We were staying on the outskirts of town at a friend's home. One day, we quietly set up in front of the house to film a few songs. Despite our relative isolation, the noise of the band inevitably attracted a crowd. What started as the four of us simply playing a few songs for a camera turned into a three-night run of rowdy concerts, bringing in hundreds of eager listeners. Each night, kids from all over the city would line up at our door, rushing over after their final evening prayer. These performances were completely spontaneous and wholly unplanned. Thanks to the audience in Niamey, we were able to capture the spectacular energy of a typical Niamey concert for you. We're thrilled about it and hope you will be, too. Enjoy!

I suppose this is a nerdy record collector type of question, but I just listened this morning to my copy of his Impulse release Cleopatra, a gorgeous recording. My copy is a "second" red and black label pressing. Oddly, while the cover is laminated, it is not a gatefold cover. I don't think I've seen any other Impulse recording from its heyday (orange/black or red/black label) that is not a gatefold cover. Does this record exist in a gatefold cover?

Lonesome Dove is great. Might as well start there if you haven't read his books.

It's four recorders (soprano, alto, tenor and bass recorders), backed by George Duvivier, Paul Motian and Al Schackman (guitar). Bob Dorough is on tenor (recorder) and vocals on a couple of tracks and also wrote the charts, approaching it like he is writing for a sax section. So it's really like jazz charts for four recorders, with Bob on lead tenor; the others are not improvisers. There are lengthy humorous liner notes, which begin as two loose pages as inserts and continue on the back sleeve. Bob wants to call the group the MJQ, but realizes that "the Undertakers" might be unhappy with him. The other three recordists are members of the Manhattan Recorder Consort. It's the rare semi-humorous jazz album, but the music part is actually serious--it is good, if not something I would want to listen to often. The best piece to me was the version of Autumn Leaves for just the four recorders.

Taking a more deliberate browse through the Japanese Prestige discography, I counted 21 MPS reissues. These were: 7595, 7631, 7634, 7636, 7649, 7668, 7669, 7672, 7676, 7684, 7685, 7690, 7691, 7692, 7694, 7695, 9696, 7702 7760, 7762, 7763. I seem to have most of them in blue or purple label pressings: 17.

In a quick look at the Prestige Discography, I counted 16 Prestige issues of MPS material. How else would Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald end up on Prestige?

Mark Gardner wrote the notes, dated August of 1969.

Shapeshifter Lab is a very nice venue--most notably, I saw Greg Osby there.
