  1. It's not uncommon for records not to capture how good a player can be live .( think Bird)! I'm enjoying "Lonely City" right now and it's a nice if not especially earth shattering date . Well worth getting as neither Redd or C recorded that much we have to treasure everything.
  2. A fine player and a great Scot. I've a few excellent sessions he lead for the Hep label.
  3. Nice find.. NP Freddie Roach ------Brown Sugar--------(BN) NYC stereo dg. Perhaps Frederick's least successful BN. The funereal "The Midnight Sun will never set" is an odd choice to start side 2. It brings out the worst of Roach's rinky-dink funfair style B3 playing. As a haunting ballad "All night long" is much better with Joe Henderson sounding as if he is putting at least some effort in. Albeit not much but the lazy sound works quite nicely. I'm not too surprised that M. Cuscuna overlooked reissuing this one domestically. Fair comment , any lovers of this session still awake?
  4. Ted Curson-----Tears for Dolphy-------(Fontana UK) mono MR cover
  5. Yes that's it. Serie.WOC is on the LP's PVC cover.
  6. Sahib Shihab------ Sentiments ----(Storyville ) recent reissue made in Italy. Sound quality is excellent. No reason to believe it's a boot.
  7. I've a small stack of empty CD cases awaiting the return of the correct CD. I had lost the disc for a nice Grachan Moncur date . After repeated attempts to locate it I found it with a Charlie Ventura Chrological Classic disc which I rarely play ( not mad about CV).
  8. Jimmy Giuffre ------1961--------( ECM) this album has intrigued for years but I found the dry thin sound very distracting. However with my current cartridge/phono stage ( upgraded over the past 18 months ) the whole set has now come alive at last so I can hear what's going on.
  9. Roscoe Mitchell -----And the Sound and Space Ensembles------(Black Saint) My first Roscoe bought around 25 years ago. It's a good one.
  10. My favourite Hope LP NP Cecil Taylor--------Live at the Cafe Montmartre--------(Debut) mono Danish LP. Not sure if this is the original issue but the sound is very clear.
  11. An old favourite. I decided not to upload the cover to spare the reputation of this place. Sandy Brown ---- Hair at it's hairiest -----(Fontana) Classic album with a bizarre line up with Kenny Wheeler and Johnny McLaughlin joining the cheesefest. Look up the back cover if you're feeling strong and no one else is looking. Wonder whose idea it was to protect Sandy's modesty with a sporran
  12. David Liebman Quintet -------- Doin' it again------(Timeless ) Rather good date from 1979 with a young John Scofield sounding very distinctive.
  13. this arrived today, sounds very nice and excellent performances/ tune selection for both sets.
  14. The wait will be worth it NP Mundell Lowe------Quartet------(London) 1955 Riverside I've not played this in ages and I'd forgotten just how good Lowe was. Boppish lines and never a dreary moment on this album. Dick Hyman's organ is occasionally rinky-dink but otherwise this recording has aged very well. Listen to Lowe's Far from vanilla , some very unorthodox ideas which wouldn't have been out of place with Sun Ra. Nothing like the snooze-fest I thought I remembered. The London pressing is as perfect as 60 year old vinyl gets. Some Riversides can sound like really cheap production numbers not this. Jack Higgins - engineer take a bow.
  15. Borje Fredriksson------Intervall------(Parlophone) Sweden.( a RSD issue from a few years ago) Highly recommended. Although a physical copy might be hard to find. This album has been discussed before but needs to be more widely known. Joakim Milder opened my ears to Fredriksson's great pieces.
  16. Unfortunately we had to cancel going. Family illness prevented us going so going to be rescheduled probably for May. I'll keep the 78s I'd chosen aside as the choices still stand.
  17. Received the Gullin LP this morning. Audio quality is pretty good although there are some issues. Overall it sounds a little rough but it's perfectly listenable, well above bootleg quality. I kind of regret getting the LP as the sound quality of the tape sources aren't really good enough to make the most of the vinyl medium. Plus the CD issue has extra tracks. The music is as interesting for Gullin's fellow musicians as it for him. Rolf Billberg and Dexter G get plenty of space. Sahib Shihab plays some groovy flute over Cole Porter's I love you Even the rarely heard Harry Backlund can be heard. The track originally recorded under Flavio Ambrosetti sounds the least like Gullin's usual fare. My only gripe would be that i would interested to know the source and stories behind the tapes from which these tracks were culled. Given that of the four session sampled none contribute more than 12 minutes of music suggesting there might be more from those sessions - perhaps not. The liner notes really only offer Gullin's bio , some quotes from other musicians , no analysis of the music. Minor gripes aside it's always good to have more Lars Gullin especially since Dragon appear to have stopped their output of his material.
  18. seconded : it's some intense playing. it would be great if it came out on CD especially if there were some bonus tracks. This LP was the first I ordered online in this case from Dusty Groove and that was before I realised that a vinyl grade of VG- should be avoided. My copy has one long scratch on one side
  19. Good call NP Shirley Scott ----plays Horace Silver---------(Prestige) st. Trio date with Henry Grimes and Otis Finch Swings pretty hard
  20. I'll put in a good word here for my Dynavector XX-2 cartridge. I noticed a huge improvement over a cheaper MC of theirs ( I forget the name). NP Bradford/Gjerstad ------The Delaware River------(NoBusiness)
  21. I only have 'Morning Glory' and agree it's very good. I've never heard 'Westering home '
  22. I have a Linn tonearm on my Lenco GL75. It's largely used for 78s. Otherwise my system comes from Japan, England , Canada, Sweden, Switzerland & China. All works together beautifully . NP Bill Perkins----- Just Friends-----( Pacific Jpn) King reissue.
  23. I had to get a second copy of this. .The spindle hole wasn't centred correctly. It affected one side only and caused a wowing like distortion to the sound . My second copy was perfect.
  24. Janos Gonda Sextet------Shaman song/Samanenek ---------(Pepita) medieval chanting meets conga meets lectric piano meets modal jazz meets some weird sh!t.... Hopefully you get the idea. European through and through . More than 'interesting ' Hungarian LP from the late 70s.
  25. Sun Ra -------On Jupiter ------( Art yard /Kindred spirit)
