  1. Joe's Pizza is great; I ate there Saturday (a very cold day). That sounds terrific--I was just too tired Friday to stay up too late (got up at 5 a.m. and flew from Dallas to NYC on Friday).

  3. We heard a lot of the same stuff the first night--I enjoyed both David Murray sets (the trio with Geri Allen and Terry Lynne Carrrington especially); Trio 3 was really good; and the Mark Ribot set was fun as well (Jamaaladeen Tacuma I had not seen him since the mid-1980s, he sounded great), though my ears were blasted by the end of their set, so I didn't stay for the Lurie set. I liked what I heard of Mary Halvorson in the Mark Ribot set but there wasn't enough of it.
  4. Because only a small part of their brains still function.
  5. Alice Coltrane, Lord of Lords (Impulse), and Joe Harriott--John Mayer Double Quintet, Indo-Jazz Fusions (Atlantic).
  6. You should, she's good (Crash Trio and/or Second Cycle).
  7. You are a couple of hours from New Orleans? It's worth it to travel to hear music.
  8. Art Blakey, A Night at Birdland, volume 2 (W. 63rd/NY USA). Another battered copy; vivid sound but with lots of surface noise.
  9. Dewey Redman, The Ear of the Behearer (Impulse)

  11. Kenny Barron-Jimmy Owens Quintet, You Had Better Listen (Atlantic mono), and Gato Barbieri, Chapter 3: Viva Emiliano Zapata (Impulse promo).
  12. I recall once that I was seated in the front row, right next to Howard Johnson, who was playing tuba with Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, and seeing that he was packing up at the end of the night right by me, I made the mistake of making some praising comment about how greatly I had enjoyed his playing on tuba that night, to which he replied something to the effect--what do you know you idiot, you haven't heard anybody.
  13. I'm mailing a contribution this morning.

  15. Hank Crawford, The Soul Clinic (Atlantic), and The Two Sides of Benji Aronoff (Prestige).
  16. I don't have the George Adams box set but I do have the recordings in CD and/or LP form. There are three Pullen/Adams/Richmond/Brown recordings--one studio and two live. The other two albums are a different group (and a very fine group it is), with Adams paired with Jimmy Knepper in the front line, Hugh Lawson on piano, Mike Richmond on bass, and Dannie Richmond. I do have the Don Pullen box set, which has a diverse set of seven LPs. There are two solo piano outings, a duo recording with Don Moye,, a trio with Joseph Jarman and Don Moye, two different quartet recordings (Bobby Battle on both, with Sam Rivers and Alex Blake on one, and Chico Freeman and Fred Hopkins on another), and finally a quintet with Bobby Battle and Fred Hopkins again, plus Donald Harrison and Olu Dara.
  17. Ray Bryant, Lonesome Traveler (Cadet)

  25. The Les Spann is a very nice album and not too well known. I first came across Spann on "Side by Side"which was the first Ellington album I ever heard. I still have a soft spot for it. I don't find Spannn especially individual but Gemini is fine session which was recorded pretty well , even if my Jazzland pressing isn't too hot. I like it also; It is nicely recorded and this copy appears little played; I was lucky to find it at Academy Records in New York a couple of months ago--and a bargain at $12.
