Oh, I do hope it doesn't just include Ella's work with the band. Or does it include the material after Chick died and Ella took over for a while? MG Apparently you haven't read the descripton on the Mosaic site the first post linked to. Here it is again: http://www.mosaicrecords.com/genres.asp?dept=50 (scroll down) Oh, good. I wouldn't get the Prez with Basie box, or the Chu Berry. I want boxes with the crappy stuff in them, not just what authorities think is good. Thanks Hans. MG I think you're missing out , especially in regards to the Chu set. How else can the listener get a handle on Chu but on a set where the focus is on him. He lead so few dates of his own that compromise is needed to make the set a manangable size and meet its original aim to focus on Berry.

Amazing to think the oldest record here was recorded around the time man achieved powered flight.

At last some sense. -
Just played this as I was considering getting rid of it. Having listened I really like it , so it stays in the collection.

Just because you reject even the notion that anyone might get an ounce of pleasure out of their music, I don't think you ought to flat out deny the mere possibility. It's all a matter of entropy. It only happens by chance as I recall. The process may be sped up by a catalyst such as the presence of an intact OBI strip. -
I've a couple of the relatively recent Leo Wright Atlantic CDs from Japan and whilst they're loud they sound pretty good to my analog ears.

John Coltrane--------Meditations--------(HMV) mono edition. Quite a noise fest. but it does cohere moderately well.

Got my copy of "Flight for four" and have briefly compared to my original vinyl. The reissue is as you'd expected wholly faithful to the original in every way. The sound of the horns seem a little more forward on the new CD but its a marginal thing. I've a decent set up for both CD and vinyl and the CD sounds really good and of course totally free from any pops and clicks. Another really great reissue. Thanks.

I agree, very few of these new vinyl edition give any idea of how they've been remastered. I'd feel totally cheated if I found that a supposed audiophile vinyl edition was in fact mastered from a digital source.

Horrid, this sort of rip off ruins the chances surely of us seeing decent reissues.

Dating Atlantics is all down to the label . Black, Bulls eye, white fan , black fan etc Just guessing but I'd think that black label would be the original?

The Gene Siegel Orchestra ---------( self titled) --------(Pjazz) rec. LA 1969 Jazz big band with some rock influence . None of the named soloist mean much to me but it's all well played . Some of the compositions sound more like pop songs from the late 60s. It's never tweet though . Anyone else know this

Clifford Jordan ------Hello, Hank Jones------(East World, Jpn)- direct to disc session , waxed in NY , the quartet completed by Reggie Workman and the great Freddie Waits are all superbly recorded. A very good date.

First new 78s in a month or so, got a dozen or so most of which seem to involve Hawk , sides with the Henderson brothers on Decca, sides on Davis with Monk or Walter Thomas, with the Chocolate Dandies on Parlophone and these four fine jam session like sides from an all star group. The Varsity Seven It's Tight Like That/ Easy Rider (Varsity 8147) Scratch My Back/ Save it pretty mama (Varsity 8135)

No rara avis but an utterly timeless classic with appeal to many listeners whether jazz fans or not.

Ditto, impossible to resist . I've an original vinyl of the Carter/Bradford , so I will be keen to see how they compare.

Stanton and Shure do similar carts that allow a range of stylii to used. Expert Stylii seem to be able to retip any stylus to whatever spec is required. I'm sure someone in the US could do something similar though. Retipping sounds a bit dubious but the results I've had are very robust and sound light years better than the original 78 stylii manufactured by Ortofon .
-
It's an Ortofon OM 5 moving magnet cartridge. The various stylii slide in easily but securely . It's a stereo cart but the mono button on my amp sorts that out. Tracking weight is 3 gm on the stylii I've had made for me by Expert Stylus here in UK. I'm pleased wirh the set up as I can play 78s or LPs. Although more usually I use my Amadeus TT for LPs.

I've been trying out an additional wider stylus 0035 rather than 0032. The former is meant to be closer in size to many pre-war 78s. The reality is as you might expect very variable. Of the sides I've tried so far pre war UK Decca and HMV sound much better with very little background hiss. UK Columbia sound no better no worse. A few worn items sound better as the stylus is riding higher in the groove and away from the wear. Nice addition to and probably my last 78 stylii collection ( 3 int total). Worth it I think but longer play back will answer that question. I think I'll need to start marking down which 78 sound better with which stylii. Hmmm. .....sounds much too organised for me.

Chenier was a new name to me until last weekend, when I picked up at a small record fair, the "Very best of" LP on Arhoolie from '68. Great music indeed , swings like mad.
