  1. Hey, you big bully, what's the idea of hitting that little bully?
  2. Last night featured a pair of piano trios--I caught a set by the Uri Caine Trio, followed by a really dynamic set by the Jean Michel Pilc trio, featuring Richard Bona on bass guitar. Tonight's early set is the Spike Wilner quartet, with Melissa Aldana on tenor sax.
  3. It's actually not quite the complete concert, as it does not include the opening performance of Wayne Shorter's Deluge, or the drum solo encore.
  4. Ronald Shannon Jackson's final concert, at the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff, in is now available for download on iTunes.
  5. I ordered a copy from importcds through amazon; I can't wait to hear it.

  7. I've never heard Gil's orchestral music live, but I can relate in the sense that the two times I heard his Monday Night Orchestra at Sweet Basil (and I don't even like that band anywhere near as much as the orchestral works) and Gil wasn't even alive any more (and George Adams was not present), that was still a powerful experience--it still felt like he was there.
  8. I'm sorry I missed the concert. There are no future events currently shown on the Ryan Truesdell/Gil Evans Project webpage. http://www.ryantruesdell.com/gilevansproject/
  9. I will probably become a member this year. You also get let into the concert hall first as a member. (The concerts I've attended are no where near being sold out though.)
  10. If he fliers in the local restaurants are any indication, Indian Classical Music is presented not-irregularly in the northern suburbs. I haven't attended any of the events, generally because of the stupid reason that I see a poster in a restaurant window and then forget about it after eating. So, thanks for posting this here, instead of in a restaurant window. Apparently the Indian Classical Music Circle of DFW has been presenting Indian classical music concerts in the area for many years, mostly at the Allen Public Library auditorium. They alternate instrumental and vocal concerts. I attended three instrumental concerts last year, and two of them were amazing (Nayan Ghosh (on sitar) and Mohan Bhatt (on a modified steel guitar)), and the third was at a lower plane but still good (the double violin player was very good). I think there is also a subculture of Indian popular music concerts happening from time to time in the area. http://www.icmcdfw.org

  12. Last night, Charles Lloyd and Gerald Clayton duo at Laurie Auditorium, Trinity University, San Antonio. A really beautiful concert.
  13. In jazz, I've seen McCoy Tyner and David Newman twelve times each. Ornette Coleman, nine times. Ronald Shannon Jackson eight times; Freddie Hubbard and Mike Stern, seven times each. In blues, Buddy Guy, at least twenty-seven times. Lucky Peterson, twenty-two times.
  14. February 22: Shelly Carroll Big Band at Sandaga Jazz.
  15. I haven't heard her leader LP, but she's excellent on a couple of Terry Gibbs small group LPs on Emarcy.
  16. It does to me. They had a reunion CD out in the last few years and it was quite good.
  17. Anyone besides me planning on going to see Charles Lloyd tomorrow?
  18. Tonight, I heard part of a set by the Harold Mabern trio, followed by the Tyler Mitchell Quartet featuring Michael Ray on trumpet.
  19. Same group that will be in Austin on Sunday, correct? For that matter, where is the Austin gig? Is it still on? Yes, it's the same group, but I don't know any details about the Austin gig. So I guess they're playing Austin, coming up to Dallas, and then coming all the way back down to Houston in 3 days! I found this reference on the internet: March 23: Bobby Bradford, Historic Victory Grill
  20. Yes, I know what you mean. Today a 20 CD set (Complete Vogue Recordings) arrived (hey,it was only $28), plus a Paul Gonsalves Impulse LP from an ebay purchase.
  21. Bobby Bradford without having to travel a couple hundred miles, that's great news.
  22. I haven't heard the Ryan Truesdell album, but you've convinced me I might want to. I did hear the Gil Evans group twice at Sweet Basil, though post-humously a couple of years after his death and under the direction of Miles Evans--both times were very pleasing musical experiences--one of those times when the music starts and immediately you know you've found the right place to be.
  23. Tuesday at 5 in Denton probably rules it out for me, assuming I could overcome my fears. Fears of...bad music??? And what is UNT trying to do with a 5:00 start on a Tuesday - limit their audience as much as possible? Yes, I dislike the style of the UNT lab bands (please pardon me any alumni). I'm still bitter my only opportunity to see Gerry Mulligan was with the One O'Clock Lab Band. So if it were Gil Evans charts by the Maria Schneider orchestra, by the Vanguard's Monday night orchestra, by the Mingus Big Band, sure I'm up for it, but the One O'Clock lab band, probably not.
