  1. He is.
  2. Stravinsky in McKinney this evening was a pretty mixed bag...other than the dancer, I don't know that anybody on the stage was under 30. Bad news - narrator was highly student-level, the "soldier" was played by a poor young man who really seemed to have no understanding of why any of this was happening around him, much less what role he should have in it (or even that he did have a role in it), and the dancer, though fluid, was not particularly expressive, at least not that I could feel. Good news - the young woman who played Satan was for sure the real deal, and the orchestra played like they were young and hungry and nowhere near ceiling-ed out yet. $16/ticket, could have gotten them for &12 if I had played the Senior Discount card. Perhaps too ambitious a programming for the resources at hand, but dammit, hey. I'm interested in seeing what else they bring. And they're crowd-sourcing some funding! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fund-first-season-for-young-classical-orchestra McKinney is, I suppose, actually closer to Plano than the Dallas Arts District.
  3. This morning, Arnett Cobb, Party Time (Prestige).
  4. Wow awesome to hear the CL for free! I really enjoy their recordings of Villa-Lobos and Ginastera. And in a pretty nice venue actually, five minutes from my office.
  5. There should be a Booker Ervin Festival in Denison.
  6. What next, the McKinney Albert Ayler Festival? Next Friday, and free I believe. Cuarteto Latinoamericano 2/13/2015 Latino Cultural Center Cuarteto Latinoamericano was founded in 1982 in Mexico and won the Latin Grammy Awards in 2012 for their album Brasileiro, Works of Francisco Mignone. They represent a unique voice in today’s international scene, promoting Latin American music creation throughout all continents. Cuarteto Latinoamericano are three brothers, violinists Saul and Arón and cellist Alvaro Bitrán, as well as Javier Montiel, violinist. The group was considered by the Times of London as “possessing an instinct that definitely places them in the first division of string quartets,” and by the Houston Chronicle as “one of the best quartets we have heard in years.” This performance is made possible through a partnership between the Latino Cultural Center and the Consulate General of Mexico’s Office in Dallas.

  8. Johnny Griffin and Mathew Gee, Soul Groove (Atlantic mono)
  9. Tonight, to the Allen Public Library to see the premiere screening of a new documentary on Freddy King. It was well done and actually quite moving. Mostly reminiscences from people and family members who knew him. Also, some amazing footage of Freddy King performing on acoustic guitar at the Travis County Jail for a very enthusiastic group of female prisoners (Let the Good Times Roll). A concert followed, featuring members of the Freddy King Blues Band, led by his brother Benny Turner. Quite enjoyable, though with a large void.

  11. Absurd hype but I've actually never seen Eddie Gomez live. The pianist is a professor at UNT? I'd probably prefer a solo bass concert.
  12. That's a very good recording. I don't have the CD with me but I think it's a different Sidiki (brother or cousin of Toumani).
  13. Yeah, Preclusion's a dandy record, and came out of left field, walked into the store one afternoon, though it was some new Herbie/Joe joint, which in 1974 was a real WTF?- ish consideration, but what's this, hey, she's cute too, I'll take a copy right now, please! Before The Dawn, the follow-up, was a good record too, but more "contemporary"/fusion-y in approach. Not silly music, just different in orientation. After that though, she began to explore other facets of her talents in other musical arenas. Obviously. But to this day, when I see her name in the credit on any "jazz-related" project, I'm not instantly put off, because the woman still has skills, fine skills. I wish hse'd do a Joe Sample and make a straight-ahead trio record for East-Wind and get it released in America on Inner City. I've never seen her live (almost, one time, but Geri Allen substituted at the last minute), but judging from her website, she plays a significant number of straight-ahead live jazz appearances.
  14. Last evening, two of the last new releases under the Prestige label (post-Fantasy purchase). Mark Soskin, Rhythm Vision, and Patrice Rushen, Preclusion. The Patrice Rushen release is quite fine, with Joe Henderson and Hadley Caliman.

With One O'Clock Lab Band, probably not.
  16. Shelley Manne and His Men at the Blackhawk Volume 2 (Contemporary stereo), and King Pleasure Sings (Prestige ten inch).
  17. Never heard that one. She was awesome at the Winterjazzfest three weeks ago. The Genius of Art Tatum No. 10 (Verve trumpet label), and Barney Kessel, Some Like It Hot (Contemporary stereo).
  18. His presence certainly didn't help Charles Mingus and Friends in Concert. He was deleted from the expanded CD version.
  19. Performing in Houston on May 7. I thought the US tours for the trio were done after last year? Any word if they be playing in NYC?!?!? I have only seen this listing: http://www.namelesssound.org/
  20. Performing in Houston on May 7.
  21. Is Odyssey of Iska better than Moto Grosso Feio? I'm trying to understand that album but its kind of extreme. Supernova is pretty similar right? Odyssey of Iska is one of Wayne Shorter's best, in my opinion.
  22. In addition to 1970s releases by Elvin Jones, Bobby Hutcherson and Lee Morgan, there are: Lonnie Smith, Drives, Live at Club Mozambique McCoy Tyner, Extensions, Cosmos, Asante Jeremy Steig, Wayfaring Stranger Donald Byrd, Electric Byrd Grant Green, Alive, Live at the Lighthouse Wayne Shorter, Odyssey of Iska Big John Patton, Memphis to New York Spirit
  23. New Delhi Monkeys. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/24/world/for-obamas-visit-india-takes-a-broom-to-stray-monkeys-and-cows.html?_r=0
  24. Johnny Hodges, Don't Sleep in the Subway (Verve) and The Eleventh Hour (Verve). Then, Solo Monk (Columbia two eyes mono).
