  1. They need to build one with a larger storage capacity, and I would buy another in a heartbeat. I've given up hope that they will, however.
  2. I missed that, but Ari Hoenig's first set Monday night sure was nice.
  3. Were, please? And...does anybody know how long this San Antonino thing has been going on? Or are those three events being promoted separately of each other? The DFW area's inability to get something going to give the groups that play Houston and/or Austin (and now, possibly, San Antonio) an area venue (which would no doubt increase booking opportunities for all...many people are more willing to make two or three gigs in an area for a little less per gig guarantee in return for a little larger gross for the overall trip) is very discouraging....but not surprising, not really. I'm not sure. I went to a meeting in San Antonio a few months back and reset an iPhone app called Bandsintown to my geographic location of San Antonio and was quite surprised to find such a list (Lonnie Smith, Jason Moran, Lionel Loueke, San Francisco Jazz Collective). The events at the Jo Long Theater appear to be part of a series. The Charles Lloyd concert is separate, I just found out about it from Charles Lloyd's twitter. Lonnie Smith is playing at the Walton Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas the next day after his San Antonio concert.
  4. Tickets to the Billy Harper/The Cookers concert in Denton can now be purchased online.
  5. The Nameless Sound website still says "venue to be determined."

  7. Another concert in San Antonio: Charles Lloyd & Gerald Clayton Jazz Expressions Laurie Auditorium - Trinity University February 22 - 7:30 p.m.
  8. February 18: John Raymond and Tim Green at Scat Jazz.
  9. I came across new copies of this set today in a Half Price Books store for $40. It's probably not the only store to have them, if anyone is in the market and has HPBs in their area.
  10. I watched an internet broadcast of one of her concerts from Joe's Pub; I thought she was good.
  11. Mosaic is having a sale on the LP sets through the end of February--$10 off.
  12. I think it's deliberately useless--they must think that if the results are overinclusive you will sample some of the supposedly simillar artists and buy their CDs as well. I find it results in my not necessarily finding what I'm actually looking for.
  13. Yes, the set includes "My Favorite Quintet," plus additional unreleased material from the same concert--a 40 minute LP expanded to 90 minutes.
  14. Here is the CD: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/carllotttrio
  15. Yesterday, Charles Earland, Front Burner (Milestone), Living Chicago Blues Volume 2 (Alligator), and Vieux Farka Toure, Mon Pays (Six Degrees).
  16. April 16: Eric Johnson and Mike Stern--Granada Theater.
  17. March 19: Kalmon Balogh and the Gypsy Cimbalom Band--Poor David's Pub.
  18. I saw him a few times--once in a small theater in New York in a group with Zane Massey similar to his two hard boppish Delmark releases, another time at the Knitting Factory, with a quartet he called Shades of Trane, which played all Coltrane compositions, and in a quartet with Lee Rozie, William Parker and Hamid Drake--these were all very enjoyable performances; I'm sorry to hear this news.
  19. It seems like their sets are disappearing at alot faster rate than they are being created.
  20. Thanks. I got tickets for both. I ordered tickets to the Wayne Shorter concert--by hook or by crook I will make it to Houston that Friday.
  21. Her second leader date is really good; you will enjoy it. Here are two more fine recordings where she is a sideman: Ian Underwood, Help I Lost My Body, and Simona Premazzi, The Lucid Dreamer (Inner Circle). She's only on a few tracks on The Lucid Dreamer (which also features Greg Osby). The Ian Underwood recording (a bass player, not the ex-Mothers sideman) is really excellent and was one of my most frequently listened to recordings acquired during 2013. The tenor sax playing on this one is sublime. Its available from cdbaby.com
  22. I'd recommend starting with the 1956-57 material on Atlantic, RCA and Bethleham--Pithecanthropus Erectus, The Clown, Tonight at Noon, East Coasting, A Modern Jazz Symposium of Poetry and Music, and Tijuana Moods.
  23. I've never seen that issue, but the box says leader sessions, so it is presumably the portion of the Mingus Debut set where Mingus was the leader of the session. The big debut box also includes sideman Mingus sessions on Debut.
