  2. Nathan Davis, Peace Treaty
  3. If you are staying in midtown, it is the convenient/walking distance live music option, along with Iridium. I recollect seeing there: Ron Carter, John Abercrombie, Lee Konitz, Pat Martino, Andy Summers, Vijay Iyer, the Toskiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Orchestra (except Toshiko was absent that night).
  4. Buying a pile of Tone Poets, even though in most cases I already have both an earlier LP pressing and a CD version.
  5. A late addition to the best releases of 2020: Dezron Douglas and Brandee Younger, Force Majeure. Gorgeous harp and bass duos recorded from livestream performances.

  9. He also leads a New Orleans soul/funk band and is Christian Scott’s uncle. I heard him last year at Snug Harbor with Lonnie Smith and with the band of Cuban percussionist Alexey Marti.
  10. Billy Strayhorn's Dirge (Duke Ellington, Carnegie Hall, 1943).
  11. I think I will. Then Brooklyn Circle (Smalls). Finally, Jackie Venson (Facebook Live).
  12. Okay; it wouldn't be the first time my assumptions are completely wrong.
  13. I don't know; I think he was saying that he thinks everyone on the list I posted is worthless; hasn't he expressed the opinion that everyone who is not avant garde in jazz at this point is worthless?; further, I should agree because he has a bunch of CDs and records (as if everybody here doesn't have the same qualification). It's fine; he can listen to what he wants, it's not my business; I just find it annoying to see living musicians dismissed so cavalierly; my opinions were formed based on seeing all of the musicians live, most of them multiple times. I do find myself getting testy in this pandemic isolation, so pardon me for being grumpy.
  14. Great. Not interested in your opinion.
  15. What's a young lion? A very young jazz musician who got a record contract in the 1980s/early 1990s, perhaps before they were mature enough to deserve one? Do I listen to them today checklist. 19. I very much liked it. Aside from the classic small group material from the 1930s, to me this sounds like the best band Benny Goodman ever had. Great soloists and excellent sound.
  20. Bob Brookmeyer and Bill Evans, As Time Goes By (Blue Note) Benny Goodman in Moscow (RCA Living Stereo)
  21. Excerpts from the website: There is no charge to become a member of the SmallsLIVE Foundation. Supporting Members are members who make a tax-deductible donation to the SmallsLIVE Foundation. Both free and Supporting members have access to our live-streamed shows. Supporting Members have access to our extensive Audio/Video Archive, which pays royalties to the artists involved. As Supporting Members of the SmallsLIVE Foundation watch shows in the Archive usage is registered. Artists are payed royalties based on the percentage of their individual usage divided by the overall usage of the Archive. The more popular an artist is the larger his or her share of the royalty payout will be. By listening to your favorite artists in the Archive you are supporting them directly. It is the policy of Smalls Jazz Club and Mezzrow to live stream all of our shows to our website. Streaming begins at the start of the evening and goes until the close of the venues. There is no charge to watch these live streams. Please register as a member and confirm your email address to sign in and begin watching our live stream. Each show is available in our Archive generally one week after the performance. From a recent email: Any supporting member that still wants to can sponsor a night of live music. The sponsor will have their name on the site and newsletter as well as announced at the concert. It a tax deductible donation. We are lowering our sponsorship rates to $600 for a Smalls sponsorship and $400 for Mezzrow. 100 % of these sponsorships will go to the artists. If you are interested in sponsoring a show please email us at foundation@smallslive.com and we can get you more information. I'd also like to say a donation of any size to our foundation still goes towards supporting the musicians and venues and we appreciate all the kindness of our friends worldwide.
  22. They seem to do things backwards The livestreams are free if you register. A donation to the foundation gives access to their archives. Sponsoring a livestream band is optional and expensive. You can make any donation you like to their foundation or none and still watch the livestreams. It’s not exactly clear but it seems as if the foundation donation supports the club and the sponsors pay the band.
  23. Lou Donaldson, Midnight Sun (Blue Note) Stanley Turrentine, Ain't No Way (Blue Note) Milt Jackson, All Star Bags (Blue Note)
