Sunday in Tulsa, Oklahoma: David Amram in Concert: A Tribute to Oscar Pettiford 5:00 p.m. Multi-instrumentalist and world-renowned composer David Amramtakes the Jazz Depot stage with a tribute concert honoring his fellow Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame inductee: the late, great Oscar Pettiford. Jazz Hall inductee David Amram has composed more than one hundred orchestral and chamber music workds, while penning many scores for both Broadway and film. He is widely known for his classic scores for the films, “Splendor in the Grass” and “Manchurian Candidate,” as well as the score for the landmark 1959 documentary, “Pull My Daisy” and two operas. Amram is also the author of three books. An inventively funny improvisational lyricist, Amram is a pioneer player of jazz French horn, a virtuoso on piano, numerous flutes and whistles, percussion, and dozens of folkloric instruments from twenty-five countries. While traveling the world as a conductor, soloist, bandleader, visiting scholar, and narrator in five languages, Amram continues to compose. -

Musicians who just lost the ability to play

Yes, when I saw Clark Terry at the Village Vanguard a few years back, it was sad. Fortunately, he had Red Holloway in the band, who was still good. -
Lonnie Smith, The Turning Point (Blue Note/Liberty). Flawless LP and seemingly unplayed, a great find.

Monday night I was in San Antonio on a work trip and stayed at the Gunter Hotel, which after I arrived I realized was the location of Robert Johnson's San Antonio recording sessions. The small display in the lobby was clearly created by an Eric Clapton fan interested in Robert Johnson solely for that reason.

Last night, Marcus Miller at the Granada Theater. I do enjoy his collaborations with Miles Davis (Siesta in particular), but have generally not followed his recordings since then. The theater was more or less full, and, not really knowing what to expect (smooth jazz?), the reward proved to be a really excellent concert, predominately in the jazz/fusion vein, with elements of world music influences. The band featured trumpet, alto (and soprano) saxophone, guitar, drums, percussion (Minu Cinelu). Mr. Miller of course played electric bass, a large African stringed instrument, and bass clarinet. The trumpet player was particularly good. I would definitely go see him again, if presented with the opportunity. -
