Two bassist/leaders who I heard back in the halcyon days of live music at Winter Jazzfest, both of whom released recordings this year: Michael Olatuja/Lagos Pepper Soup, and Gregg August/Dialogues on Race. Michael Olatuja is a Nigerian bass guitar player whose music is a combination of Afrobeat and jazz. This recording is also available through Bandcamp. and guest artists include Brandee Younger, Lionel Loueke, Joe Lovano and Dianne Reeves. Gregg August plays acoustic bass, and he composed the music for this small big band recording, whose musicians include John Ellis, JD Allen, Marcus Rojas, Luis Perdomo, Frank Lacy and Donald Edwards. Somewhat inexplicably, this privately issued CD (available on Bandcamp) has been nominated for a Grammy.

For anyone interested, a number of additional recordings by Lafayette Gilchrist are currently available in CD form from Bandcamp.

You are right. There is so little information on the lp that I missed that. The sound is surprisingly good however.

KENNY BARRON: QUARTETS "The pianist Kenny Barron has a brisk but unostentatious technique and a deceptively casual way with a phrase. He conveys a number of things clearly in his playing; what comes across over all is the quiet hum of effortless erudition. Within his playing you can hear a digest of mainstream jazz piano traditions, with bebop as the root. You can also hear the measured tension of an expert nudging himself toward a challenge." - The New York Times Pianist Kenny Barron will be streaming this weekend, starting Friday at 8 PM EST. Accompanying Kenny will be two different quartets each night; on Friday, Steve Nelson will be on vibraphone, Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums. On Saturday night, Immanuel Wilkins will join on saxophone, rounding out the quartet with Kiyoshi and Johnathan. Shows are available to stream for 24 hours; tickets are $10.

I can't decide whether to buy volume 2. All the great guests sold volume 1; volume 2 seems to be more about Joe Castro than the guests. Am I wrong to hesitate?
-
On further thought, I would give the edge to Volume 1 because it devotes an entire side to Sam Morgan's Jazz Band.

The late Thomas Chapin would be my favorite jazz artist discovered in the 1990s.
