  1. Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, Ife Onye Metalu (Polygram Nigeria)
  2. Henry Threadgill has the second reed chair on those sides, though he was also in a David Murray Big Band around that time. Malfunction on this end, sorry. Hemphill was on alto the only time I saw the Octet, which was in September of 1984.
  3. Coleman Hawkins, Desafinado (Sparton Impulse)
  4. What about the David Murray Octet? He's on Ming, Home, and Murray's Steps, as I recall.
  5. junior Mance Trio, Big Chief (Jazzland promo)
  6. Another terrific Ari Hoenig group/set.
  7. Freddie Roach, All That's Good (Blue Note NY USA), and Cannonball Adderley Quintet at the LIghthouse (Riverside)
  8. This recording is out on CD now. It is indeed very good.
  9. La Guitarra Y El Sonido Increible De Gilberto Puente (RCA Mexico, orange label deep groove). The incredible guitar sound of Gilberto Puente is not hyperbole on this excellent Mexican jazz trio recording, circa 1969. Yusef Lateef, The Centaur and the Phoenix (Riverside mono).
  10. Damn! Dieuf Dieul is a brilliant band! Must get this, but MG Wow, what a haul!
  11. Another recent release that is fantastic, Dieuf Dieul de Thies, from Teranga Beat. http://www.terangabeat.com/index.php?/releases/dieuf-dieul-de-thies---aw-sa-yone-vol1/
  12. Avishal Cohen and Joe Martin it was for sure; I'm drawing a blank on whether Marcus Gilmore was actually the drummer Friday night. Mike DiRubbo's rhythm section was real nice--Brian Charette on piano, Dwayne Burno on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums.
  13. I really wanted to get down to catch Turner, but was worn out from two road trips into the city the week before. How was it? I honestly did not care much for the music. I've enjoyed Mark Turner as a sideman, and certainly they were all good musicians (though the drummer in particular was not to my taste, too busy and noisy), and there were elements of solos I enjoyed, but overall, I didn't care for the compositions or the overall sound of the group. They offered to let us stay another set for just a one drink minimum, and I had no interest in taking up the offer. My next stop, MIke Dirubbo's group was much better, to my taste.
  14. I have those three also; all are fantastic.
  15. that was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Indeed it was. Last Saturday night, Greg Osby's group played at Shapeshifter Lab (after a week at the Village Vanguard the preceding week), and I was fortunate to be there. Simona Premazzi was on piano. It was a fabulous set.
  16. Last Friday night, Mark Turner at the Village Vanguard, followed by the Mike DiRubbo Quintet at Smalls. Last Saturday, at Shapeshifter Lab, first Russell Kirk, then Greg Osby 4 with Simona Premazzi on piano. Then to Smalls for another set by Mike Dirubbo, followed by the Stacy Dillard Brooklyn Circle. Sunday afternoon, the Joe Alterman Trio, with James Cammack on bass, and guest Houston Person, at the Blue Note.
  17. Greg Osby sitting is currently sitting in with the Simona Premazzi Quartet.
  18. Not true; there's the Jazz Record Center.
  19. Tonight, enjoying the Sam Yahel Trio.
  20. This Art Blakey discography shows several releases with Essiet Essiet on bass. http://www.jazzdisco.org/art-blakey/discography/?bcsi_scan_4f965425cd6c17c8=0
  21. Joe Henderson, Inner Urge (Blue Note blue label, Van Gelder), and Bob Thiele and His New Happy Times Orchestra with Gabor Szabo, LIght My Fire (Impulse, white and black promo label). This had the appearance of a comical period piece turkey (confirmed on the second track of side 1 as an uncredited chorus of female vocalists sings, "Let's All Get Stoned" during a version of Dylan's Rainy Day Woman). But on the last song of the first side, Light My Fire of all things, Gabor Szabo unleashes a furious solo, followed by some rather fine Tom Scott, and this high level of solo play by Szabo and Scott more or less continues for the rest of the album.
  22. Still no reply from Mr. Jackson and/or his minions.
  23. Final bid was $202.50!
  24. Miles Davis, Steamin' (Prestige, New Jersey)--A battered but still beautiful sounding copy.
  25. Those Bob Mosely sides are available on CD on an IAJRC release, Lucky Thompson, The Beginning Years.
