The event is rooted in Indian Classical Music and its unique time cycle in which specific musical modes are performed at specific times of day. Listeners and viewers will journey from Japan to Nepal to Madagascar as the musical offerings flow between traditional presentations and cross-cultural, genre-blurring collaborations. Born in 2012 when 50 musicians volunteered to create an FM-Broadcast with the theme of “Community, Unity, and Harmony,” the festival graduated to become a popular live event at Pioneer Works. For the first time, Ragas Live Festival will be live-streamed and broadcast from and around the world, a musical collaboration at an unprecedented scale, and a testament to the transcendent power of music. During the penultimate set of the festival Brooklyn Raga Massive will perform a raga based homage to Terry Riley called In “D.” An original composition, performed by 24 musicians, this, like last year’s Ragmala, will be released as an album concurrently with the Ragas Live Festival. Presented by Pioneer Works, Brooklyn Raga Massive, NYC Radio Live and the Rubin Museum of Art.

  12. Plenty of improvisers are specialists in now-ness, revealing a solo as a series of events, or present-tense flashes. With Mr. Harrell, it’s all one event. He’s always processing ahead and behind, and you feel as if you’re hearing the whole of the narrative at all times, from was to is to will be." - The New York Times Tom Harrell will be back on the Vanguard stage this Friday and Saturday night; accompanying him will be Luis Perdomo on piano and Ugonna Okegwo on bass. Each show begins at 8 PM EST and will be available to stream for 24 hours; tickets are $10. Yazz Ahmed Hey everyone! I hope you’re well and happy. I have a very exciting event happening tomorrow (19th Nov) at 20:00 UK time! I will be performing at the beautiful Kings Place, London, as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival! This concert is with my quartet, Ralph Wyld on vibraphone, Dave Manington on bass guitar and Martin France on drums. This is my main touring band, I absolutely love this line-up. The guys are all incredible musicians and every time we play it is a musical adventure. Over the last couple of years we’ve performed dozens of gigs together all around the world. That all changed this year of course. We had a healthy tour planned for the summer, covering USA, Canada, France, Portugal, Poland, Tunisia, Finland and the UK, however, all these concerts had to be cancelled or postponed until next year. We were so looking forward to seeing everyone who had booked tickets for this show, however, the UK recently went back into lockdown so plans had to change. The good news is that I’m now able to invite you all to join us virtually, by watching the live stream from wherever you are on the planet! This is the link for tickets and don’t worry, if you can’t tune in when it goes live, as long as you’ve bought a ticket you’ll be able to view the concert at any time during the following week. www.kingsplace.co.uk/whats-on/jazz/yazz-ahmed-online-streaming/?fbclid=IwAR1OuNE3LatRsz9kKeXw5oSIeYIqpakxX8nPSUTeyGAv2bsMHkbJQQ6PfwU Hope to see you there. 13. Bandcamp works like a charm. The only no-show disc I've ever had, a replacement was provided right away.
  14. BIG EARS 2021 Given the current situation, we’re going to postpone any plans for producing a Big Ears Festival in March 2020. There’s no way. It simply isn’t feasible. If there’s a lesson to be gleaned from the past nine months, it's to take nothing for granted and be flexible and ready to pivot as the situation demands. Nevertheless, we remain optimistic about the future — and about the possibility of staging Big Ears in 2021. Here’s what we have in mind: We're planning a scaled-down Big Ears Festival for late Spring, likely the weekend of May 27 - 30. We will, of course, proceed only if we can do so confidently and safely. Moving two months later will enable us to expand the festival’s traditional footprint, incorporating some beautiful outdoor spaces along with some of our traditional venues. There will be fewer performances than in the past few years — allowing us to open up more space in the overall schedule. We will also cap festival attendance at less than half of those we admitted for recent festivals. We also plan to present another festival weekend in late August or September. Ideally, this would be a second festival for 2021, also scaled-back in comparison to recent years. If the virus prevents us from staging a festival in late May, we will use this period to reschedule that event; otherwise, our goal is to create a second weekend of unique programming. In March of 2022, we plan to return with a full Big Ears Festival experience. While we're actively planning for a late May festival, we won't announce details until late January or early February. You’ll be the first to know once we have news. Safety for all is our foremost concern. Beyond that, we are, as always, fully committed to producing a Big Ears Festival that will be an enjoyable and successful experience for all who take part. In the meantime, we hope that you’ll stay in touch. We’re working on exciting new streaming initiatives and may even have a special surprise or two up our sleeves, depending on how the coming weeks play out. We're grateful for the tremendous enthusiasm and support for Big Ears that so many of you have shown. You make it possible for us to continue to do what we do — and we eagerly anticipate coming together for another unforgettable Big Ears weekend next year.
  15. At that point, he couldn't play the bass any more. He had ALS.
  16. I haven't compared versions, but the 1964 concert is also well recorded. The release is stellar.
  17. 3rd Thursday Jazz presents the great And The Band Join us for this FREE virtual concert hosted by YouTube and Sponsored by the Ft. Worth Public Library – Premieres Nov 19, 2020 at 6:30pm. Rachella Parks-Washington performs a mixture of music including jazz standards, original music and excerpts from her CD, “Meditative Inspirational Suite.” Her emotional, reflective, hopeful music is truly inspirational and uplifting for listeners. 18. In that Decca series, I have the same volume 1 of the Lunceford, volume 2 Fletcher Henderson, and Jay McShann in mono. I wish I could find more as they sound great, but almost every time I find one of this series, it is rechanneled stereo.
  19. Ahmoudou Madassane, Zerzura (Sahel Sounds)
  20. Tidiane Thiam, Siftorde (Sahel Sounds) Jimmy Rushing, Every Day I Have The Blues (Bluesway)
  21. Nicholas Payton is not a conservative Young Lion/Wynton type. He's actually quite experimental, based on the live performances I've seen in the last few years. This is the record you need:
  22. Bobby Hutcherson, Oblique (Blue Note Tone Poet) (sounds great) Archie Shepp, Kwanza (Impulse)
  23. Charles Mingus, Bremen, 1964 and 1975 (Sunnyside) I've just listened so far to the 1975 concert (I have the 1964 concert already). It is well recorded, balanced and clear, with top notch performances from all parties. A quality live version of Changes One and Two (except for Orange Was the Color...) with a couple of additional songs. Very pleased to have this concert on CD.

  25. Not that the sentence does not sound deserved, but this is an example of double standards in action. Trump and kids looted a charity and they only had to pay back the $2 million they stole and agree to be banned from running charities in New York in the future. https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2019/oct/24/facebook-posts/trump-family-disallowed-operating-charities-new-yo/
