and of course with BN pressings nothing can ever be assumed !!!
  19. Now spinning the stereo version - Liberty (blue/white) sounding significantly better than the CD which IIRC was a vinyl dub.
  20. It's not got the best shelf life. My working solution develops white streaks or gloop. This occurs despite keeping it in the dark. None the less it works well enough and can also be safely used on shellac
  21. Got this Fidelity HF42 record player. It sits on my desk in what you'd probably call my den. It's were I do my admin, edit photos on my mac. It's covered in bits of cameras, LPs, 78s etc. This little all in one unit sounds abysmal with 45s or 33s but 78s sound brilliant. It's so quick to change discs, swivel my car and pick something else off the shelves beside me. It's lower fidelity suits some battered 78s better than my main rig which reveals all the warts. NP Clara Smith--------West Indies Blues/ The Clearing House Blues--------(Columbia) flag label--- enjoyed many times by previous owners Louis Armstrong ------Cornet Chop Suey/ Muscat Ramble---------(Columbia UK) 1940s (?) reissue, from master though & sounds great especially as the disc is near mint.
  22. Art Blakey's Jazz messengers with Thelonious Monk -----(London) UK mono edition. Great sound and balance !!!
  23. Jimmy Raney -----Two Jims and a Zoot -------(Fontana ) mono
