I was trying to weed out some duplicates from my collection. I thought that my LP copy of "Miles Davis All Stars feat. John Coltrane with Cannonball Adderley (Jazz Band) was totally redundant with this 2CD set. The LP gives the wrong dates and an incorrect title. More note worthy is that the pitch of the Jan. 3rd 1959 date is slightly higher on the Jazz Band LP. Anyone know if this is correct or the united archives CDs? It's hard to make judgements re sound quality of the transfers given the different pitches.

Nonaah- nothing else like it in my collection

George Handy-" By George (Handy of course)"- X / VIK (RCA)- mid fifties date by this gifted arranger. Some nice solos hidden amongst a fairly third stream like music. Dave Schildkraut has some excellent spots with his very fluid sound. Certainly a very interesting date and unlike much else of that time.

Wadada Leo Smith on the air with Josh Jackson
Clunky replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
It's good to this piece and Wadada in general getting this level of publicity for what is a major work. I've had the CDs some time now but find it quite difficult to digest given their length. -
Yes, both the Leo Wright releases from this series are excellent. Seconded , also sound is very good despite each disc being slightly on the loud side they seem none the worse for it.

One of my daughters Pop CDs (had some enhance CD ROM like bonus tracks) got stuck inside , the drawer wouldn't open. Machine had to be dismantled by my understanding HiFi dealer.

His music is frustratingly hard to find. "Notes from the underground" was on CD but it's expensive if you can find it and omits a track from the LP Both this and "Late Date" are on amazon UK as downloads, I'm getting tempted to break my duck and go for these. Plays Evert Taube is good , I like Face to Face but its not exactly revolutionary.

Didn't Proper also do a 4CD Wardell set? Yes they did, it's on my shelves but it has that Proper sound !

Thanks MG, although I've little by JHS -(Black Coffee & Mr Wonderful ) I enjoy those two greatly , I find these educational threads very interesting. You put a lot of work into getting this altogether and I for one am very grateful for your efforts.

With their HQ in Glasgow MG er.... you mean Edinburgh I thought it was Glasgow where you score all your 78s. MG This is the place in my home town - Edinburgh

Roberto Pattinato- Purity - (Sony) Not heard of this Argentinian tenor sax player but look at the company he's keeping. Pattinato doesn't strike me as particularly original. Free tenor blower but i've listened to this repeatedly over the past month. Word of warning my copy has 2 second silent drop out at about the 52 minute mark , I've not tried another copy so don't know if it's widespread.

Okay - that's cool, worn or not! If it's a Paramount, it may sound better worn. I thought it pretty cool too. In fact it's not too worn and more than listenable

Ma Rainey "Bo Weavil blues/ Last minute blues" -(Paramount ) 1923- today's "find", this copy enjoyed by previous owners it's fair to say. Some damage to one label, an edge flake and some moderate groove wear. A nice addition to my small blues library -

Just picked up his second date with Ben Tucker on a UK Vogue LP . Tucker really just walks the whole 2 sides. Gambrell's a bit inconsitent in that he at times sound like a cocktail pianist trying to be bold with clever licks plonked into fairly routine playing. I like his originals the best but Porter's "Anything Goes" is pretty good. So a mixed bag, worth hearing but I wouldn't pay for an expensive Japanese edition etc.

Seconded, it's a very good release ( first I've heard by Decoy)

http://www.jazzhouserecords.co.uk Alan Ross of Jazz House Records (Leicester) had these for £13 each , which I thought was very reasonable. He's supplied all my Rogue Arts to date, ( the above plus Bindu, Book of Three, Emerald Hills)

I've listening to and enjoying these three. Watershed is probably the best of a good bunch. I've only half a dozen or so Rogue Art discs and have yet to come across a dud. Sound Q is also top notch even with live recordings such as Watershed. There's an interesting video on their site regarding the Watershed recording. Denis Fournier comes across in some places in the video as being a little heavy handed but on the disc itself his touch is excellent. All three recommended.

The UK version is just fine . During what period did Decca use this method of production.?

Three finds from yesterday by blues singers unknown to me. All in pretty good condition which is especially remarkable given that they are blues records which generally seem to be played to death. Mamie Smith & her Jazz Hounds- If you don't wan me blues/ Mem'ries of you mammy (OKeh) 1920, NYC - Mamie Smith (v) with Johnny Dunn ©, Dope Andrews (tb), Ernest Elliott (cl), Leroy Parker (vn), Porter Grainger (p) Another Smith added to my collection. The blues side is better of the two. Interesting. next......... Rosetta Crawford - Im tired of fattening frogs for snakes / Double Crossin Papa (Brunswick UK) 03461 NY Feb 1939 Lovely , not heard of her previously finally............. Rose Henderson Everyday blues / Hes never gonna throw me down (Perfect 12100) USA , rec. NY December 1923 No image for this one, label states "Soprano" and her first name as Rose not Rosa. Again a very good blues singer. It tough to choose the winner from these three. Recorded sound quality varies from average acoustic 78 with the Henderson to excellent acoustic recording for the Smith and then average electric recording for the the Crawford. The Henderson probably just edges but they are all fine sides.

I've liked the Stones for years but have been cautious about getting too many and weaker sets ( ie the earlier and later material ). I'd also avoided "Exile". I caved in last year and can't believe just how good it is. It's right up there with "Aftermath" and "Let it bleed". What other Stones' title did you keep?
