    J.D. Allen

J.D. Allen sounds very nice (as does everyone) on Orrin Evans, Liberation Blues (Smoke Sessions). with Sean Jones, Luques Curtis, and Bill Stewart.
  2. Brother Jack McDuff, Walk on By (Prestige, blue label mono), and Art Blakey and the Afro-Drum Ensemble, The African Beat (Blue Note, NY USA mono).
  3. Stanley Turrentine, The Spolier (Blue Note Liberty)
  4. Eric Kloss, Love and All That Jazz (Prestige mono), and Brother Jack MdDuff, Silk and Soul (Prestige mono)
  5. It reads exactly like the twitter account, "Jazz is the Worst."
  6. Bennie Green, Soul Stirrin" (Blue Note W. 63rd)--A battered copy sounding better than it looks.
  7. It's a very good album. And the reviewer agrees: "Eric Wyatt is a terrific, powerful saxophonist who deserves much more attention than he’s gotten to date."
  8. I believe Bitches Brew was released shortly before Columbia switched to a flimsier vinyl. Recently I was fortunate to find a two-eye pressing in unplayed condition, and it sounds astounding. That's the one I would recommend.
  9. For a time in the 1980s, he regularly appeared at the drummer at the Caravan of Dreams, whenever they would bring in a name horn player--most frequently paired with with Larry Willis (or John Hicks) and Walter Booker. So I saw him a number of times, a wonderful drummer.
  10. Rusty Bryant Returns (Prestige)
  11. That's very interesting. I was astounded to see that the on April 30, 1973, there was a performance of the second sacred concert at Lovers Lane Methodist Church here in Dallas. And June 2-4, 1972, appearing at the Loser's Club in Dallas.
  12. Modern Moods, Moodsville volume 2 (Prestige)
  13. Sara Vaughn with Clifford Brown, etc. (EmArcy)

  16. Ruth Ben-Zvi, Israeli Percussion (Prestige International)
  17. All the Cats Join In, A Buck Clayton Jam Session (Columbia six eyes)
  18. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messenger Play Lerner and Lowe (VIK mono)
  19. Tutu Jones at Babb Bros. First blues show of the year, and a very good one.
  20. Lamenting the lack of blues clubs in Dallas for world class resident artists like Lucky Peterson and Tutu Jones to perform in regularly... http://www.dallasnews.com/entertainment/music/headlines/20140711-dallas-once-vibrant-blues-scene-is-fading.ece
  21. Jaki Byard, Solo Piano (Prestige, blue label)
  22. Classic rock ended when I lost interest, which was about 1973.
  23. Too sad. I recollect seeing him live on four occasions--in a quartet led by Joe Henderson (with Al Foster), with Ornette Coleman, Pat Metheny and Denardo Coleman, in a duet with Paul Bley, and playing Latin boleros with Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Joe Lovano. The same beautiful sound in four very different settings.
  24. I've noticed some Ellington on this label that tempts me, but I have the same qualms.
