  1. I suggest you have another margarita and listen to some bossa nova while I contemplate opportunities lost.
  2. Three years ago, I could have easily seen Herb Alpert at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, though to my knowledge he was sans Mariachi Brass. Earlier in the day, I heard Lee Konitz. But somehow Herb Alpert was the closer on the main jazz stage. A travesty, for sure. I'm afraid I passed on Herb, even in the absence of a super appealing alternative and went to hear Lisa Fischer in the Blues Tent. I feel no regrets to this day.
  3. Sonny Criss, Out of Nowhere (Muse) Shorty Rogers and His Giants, Gigi Jazz (RCA)
  4. Nicholas Payton, Relaxin' with Nick (Smoke Sessions)
  5. Thank you. I have used the gift card against the cost of the new Paul Desmond Mosaic set.
  6. Illinois Jacquet Flies Again (Roulette)
  7. George Coleman, The Quartet (Smoke Sessions)
  8. Budd Johnson and the Four Brass Giants (Riverside)
  9. The Source is a good one; wish I hadn't missed the Art Blakey tribute.
  10. Last Sunday I did find paper towels in the grocery store for the first time in six weeks or so; it was thrilling.
  11. The anthology, That Devilin' Tune, starts with recordings from the 1890s.
  12. At a more modest price point, I've just run across Night Dreamer Records (named for the Wayne Shorter record) out of London, which has revived the Direct to Disc recording process. https://nightdreamer.bandcamp.com
  13. Seu Jorge and Roge (Night Dreamer). Fabulous recording of contemporary acoustic Brazilian music, recorded direct to disc.
  14. You'll be really sorry when the cat jumps on the turntable.
  15. George Wettling and His Windy City Seven (Stere-O-Craft)
  16. From this week's Smalls/Mezzrow email from Spike Wilner: This is a critical time for the survival of the clubs. Our landlords have been unequivocal in not bending on the rent. They won’t accept advanced payments at a discount and will not tolerate not getting paid, regardless to the fact that we haven’t earned a dime in 40 nights. So – take it or leave it. If Smalls and Mezzrow are to survive then we must float the ark until we can resume. We have some funds but not nearly enough to get us into the late summer. It’s day by day. The SmallsLIVE Foundation has already been active in getting some emergency funds to some artists who are in serious financial straits. Our goal now is to raise enough to float the clubs rent-wise, at least through the summer. Please consider becoming a supporting member. By making a tax-deductible donation to our foundation, you gain access to our extensive audio/video archive of past performances at Smalls and Mezzrow (nearly 18,000 shows). A portion of your gift is distributed directly to the artists through our royalty system. Please go to our website, www.smallslive.com, and join.
