  1. Jimmy Ponder -------White Room-------(Impulse) variable success on this one. Some decent tracks but also some lame material too.
  2. Unfortunately the two I'm interested in are only available in vinyl...ah, well. Regrettably I've mixed feelings re NoBusiness vinyl , I've 5 and none sound especially good ( sound quality ) . Interesting performances yes, audiophile dream no.
  3. Some nice finds there. Two dollars for a Bessie Smith ? I think so. The Berry will be known to many but original Commodores lay waste to LP/CD reissues ( that I've heard) Played some 78s today for the first time in weeks. I bought four for £2 a piece. Two nice Rex Stewart Blue Stars from 1947 in Paris, a Brunswick UK pairing of Mary Lou Williams with Mound City grouping on the other. Finally an Ida Cox Parlophone UK (Last mile blues) from 1941. I'm still not quite sure if I have it already as my database of shellac is incomplete. All four were very grubby but cleaned up well with only Stewart's "Don't get around much any more" showing signs of wear. Also bought a Grateful Dead LP ( only my second) but that's another thread altogether.
  4. I'm sorry I just don't get it. Perhaps I need to get the Mosaic to hear what they are a preachin but I just tried to listen to "No sun in Venice" and died of boredom after side one.
  5. this sounds great. Eisenstadt's always interesting to me even if I don't warm to all of his ventures. I've greatly enjoyed what I've heard so far. Strong writing full of melody yet sounding modern and devoid of post bop droning. I picked up a few in the Cleanfeed sale which helped drawn me in. This new one looks promising but I'm meant to be reducing what I buy so we'll see.
  6. Herbie Nichols ----my first and best
  7. I'm really sorry to hear of your accident. I have very mixed feelings about cycling since my own accident 2 years ago. Slid off the bike an a descent in the Pyrenees . I too wasn't going fast, about 10-12mph. Bruised my left side badly but more crucially prolapsed a disc in my neck. Two and a half years , three operations and enough painkillers & pain modifying agents to stop a herd of elephants , I'm only just getting back to some sense of normal. The good news is that surgery in August appears to have worked. It's been a long dark night and the ground colder than I could ever have imagined. Bradley Wiggins said on winning a stage of the tour of Britain the other day that he'd rather end in hospital than lose. I wasn't happy with that message, cyclists need to be careful and minimise the risks. Unfortunately it's a fact of cycling is that you fall off, it's part of the deal. Subsequent medical disasters don't help, as I can attest. Ed, I hope you have the courage to get back on your bike, I'm not sure I do. I'm pretty sure my days of road biking are over. From where I am now, cycling on the pavement seems challenging enough.
  8. A good one. I'm not clear why Roach wasn't served well by CD issues. What didn't Cuscuna not like about this album , it's great!
  9. My amazon cloud "copy" of Kenny Dorham Showboat sounds very bad, probably very low bit-rate MP3 which sounds unlistenable even on a humble iPod. Otherwise quite a neat service but you'd wonder about the added pressure this puts on smaller labels such as Chuck's.
  10. I agree with Rooster and BBS but we've been round the houses so many times. No links to boot/ grey issues. It does seem a bit overly protective to worry about 30 yr old LPs but Jim wants to spend the money we're donating to keeping the forum up and not on legal fees. It's a while since I mentioned my Jazz Collector 78s from 1949, dubs of Paramount material etc. I doubt they were legal when they were released. I'll be sure not post any links to these items in future
  11. Australian 78s are said to very good pressings and well regarded. I believe Indian 78s ( HMV etc) also can be good. I'm guessing it'll be down to the purity of the shellac and how fine the filler is.
  12. Hmmm...... If I've understood it correctly quite a number of the titles ( 30+) have been transferred from CD sources. I hope I'm wrong
  13. Something for the weekend...... Sent
  14. Jimmy Rowles.....We could make such beautiful music together.......(.Xanadu Silver) I've been going through some of my vinyl in attempt to slim it down. This has a dog-eared cover ( lots of edge wear) but it's a nice date, nothing exceptional but good playing of a pleasing variety of tunes. Hmmm......looks like this one stays....for now
  15. another for the Mad Dogs box. Excellent music in great sound, makes me wonder why I'm so attached to vinyl as the sound totally eclipses most recent vinyl recordings I've bought ( NoBusiness, Pi etc)
  16. Stanley Turrentine ~ The Baddest Turrentine CTI That ciggy's getting awful close the the tubes... That's what Stanley used, to light up ..
  17. Stanley Turrentine ~ The Baddest Turrentine CTI I thought the lack of valves in shot was out of respect to the record label being Solid State. I thought that was what the eagled eyed Chuck had spotted.
  18. I'm struggling to think of an album that has few vocals from the All-Stars era. Plays Handy is better than "Satch Plays Fats" - although I've only heard the latter in its initial CD incarnation which IIRC has some part-alternate takes in place of spliced master takes. Makes the whole think seem under rehearsed .
  19. I know, I was joking Hmm ... what happens if you hit the mono button when listening to the re-chanelled stereo of the first CD issue of Milestones. Does that restore the sound back to it's original balance etc?? Simply put, it combines the signals from both channels including the information carried by those signals; in other words you can't get rid of the rechannelling artefacts or any other artefacts that were not present in the original mono signal. Same goes for combining the signals from both channels of a stereo recording when you hit the mono button, you won't get a pure mono signal. It must surely depend on how the re-channelling has been achieved. I recall as a child fiddling with a 10 band equaliser applying equal and opposite dB changes to every second band to spread the sound. Depressing the mono button in I such circumstances must surely recreate the original mono signal albeit with some loss of SQ given that its passed through a 10 band and then a mono button. I certainly gain some aural satisfaction from using my mono button to improve the sound on the few rechannelled LPs and CDs that I have. It does sound better , to my ears at least. May not be a true mono mix but it's an improvement .
  20. I know, I was joking Hmm ... what happens if you hit the mono button when listening to the re-chanelled stereo of the first CD issue of Milestones. Does that restore the sound back to it's original balance etc?? When it comes to Milestones I significantly prefer my mono Fontana vinyl to either of the cd versions I have. I assumed this was simply a matter of vinyl prowess rather than the benefits of monaural reproduction.
  21. Kenny Dorham--------Matador---------(UA) mono , complete with ear in the dead wax. Sounds wonderful and vastly better than the CD version I've "treasured" for two decades.
  22. The clips ( despite being highly compressed) sound very much like Bud, lots of groaning and moaning as was his want. I don't recall hearing Wallington so much as murmur on his releases. It is indeed astonishing that this date was previously unknown.
  23. How about an HMV pressing from UK. I got mine recently. In fact a whole bunch of Trane HMVs for £10. Sound excellent even if they were from tapes copied and shipped to these shores .
