What live music are you going to see tonight?
kh1958 replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
And last Friday and Saturday nights at the Winter Jazzfest: 1. David Murray Clarinet Summit (Hamiett Bluiett, Don Byron, Nasheet Waits). 2. David Murray, Geri Allen, Terry Lynne Carrington Trio. 3. Trio 3 (Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille), with Vijay Iyer 4. Mark Ribot's Young Philadelphians with Strings (with Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Mary Halvorson) 5. Kavita Shah 6. Amina Claudine Myers Trio (Jerome Harris, Reggie Nicholson). 7. The Cookers (Billy Harper, Donald Harrison, Eddie Henderson, George Cables, Cecil McBee, David Weiss, Victor Lewis). 8. Rudresh Mahanthappa Charlie Parker Project. 9. Henry, Hampton and Low. Some standing in the cold was required, but for a rich musical banquet. -
Saturday, once again at the Minetta Lane Theater, the first set was by Kavita Shah, a vocalist who released her first album on Inner Circle last year. I like the record, and similarly enjoyed her jazz/world music fusion set and group (Shai Maestro on piano and Petros Klampanis on bass). This was followed by the Amina Claudine Myers Trio, with Jerome Harris on guitar and bassn and Reggie Nicholson on drums. This was one of my favorite sets of the festival; she played organ only and vocals. Next came the Cookers, who were predictably of high quality, particularly Billy Harper on tenor and Cecil McBee on bass (I had never seen Cecil McBee live before). After that, Rudresh Mahanthappa's Charlie Parker Project (a pretty loose inspiration, as this was not the usual Charlie Parker tribute). Except for the drummer, his group was all new to me--this again was an outstanding set and group--a favorite from the festival. Finally, Henry, Hampton & Low (Levon Henry, Alan Hampton & Meshell Ndegeocello), more in the vein of a pop/jazz fusion group, which I liked a lot more than I expected I would, after waiting through the most difficult set-up I witnessed at the festival. After that, Nicholas Payton wasn't appealing to me, so I called it a (freezing) night. Overall, it was really fun to hear no less than nine groups that I liked over the course of two nights and in a nice venue from the front row. I hope I can make it back again next year.

Last night, Diego Figuieredo (Brazilian guitarist) at Mezzrow, and Jean Michel Pilc (solo piano) at Somethin' Jazz on 52nd Street. -
Joe's Pizza is great; I ate there Saturday (a very cold day). That sounds terrific--I was just too tired Friday to stay up too late (got up at 5 a.m. and flew from Dallas to NYC on Friday).

We heard a lot of the same stuff the first night--I enjoyed both David Murray sets (the trio with Geri Allen and Terry Lynne Carrrington especially); Trio 3 was really good; and the Mark Ribot set was fun as well (Jamaaladeen Tacuma I had not seen him since the mid-1980s, he sounded great), though my ears were blasted by the end of their set, so I didn't stay for the Lurie set. I liked what I heard of Mary Halvorson in the Mark Ribot set but there wasn't enough of it.

You are a couple of hours from New Orleans? It's worth it to travel to hear music.

Art Blakey, A Night at Birdland, volume 2 (W. 63rd/NY USA). Another battered copy; vivid sound but with lots of surface noise.

I recall once that I was seated in the front row, right next to Howard Johnson, who was playing tuba with Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, and seeing that he was packing up at the end of the night right by me, I made the mistake of making some praising comment about how greatly I had enjoyed his playing on tuba that night, to which he replied something to the effect--what do you know you idiot, you haven't heard anybody.

I don't have the George Adams box set but I do have the recordings in CD and/or LP form. There are three Pullen/Adams/Richmond/Brown recordings--one studio and two live. The other two albums are a different group (and a very fine group it is), with Adams paired with Jimmy Knepper in the front line, Hugh Lawson on piano, Mike Richmond on bass, and Dannie Richmond. I do have the Don Pullen box set, which has a diverse set of seven LPs. There are two solo piano outings, a duo recording with Don Moye,, a trio with Joseph Jarman and Don Moye, two different quartet recordings (Bobby Battle on both, with Sam Rivers and Alex Blake on one, and Chico Freeman and Fred Hopkins on another), and finally a quintet with Bobby Battle and Fred Hopkins again, plus Donald Harrison and Olu Dara.

I received three of these sets for Christmas (Oliver Lake, Paul Bley and Art Farmer), and I'm happy about it!
