  1. The notion of being kept by Marian McPartland makes me feel funny inside, and not necessarily in a good way... BTW - who is/was Sherman Fairchild? http://www.hankonealphoto.com/blog/2010/06/05/83-sherman-m-fairchild.html
  2. In 2010 at Jazz Standard I saw Spencer/Sparks/Alvin Queen, which was a pretty nice rhythm section.
  3. I should probably know -- but were Byard, Davis and Dawson (all three) on any other (non-Ervin) dates together? They are on the Jaki Byard Experience LP along with Roland Kirk Another one is Eric Kloss, In the Land of the Giants.
  4. Johnny Hammond Smith--What's Goin' On (Prestige/Fantasy)
  5. Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Johnny Griffin, Live at Minton's, The First Set (Prestige, yellow and black NJ)
  6. Once I saw that group as a quartet (Tyner, Bartz, Lee, Fletcher) without John Blake at a short-lived jazz club in Oak Cliff called the Judge's Chambers--they played a version of Contemplation that was sublime. Was he in ill health at the time? He certainly didn't suck any of the times I saw him. The last time was around 1998 at the Village Vanguard--sitting in the front row, with his vibes and marimba directly in front of me, that was amazing. The first time was at Lush Life in the early 1980s--the club was almost empty and I got to talk with him awhile; he was very friendly. Also at the Caravan of Dreams circa mid-1980s, and then as well with the Timeless All Stars at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. All were good.
  7. Shirley Scott---Queen of the Organ (Impulse stereo, red and black) Riverside Dixieland Sampler
  8. Happy birthday!
  9. I saw the McCoy Tyner group with John Blake on violin, Gary Bartz on alto, John Lee or (on one occasion) Gerald Veasley on bass guitar, and Wilby Fletcher on drums on a number of occasions. McCoy was coming through Dallas/Fort Worth a couple of times a year during the early to late 1980s, playing at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth and the Venetian Room of the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. The quintet was quite electrifying; in fact I recall the appearance with Veasley on bass at the Caravan as a highlight of my concert going experiences. The group only recorded one LP, Dimensions. It is good but does not quite match what I heard live.
  10. Lucky Peterson Band at Tuckers. A two keyboard band tonight (plus the usual bassist and drummer), with some tasty guitar in the first set.
  11. Coleman Hawkins, Wrapped Tight (Impulse orange and black) Wynton Kelly--Undiluted (Verve)

    Bola Sete

There's a new CD reissue of a Bola Sete album, Crystal Gardens. It' a superb solo effort, recorded in his home studio from 1970-72. There are three bonus tracks as well. Available from cdbaby.com.
  13. If I have not confused my live Magic Sam recordings, I believe this is the one that has the best fidelity.
  14. Mamadou Diabate--Heritage Bola Sete--Crystal Garden Barbara Dennerlein--In a Silent Mood
  15. Phil Woods--Greek Cooking (Impulse, red and black) Charles Mingus--Mingus Revisited (Limelight, mono)
  16. I have a respectable number of Black Saint/Soul Note LPs and CDs, purchased over the last 30 years or so. The catalog is rather large though, and they have never been that easy or inexpensive to obtain. These discount priced box sets are very welcome.
  17. I have become seriously addicted to this series--so far I've listened to the sets of Charlie Haden, David Murray, Lester Bowie, and Henry Threadgill, with Enrico Rava and George Russell in the queue. Next orders will probably be Steve Lacy and Lee Konitz.

    Junior Cook

The Freddie Hubbard-Junior Cook quintet is in strong form on the new Jazz Icons DVD. It's really good.
  19. Mingus Dynasty (Columbia six eyes mono)
  20. I just watched/listened to the new Coltrane Jazz Icon DVD. Great!
  21. Charles Mingus--Mingus Ah Uh (Columbia, six eyes stereo, black and white promo)
  22. I came across this short Lobi Traore promotional film--he's interviewed in what appears to be his home in Mali, and there are brief performance excerpts on electric and acoustic guitar.
  23. Charles Mingus--Blues and Roots (Atlantic)
  24. Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane.
  25. Charles Mingus--A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry (Bethleham). 1957 Mingus is just incredible--the base group of Mingus, Richmond, Jimmy Knepper, and Shafi Hadi is one of my favorites. Charles Mingus--Wonderland (United Artists, disembodied Mingus head pressing). I noticed that there is a an ear or P in the inner groove, just like a Blue Note pressing.
