....got rained on with his own thirty-eight. Oh yes, love that album, love them all I've very few TW but this might be the best I've heard so far ( only 3!!!!) I'd suggest Blue Valentine next if it's not been one of the three It's not among the three. "Foreign Affair" and "Bad as me" are the other two. I'll look out for BV , thanks.

Marion Brown ------Why Not-------(ESP Japan ) like Brown a lot. Next Robert Wyatt-----Nothing can stop us now------(Rough Trade) came with a 12inch of Shipbuidling/ Round Midnight and Memories of You. The album is a mixed bag to say the least all very intriguing. Very politically minded tracks. Interesting , recommended if you are intrigued and its cheap

The law of diminishing returns applies here to a rather considerable degree.

Tony Fruscella/ Davey Schildkraut ------------Bebop is where it's at-Vols 1 & 2 ----------(Honey Dew) Fascinating document of these two leaders , they don't play together but lead their own quartet. Bill Triglia plays very well, fast bebop , is common to both dates. Don Joseph is on trumpet with TS and DS's extra horn is Phil Woods. Sound quality is a little bit cleaner on the Schildkraut set but its more than listenable on both. Both leaders intrigue me in equal measure, so I'm very pleased with this recent purchase.

Sad news, a real quality player from his earliest days. Sweden produced some incredible jazz musicians in the 50s and he was one. RIP

I've Volume 3 , pressing quality is fine and the overall sound quality is decent if not earth shattering. A bit of gimmick but a nice one at that. i'm sure i will get the others. Audiophiles also be warned that Ron McMaster is responsible for the mastering, using facilities of Capitol studios in LA, which I'm sure means that these are not analogue all the way.

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
Clunky replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Lars Gullin----- The EMI Years 1964- 1976-----(EMI Sweden) Jazz Amour , so very different from his 50s output. Fine mastering on this 1987 LP set, don't know if there was ever an CD version. Recommended -
Thanks for the heads-up. One of the best gigs I have ever been to, honestly...LP will be special! No way I could resist this one. I have no reservations re Oto LPs, great pressings, wonderful cover art which I love !!! . I have some concerns that newly recorded LPs we see issued these days are little more than CDs on LP with a nice cover. Oto price their LPs at a price that says , try me. So I will be supporting them too.

I'd very much like to get this one, pity amount the minimalist cover though

Edit to say I found his on Doug Payne's site, which suggests its the B take TROMBONE BY THREE Kai Winding Sextette New York City: August 23, 1949 Kai Winding (tb); Brew Moore (ts); Gerry Mulligan (bs); George Wallington (p) Curley Russell (b); Roy Haynes (d). a. My guess is that their issues predate Esquire which started IIRC around 1949 Wiki has 1947 as Esquire's start. They issued quite a range of material I've a fair number of their 78s with material from Prestige/New Jazz, Metronome (Sw), King, Barclay (Fr), Dial. Melodisc issues covered HRS, Savoy, Prestige a.o. judging by the handful I have.

Music you'd like to hear and probably won't.

Or indeed the solo interval sets Herbie played when Jazz Messengers at Cafe Bohemia was being recorded., -
Yup, beats my Jasmine edition by a mile.

Clunky, I`ve edit my post. Cool, I'd only add that they're worth going for to hear the music for not much money ( up to £4)

Bought a heap ( 14) 78s yesterday, all filthy but very shiny when cleaned up. Seven Vogue UK Gerry Mulligan Quartet sides with Chet. On reflection I'm not sure why I bought them other than for historical purposes. I think I hoped that they might contain unknown takes as seemed to be Bock's habit. To be honest I lost interest in doing AB comparisons with the 3 CD set I have. I did observe considerably improved presence in the sound of the instruments with space around the players despite the added hiss. Also tape wobbles evident on CD were absent. No hidden takes as far as I can tell !! The lot also included what would become Birth of the Cool sides by Miles,( Jeru/Godchild) a very fine Melodisc UK (New Jazz) (Sid's Bounce/ Night on Bop Mountain)disc by Kai Winding with George Wallington, So all in some decent sides. Only one in rough condition a rather marvellous Metronome all stars with Serge, Getz, Tristano, Bauer,Winding, Max Roach, Diz, etc. Very cool couple of sides ( Double Date /No Figs) Tristano sounded like he'd called all the shots and was sounding superb. Much higher quality than you'd expect from an all star event.

Affinity was certainly a cheap label but it would be quite wrong to say they all sound poor. I've a number of examples which sound very good with very quiet surfaces. Material culled from Vee Jay, Bethlehem, BYG etc. Crap covers with nasty cover "art" but often with a thoughtful essay by Brian Priestly.

I'd suggest removing the link , given the policy here regarding bootlegs. Ok to discuss but not link

Recent order from Martin Bobby Bradford -Love's dream Carter/ Bradford - Tandem 2 SME- Challenge Gerd Dudek- day and night (psi) All very different , doubled the number of Emanems I have !! The Dudek is superb free-ish jazz as opposed to improv. Needs further listening but strikes me as a classic. I'm not familiar with much of his playing , having only bits and pieces on collaborative sessions. It's a pity that quite a number of key Emanem /Psi disc are OOP. Having said that it must be good for Mr Davidson.

I've had a Ringmat for many years. I don't recall much of choice and certainly none of the complexity their website seems to offer . Like Larry I recall being struck by the improvement from my standard felt mat. Try before you buy , as you may notice nothing and your money is wasted.
